I've whizzed through two of the library books from my May haul. They were both short books - especially the one by Mel Starr- and quickly read.
It is 1939 and four young people sit on a train waiting to be evacuated from London when war is threatened. Three have been persuaded to go by anxious parents and the fourth is getting away from a violent and drunken father.
After a short discussion they decide they are too old to be sent out of the city and get off the train, heading towards home in Greenwich. What follows is two years of friendship and growing up with much time spent under the London blitz. Definitely a book for teenagers with more descriptions of the horrors of the London Blitz than a book for younger children would have. More details HERE
Mel Starr - A Polluted Font. This is the sixteenth Chronicle of Hugh De Singleton, Surgeon, sleuth and Bailiff to Lord Gilbert and set in medieval Bampton, a village in Oxfordshire.
When Hugh and Kate's newborn is taken to the church to be baptized everyone is astounded to find the font empty- the font isn't leaking but the mystery turns nasty when Father Robert is found lying in the church in a pool of blood. Hugh has to travel to Oxford several times before the mystery is solved. The story is set against the background of the introduction of a poll tax for every person over the age of 14. All were expected to pay a groat or 4 pence, many couldn't afford it, which led to unscrupulous men taking advantage where ever they could.

Two interesting books. The second one reminds me of the Brother Cadfael Chronicles, though set four hundred years earlier!
ReplyDeleteThey sound like a couple of interesting books, maybe the first one would be more up my street. Sometimes it's nice to whizz through a quick read or two isn't it, it can settle you ready for a longer or more serious read afterwards.
ReplyDeleteI've been enjoying the books by Robert Thorogood - his Marlow Murder club mysteries. I had seen the first one on TV but enjoyed reading it anyway and am now on to the next in the series. I like these lady sleuths!
ReplyDeleteTwo quick good reads prepare you for the next read. You seem well stocked for May.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading Kate Webb at the moment and am waiting for the latest Elly Griffiths book. I seem to remember you (or someone) didn't like it but I thought I would give it a try!
ReplyDeleteI didn't get into it but might try again another time - it's about a time travelling detective
DeleteI really like the sound of Under a Fire-red Sky. I seem to be in the mood for home-front WW2 books at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI'm always into WWII home-front books!
