Debenham Church Art Exhibition

Last week I went to have a look at  this art exhibition in Debenham church - it's one I try and get to every year and this year it was huge with over 500 pieces to look at as well as lots of unframed art and greetings cards.

It was very busy too, lots of people looking and the sun shining,  didn't make for good photos so I didn't take many.

Lino Cuts by Judy Holloway -£155 each

Realistic still life oil paintings. Strawberries, satsuma and marbles by Cate Swinfen £395 each!

Lino cuts in muted colours . The middle one is titled Softly Suffolk. By Anne Townshend £185 each

Giclee Print of original mixed media work.  Covehithe Coastline by Alfie Carpenter. ( A local artist and musician who died from cancer age just 33 in 2023)

Display of small art work in various mediums

Mixed media - looks like glass but is a pourable plastic? whose name I can't remember by Mark Wheeley. Really bad reflections makes a poor photo.

HUGE painting of a gull on blue sky. Apologies - I can't find the artist in the catalogue but I'm sure it said it was £900! on a label at the side of the other similar painting. Not something I would choose to own.

Beach huts by Shirley Harvey and Red Sails by Kay Lucas

As usual I just bought a couple of cards. There was one unframed painting I liked  - it was £90 and large and would have cost much more to be framed. There is usually something I like in Art Exhibitions but the house would soon be full and bank balance empty if I bought them all!

Then I headed home again to be in time for tennis watching.

  1. I too buy the cards as I can’t afford the original or sometimes even the print and then have to get it framed.
I have a pair of cards purchased in Norfolk they depict a row of seals sitting on a bridge eating fish and chips from a paper parcel and another of seals in a boat watching the humans sunbathing.Just tickled me.

    1. I'm traditional in what I like - country views mostly. The one I liked was of woodland with all green colours

  2. Some lovely work - but as you say, if you bought your favourites, the walls would be full and the bank balance empty. We have two pictures bought by Norfolk artists, and I love them, they hang in the lounge. But I enjoy looking at exhibitions and deciding which I like most. The peeled satsuma is very clever, but I wouldn't want it in my house, even at £3.95, let alone £395

    1. I suppose I have got room for one or two more paintings but that means drilling holes - which I'm hopeless at doing

  3. We also only buy cards, we went to an exhibition recently which was very enjoyable ( set in a beautiful church new to us) but the prices even for modest size works were eyewatering. The cakes and coffee were good!

  6. Lovely art but too expensive for me, sadly. I did very much like the strawberry painting but £395! I think the plasticky painting is durable Resin. I have seen a man doing it on Money for Nothing, usually on a table, so much larger.
I buy cards from art exhibitions too, I have framed some of them. Carole R.

  7. The exhibition is overwhelming - delight for the eye in every direction. I couldn't justify spending hundreds of pounds on artwork, so would also settle for cards.

  8. That's a lot of art! I do struggle though, with the unframed works offered here as they end up looking like jumble sale! The prices are exorbitant here too.

  9. A lot of very striking Artwork there. I'm not keen on the heavy black frames.

  10. For someone who lives in the country, you have access to a lot of artists and art. Is Suffolk an artist magnet?

  11. I wish our churches hosted art sales. Viewing art and being able to appreciate the wide range of talent on display is so enjoyable.
Finding something to buy and adding to your collection is always great.
