October Trees and Flint

At this time of the year as the colours change you can see all the different trees across the field.

The industrial fencing is around land that will eventually be new housing, a sign says 'Launching Autumn 2026' but there is no sign of work starting yet. Locally there are two sites of new housing where the builders have gone bankrupt and houses remain unsold and unfinished and one new site at the other end of the village where builders have just started.

The Ash tree below has lost it's leaves already, I wouldn't be surprised  if it is on it's way out with Ash Tree dieback disease.

Further up the lane this Ash still hangs on to all it's leaves, against a very grey sky.

We don't have granite, sandstone, limestone or any other rock in Suffolk but plenty of flint and this huge piece, over a foot across, must have been ploughed out of the field recently as it was laying on a field edge and I've not seen it there before. It would be a lovely piece to keep - except it's too heavy to move!

  1. I occasionally find fist-size lumps of flint when I'm digging the garden. I have a long line of them at the bottom of the wall now. I think our East Anglia flint is beautiful!

  2. The Ash ttrees are usually the first to lose their leaves. Mind you yesterday's winds up in the Elan Valley was encouraging leaf drop all over. In the garden my Buddleia has decided that is it for the year, yellowing leaves and leaf-drop.

  4. Lots of ash trees have been removed in our area in the last couple of years and some new trees have been planted in their place. There are lots and lots of leaves from the school trees in our garden and the high wind today is blowing them everywhere! Catriona

  5. Wonderful flint - I am always finding appealing rocks while out on a walk - sometimes they are indeed just too big!

  6. I hate a rock that captures my eye but has to be left where it lays!

  7. Many of our trees are still pretty green but we do have some lovely red and yellow leaves on trees to see when I look out my window.

  8. Our leaves are starting to fall too. The color behind my house is orange, red and yellow. The Maple trees are putting on a show.
The flint is fantastic. I love rocks like that too.
You have lots of new builds going on. Fortunately, you'll not be there for the construction. You must be excited about your move!

  10. We are losing ash trees here too to the emerald ash borer. As we drive west through upstate NY there are whole swaths of dead trees - ash that have succumbed.

  11. It's definitely seeming more like Autumn outside. The trees are really starting to change here. I don't like it when the leaves start to fall, everything seems so bare.
