 Random Stuff..................

  • Heating oil is really being saved with the warm weather most of the week. So far this autumn the heating has only switched itself on on a few mornings but off again less than an hour later. We had rain on two days this week, more than there has been for months.
  • BiL got here to cut the yew hedge out the front - it took less than an hour to cut and clear up, it would have taken me days with my small hedge cutter. He stopped for a coffee and a chat which is good - he has a very busy schedule for a retired person!!
  • Thank you for all the comments about charity shop clothes last Tuesday. It was interesting but I'm still puzzling about the comment from anon who actually came back to explain his/her comment but I still didn't understand their assumption that buying secondhand means I'm denying myself the pleasure of buying new or I'm somehow implying it is wrong to buy anything other than second-hand.............. They don't know me at all!
  • Remembered to go and find a diary (NEW!) from The Works when I was in town. I'm ready for the new year.

  • I've actually watched England playing football on TV in the Nations League - they do seem to be playing well at the moment. I really prefer watching rugby but when Harry Kane etc are scoring so many goals it's easier to watch...........guess that makes me a 'fair weather' football watcher.
  • Finished reading Phillipa Perry's first crime fiction book 'Shrink Solves Murder'. It was a good story. It's always interesting to see a well known person writing fiction, sometimes they are successful and this definitely falls into that category as she is writing about what she knows. I'm sure there will be another book to follow.
  • It's EGD's 10th birthday this weekend so off to see her and meanwhile down in Surrey YGS is settling in at school while Daughter sorts out a High School application ready for EGS . Many schools there are HUGE, she said that their nearest has a ten class intake each year! So funny to think back to my schooldays with just 6 children the same age at my primary school and a 90 pupil intake at Grammar School. A whole different world.
  • Hope mentioning a house move wasn't a mistake, maybe tempting fate? The housing market is very odd and I wouldn't be surprised to get a phone call to say someone had pulled out. I'm primed for disappointment but hoping for success. Please forget I mentioned it!
  • Imagine watching a live streaming of execution by a firing squad in 2026 - no thanks.
Have a good weekend ..........I hope to be back Monday.

  1. Hi Sue, enjoyed reading about your week. Personally I think it’s great that you go to the charity shop. They are called thrift stores here and if I could get out to them I would be going all the time. When you think of it this way, it is another way to recycle which the world badly needs. You write interesting posts. Thank you for sharing what’s going on in your life. Happy weekend to you.

    1. Thank you, it's always interesting to find useful things that someone has got rid of .

  2. I'm interested in your review of the Philippa Perry book, It's on my 'want to read' list.
Live streaming an execution is reaching a new depth for any regime. Unbelievable in a modern country in today's world. As you say, no thanks.

    1. The Philippa Perry book is definitely worth reading - it's on the cosy side of crime fiction rather than the very serious, but not too cosy to be silly.

  3. We are also very happy the prolonged good weather means the heating has only come on twice. We have oil fired heating too but also a wood stove which we use in the winter to save oil.
I agree about the execution, how revolting.
    Fingers crossed for the move.

  4. The plan to live-stream the execution of one of its own citizens shows just how low the American administration has sunk. It's disgusting.

  6. It's officially forgotten that you're moving - won't mention it until you tell us you are there. We will be keeping our fingers crossed for you though.
I went back and read Anon's follow up. I'm baffled. At no time have you ever suggested that people should only buy second-hand or even hinted that should be the case.
The USA seems to be heading to Medieval times - utterly barbaric to suggest live-streaming an execution. Today, Trumps deal with Putin shows just how desperate he's become. Shameful. So much for ending the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of becoming president, he's now facilitating it.
Thanks for the book recommendation. I shall keep a look out on the library for that one.

    1. I thought I was being stupid by not really understanding what anon was rattling on about. Very strange!

Some people will be so pleased they have cheaper diesel - for them Ukraine is too far away to bother about. It's all so sad.

  7. Your life is busy and entertaining to your readers.
I don't understand why some people feel entitled to comment on the personal choices of others, but that's the way of the world now, I suppose.

It’s definitely cooler in the mornings and evenings now, I’ll soon be putting a vest on and sucking a mint 😅

  9. You won't miss that yew hedge, that much is certain! I hope you haven't jinxed your sale, but it does seem to have fallen into place in a positive way.

Let new clothes be bought by those who can afford them. Not all of us can - or at any rate, are happy to buy worn a few times clothes for a fraction of the new price.

A few cooler nights and a brisk breeze yesterday has begun to shift the leaves now . . .

    1. The hedge cuts out some noise and wind from down the road so probably a good thing - but it's very solid and ugly

  10. There is an unofficial rule in New England that you have to tough it out without turning on the heat until November 1. There was one night this week when the weather forecast advised to bring in plants because there was going to be a frost. I was already in my pajamas and too tired to go outside. Happily, my pretty Rio Red Dipladenia are very hardy and should last another few weeks!

  11. I'm a " Secondhand Rose " and very happy with my wardrobe . I'm busy sorting out my warm winter things right now ....it's starting to feel a bit chilly at night . Now where did I put my favourite fingerless gloves ? !!! 💐☺️💞

  12. I love thrifting! It is so much better than it all going to a laandfill! I doubt they will televise an execution, lol. It is all hype and to keep the little 'ants' fighting among theriselves while they pull more sneaky stuff....unfortunatley, this country has become nothing but a game to them.

    1. I sure hope that you are right. It's a fresh, new horror everyday. Completely mind boggling. The brother of one of the victims is pleading for it not to be televised. This government is revolting.

  14. My fingers are crossed for your move but I promise not to mention it further! (After this!)

I didn't see anon's comment but I'll go back and read it. I once had someone accuse me of taking clothes away from poor people when I bought from charity shops. I tried to point out that it's the MONEY generated by the shops that benefits people! The clothes are there to be sold, after all! People are funny.

  15. 1. You will miss BIL's visit when you move. Unless he's moving too? 2. I buy both new and used of all things. I look at the thrift store first, but sometimes you need it pretty quickly and can't wait for it to maybe show up. 3. I will not be watching that horror show. Sometimes I'm embarrassed of our country! 4. It's been in the 80sF this week but next week down to the 60sF. Seventeen years ago we had inches of snow on this date. We don't want that anytime soon, as we just started harvesting this week and have at least 3 more weeks to go. It was a very late start due to slow drying crops and then over 5" of rain in one evening.
