Cricket Endings and Cheese Tasting

Was anyone else following the cricket Test Match? England V India. What an amazing ending with India winning by 6 runs.  Who says cricket is boring. Of course India would never had won if England hadn't had so many injuries!!

It made the series end 2 each. Although there can't be many (any other?) sports where it's possible for two teams to play over 5 days and still end in a draw!

Now and again I've been buying cheeses not tried before to see what they are like. Recently I went to the newly re-opened farm shop - thinking they would have lots of interesting cheeses. But they hadn't and this below was the only one that I'd not come across elsewhere.

What a disappointment this was, more rubbery than tasty. It was eaten but I'd not bother again.

Here's a link to the farm company that make it Joseph Heler Cheeses and a little bit copied from their website.

Hidden away in the heart of the Cheshire countryside, near the market town of Nantwich, lies the Joseph Heler family dairy on Laurels Farm. It is here that our team of expert cheese makers produce classic British regional cheese to time-honoured recipes.

Our story dates back over a century, when Joseph Heler’s grandmother started the family tradition by making one whole Cheshire cheese every day in the family’s farmhouse – Laurels Farm.

This cheese-making expertise was passed down through the generations to Joseph Heler himself, who in 1957 set up his own company – Joseph Heler Cheese.

Lots of history which didn't make up for this boring cheese!

  1. You recommended Red Fox recently so I bought some. It was OK and I have bought it again since but one that I'm buying every week now is Tesco Cheddar with garlic and herbs. It's delicious and melts in your mouth, you could almost spread it, it's so creamy. I've added it to scrambled egg and it gives it a lovely zing!! It's my new favourite cheese!

  2. Double Gloucester is a favourite cheese of mine. But this doesn't sound anything like that.

    1. Very poor example of something that ought to be good

  3. Disappointing about the cheese. It's getting more difficult now to find different English cheeses in supermarkets, plenty of cheddar and as much mozzarella as you like but not much variety in British cheeses. We have a very good specialist cheese shop in town but it's expensive. Might need to buy more there to get something different and use it or lose it, if we want these cheeses to be available we have to support the shops/ farm shops etc.

  4. I have started eating a 'sweet' cheese, a Lancashire one with fruit (blueberries I think) they do another one but it has a different rather harder fruit in it, probably apricot. Weird but I like it.

  5. The cricket was exciting and India deserved to win.
My favourite cheeses are Double Gloucester and Wensleydale. Red Fox didn't do much for me, and neither did Silver Fox. Barry likes Blacksticks Blue, but doesn't indulge very often. We like Port Salut occasionally, too.

  7. Sad that the cheese didn't live up to it's wonderful back story. You'd think that after a hundred years of making it they would have gotten the taste and texture right. ;-)

Maybe it would have been better grated, I always find the dairy-free cheeses that are rubbery, are much better grated before use.

    1. I always plan to grate to make cheese last longer but then find myself cutting off chunks instead!

  8. I have been glued to all the test matches on the radio and then watching the highlights in the evening. I have many issues with the way the England team played this last day as they had all day to get approx 70 runs so could have played it more conservatively and won it in ones and twos. I know they say that they want to play entertaining cricket but as a fan it is more important to me that they win games and series and although I appreciate that India played very well we should have won that test yesterday. And to make poor Woakes go out and run, he was clearly in agony.

    1. I thought India had no chance when England needed so few runs with a whole day left but India did bowl well, but I agree England could have spun it out a run at a time for the whole day.

  9. I've not tried Blacksticks Blue as mentioned above, will have to look out for it.
These days more and more I'm sticking to good strong cheddar as others often don't live up to the hype.

  11. Lately I like Pepper Jack cheese. It originated in California but seems to be available in most US grocery stores and cheese shops. If you like some spice with a kick this is great. It contains hot peppers and herbs.
Grilled cheese and sliced tomato make a tasty sandwich. A slice of this cheese on a burger is also good.

    1. As far as I know Pepper Jack isn't a cheese we have here but we do have spicy and peppery cheeses with different names

  12. Have you ever tried your hand at cheese making, Sue? I've always wanted to try....just an easy farmer-type cheese. I'm going to give it a whirl one of these days. Love, Andrea xoxo

    1. Yes I used to make soft cheese when we kept goats and more recently made ricotta with a cheese making kit. Sadly an electric induction hob which is what I have here is useless for cheesemaking as it won't keep a steady temperature.
