October 21st - St Ursula's Day

 Here's a Saint I've never heard of until I read this in the Kate Greenaway Book of Days.

In the Book of Saints there is this very strange story about Ursula

And this is the accompanying picture

I only know of one person named Ursula . The daughter of a lady who I worked with in the library. Ursula later went on to manage the same library for many years until she retired recently. Definitely not a name as common as Susan!

Photos From The Week

 My new header photo is the vine that's on a bit of trellis hiding the shed. I didn't notice the spider until the photo was on the computer. The colours now are gorgeous but the rest of the year it's dull green and I have to keep cutting the darn thing back as it grows like crazy.

Nearly the last of the roses? brought these in last Sunday while it was fine before we had a wet Monday morning.

Wiped all the dirt from the butternut squash and piled them up in a basket on the kitchen window sill.

Mixed up a batch of pizza topping  for freezing in portions- onions, two tins of tomatoes without the juice, tomato puree and dried oregano.

Loaf of bread - 50/50 wholemeal and white.

Cheese scones for my garden helper

Brought in the last decent sized apples from my Falstaff tree. They are just SO good!

The October Library Book Photo

 10 books collected yesterday. They are all books I'd reserved . There might have been 15 as there are 5 others already in transit that will be waiting for me in November.

Five crime including a new-to me-author  ........Jeanne M Dams - perhaps someone in blogland had mentioned it. 'Whale Fall' is a debut novel set in 1938 on a remote Welsh island. There are 4 non fiction including a cookery book and a garden book for some reason which might be worth looking at or might just be flicked through. I read the book about Derek Jarman's garden on the stony wastes of Dungeness and I think someone mentioned the book about his home was also interesting so I reserved it. I have a feeling that I've borrowed' The Wheel of The Year' before.

Last month I brought home the books below. I've still got A Mudlarking Year and the Donna Leon here.  

Couldn't get into 'Before The Fact' and I didn't find anything interesting in the cookery or gardening book.

And as I mentioned last Saturday - only the Agatha Christie from the Autumn titled books was read.

That means I only read 4 out of 12.  My take on those I read are on the separate Books Read 2024 page.
