Thanks to everyone for comments yesterday, seems we are in agreement - Lists are vital but remembering to actually look at them/take them with you is even more important!!
After my cinema visit on Monday I looked to see what films were being released in June, July and August to see if there would be anything else to go and see. But goodness me there are some weird things that don't appeal at all. Maybe the Thursday Murder Club might be OK but turns out it's probably only on Netflix. The Regal on Monday trailed 'The Roses' - full of famous actors but not something I would bother with and the Final Downton Abbey - costume drama never appeals to me at all. I started looking at the 9000+ on the imdb website that are due out this year but gave up after a few 100!
So it might be a while before another Film Review appears on here as I can't be bothered to go just for the sake of going out - with 'Happy at Home' being the subtitle of the blog!
I got home in time after the cinema to see both Cam Norrie and Jack Draper getting knocked out of the French Open - the end of Brits in singles. Ho Hum - t'was good while it lasted and there remained the British guys in the Doubles and Alfie Hewitt and Gordon Reid in the wheelchair matches - they've already won so many titles over the last few years but hardly get a mention.
I got my 12 sweetcorn plants out into a vegetable bed this week along with 10 more plants I got for £2 at the car boot sale, that were way ahead of mine. I'm still fencing round plants that I'm putting in to keep the pigeons from walking into them but the difference to everything without a cat constantly digging stuff up is incredible. My rhubarb is actually growing and I no longer need to cover and peg everything down. I'm sad that the children lost their pet but it's wonderful for gardening - sorry to write that buts it's true.
The day after planting there was some good steady rain which is useful although it turned really chilly.
There's plenty of black and greenfly around this year and 3 out of 4 Buddleias are really suffering. I cut the two down the side right back but new growth is completely covered in black sticky mess again. Not a good outlook for flowers for the butterflies this summer.
This is my old school scarf, it's been kept for the 54 years since I left school which is probably ridiculous. I had a clear out of a few things from the built in wardrobe/shelving. It's going at last, along with a bagful of other bits. I can't think of any reason to keep it, especially as I've got some much nicer and softer scarves for winter.
Anyone else noticed tins of sardines are missing everywhere? I was eating a tin every week either in a warm pasta salad or on toast they were only around 50p a tin. Apparently most come from Morocco and they have problems. What's the betting that when they re-appear they will be much more expensive.
I did have one other trip out during the week for free cake with photos but I'll make that a post for next week.
Have a good weekend, weather forecast here is a bit iffy - shame, as it's the village summer fair.
Back Monday
We're great sardine eaters too (with spaghetti or on toast) and I'd noticed they seemed to be out of stock.
ReplyDeleteI've sprayed my blackfly with oily soapy water as they were demolishing my cardoons.
The Buddleia are looking really sad this year - never known them to be affected so much
DeleteI noticed the sardine shortage too. a nearby village school had a huge fete planned for today , their 150th anniversary,. Last night they announced it was cancelled due to forecast thunderstorms. Im off to an indoor craft fair shortly
ReplyDeleteSo sad when things have to be cancelled when so much work goes into organising
DeleteThe last couple of times I have been to the supermarket I have noticed quite a few spaces on the shelves. The unsweetened Decaff cappuccino that I drink has disappeared completely from all our local supermarkets -apparently it’s being rebranded so guess that will be an increase in price! Catriona
ReplyDeleteCatriona (and all) The Nescafe coffee sachets seem to have been withdrawn from shops - I use the unsweetened and the cappuccino ones - but I've noticed that the amount of coffee in them has gradually reduced. I now need to add a teaspoon of coffee to every mug! Yes, I reckon the new price will be much higher - I hope there will be more coffee in the sachets.
DeleteLove my coffee machine - always lots of choice for ground coffee
DeleteOur broad beans plants are suffering from blackfly, I know it doesn't usually affect the beans in the pod but they're yucky to prep! We're glad of the rain for the last couple of days.
ReplyDeletePenny
I don't grow them now but did at the smallholding and I remember nipping out the tops as soon as I spotted any blackfly moving in
DeleteGray nipped out the tips of the broad beans but still the blackfly came this year :(
DeleteMy husband really likes silds and we have had great difficulty in finding any for the last year or so. If we go anywhere different we usually take a look in the local supermarket and stock up if they have them. They are just for him though, I can't stand the smell of them and won't even wash the tin up for recycling.
ReplyDeleteSild was a thing here, but don't remember seeing any recently. We get sardines, pilchard and mackerel in cans
DeleteIn Madeira last year we visited a sardine gift shop.
ReplyDeleteThe little tins were beautifully arranged and selling for €33 each!
A sardine gift shop ! Can't be many of them around!
DeleteThere was once a Colmans Mustard gift shop in Norwich - think it's gone now.
It seems inevitable that when things are restocked they will be more expensive. It's tough for families on a low budget.
ReplyDeleteEven buying for one is creeping up, would be hard pressed to buy much for £10 now
DeleteI love sardines (as well as tuna and pilchards!) I think that M&S have some tins and Ocado, if you have home delivery.
ReplyDeleteI kept my old college scarf for many years until the moths got it!
We have plenty of greenfly (and mosquitoes!) here but little in the way of black fly. Our biggest problem will no doubt be blackspot on the roses, which is always bad in this area.
Enjoy your weekend! 😁
It's the range of cheap small tins that have gone - I bought small tin of mackerel in sunflower oil - 30p more than what the sardines were
DeleteYes, I'm really missing the good value tins of sardines, I noticed there were some Cornish ones in Tesco today, in fancy sauces and twice the price.
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
Would be lovely if local/English meant cheaper but it never does.
DeleteI still have access to sardines in various sauces or plain. I wonder if mine come from a different source. Or through a different supply chain.
ReplyDeleteProbably, it seems ours come mainly from Morocco - I guess yours would be more local to you
DeleteHaven't had sardines since I was a kid and have never bought them so can't help you out on that.
ReplyDeleteI've been sprinkling cayenne pepper on my dahlias to keep the bunnies from nibbling on them. So far it might be working...
Rabbits is one problem I don't have in the garden - they are all over the road in the graveyard!
DeleteI hadn't heard that about sardines. Is it a Brexit thing? Our buddleias also look terrible from all the green/blackfly. We were told that the plants will still bloom, despite the stunted leaves, so we've left them alone even though they're unsightly.
ReplyDeleteI hope it's right about Buddeias still flowering.
DeleteYes, our growing things here in northernmost Indiana desperately need some *warmth*. Sheesh! They're not doing nearly as well as they could be. But starting today the weatherperson says it's supposed to warm up & stay warmed up for a good many days. That should help. Awww....I think you should keep your scarf. And wear it too. :-) In my hope chest (I received from my parents on my 16th birthday) I have an old hat that looks just like the one Ali McGraw wore in the movie "Love Story". I should get that one out too & wear it in winter. Enjoy your weekend. ~Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteWe hard warmth early now June has turned to chilly and wet - Love English weather!
DeleteThe scarf has gone all sort of hard - and not nice to wear. It's gone!
Alan mentioned that he couldn't get any sardines last week, and I've noticed lots of gaps in the supermarkets this past couple of weeks. Maybe some of the preppers have got the right idea about stocking up on favourite things.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I will stock up on some things after all - just in case!
DeleteI've noticed the tuna in cans is in short supply too. It is priced at $2 a can and that could double.
ReplyDeleteI would not donate the school scarf. It really is good looking and carries many memories. I have donated things like your scarf and later regretted it.
It is good to hear your garden veggies are doing well and not being disturbed by any cat.
I'm not sure how much I wore that scarf at school - don't think I will regret giving it away - can't think why I would ever use it again
DeleteI don't eat sardines, so cannot vouch for what is going on with them here. We're trying to use up the freezer contents before we move, so I can't say that I've noticed what is going on at the supermarkets. I do have a question though. I've used google search to try to ID those flowers on your header. I come up with ceanthus (please over look if misspelled). Does it have a common name?
ReplyDeleteIt's called Ceanothus here or California Lilac in your part of the world. The blue has all gone from the garden now - I need a new header!
DeleteDo they have a scent like regular lilacs? Lilac is my very favorite scent in all the world.
DeleteNo scent on a Ceanothus, although I find lilac - I've got a white one - too strong
DeleteWell done on the decluttering! Glad you managed to get some gardening done. It doesn't look like I'll end up doing any again this year. I always seem to be behind on everything!
ReplyDeleteGardening will be more pleasurable without having to remove the cat poo!
DeleteI have seen that sardines are now a thing. They are a trend. Millennials love them and are buying them like crazy. Whoda thunk?
ReplyDeleteI wonder if it's skipped a generation as I can't imagine my lot, born in the 80's, buying and eating them
DeleteOur big thing missing of late has been tomatoes - apparently floods have made supply an issue - which I would believe, were our area not a large supplier of tomatoes...
ReplyDeleteWe don't really enjoy sardines so I haven't noticed a shortage in the shops. Small tins of baked beans are hard to find now though. A large tin is too big even for 2 of us.
