The weather turned really autumnal here yesterday, although it was sunny up until 4pm when there was a fantastic thunderstorm with rain and hail and the electric went off for an hour.
The wind had knocked five of the Charles Ross apples off the minarette trees while I was away so they were quickly peeled and stewed. There are still a couple left and a few eating apples on the Falstaff tree.
My own sown sweetcorn is finally ready for eating - very delicious. I shall eat a cob most days until they've gone, there are only half a dozen and some very small ones. Everything else is definitely finished unless the courgette plant puts on a late spurt.
After the days away out and about visiting places I'm going to have a quiet weekend at home. Although I do need to do a shopping trip - I'm fresh vegetables (apart from the sweetcorn) and fresh fruit less, and I need eggs. Plus the bread maker needs to go on and I'd better go and get a few beetroot from BiL's garden.
I'll sort out photos of the the places I visited on the coast ready for posts for next week.
Have a good weekend.
We're loving our corn on the cob, picked, prepped and cooked within minutes, delicious!

Yes, it's completely different to anything bought that has been picked days beforehand
DeleteI need to don wellies and go up into the orchard and see what is ready to pick, and if any windfalls too. Shan't need to buy apples for a while anyway. The little trees are getting nicely established now, although the plums take longer and only one of the pears has fruit on it.
ReplyDeleteMy eating apples are not quite ready but will be soon although there are only 4 or 5 anyway!
DeleteLovely to be your own produce and some from BIL’s garden too. Catriona
ReplyDeleteThere are still loads of beetroot in his garden, he grew some extra for me but there are dozens!
DeleteFresh corn on the cob is delicious. Always nice to have some apples from your own trees too.

It's the time of year that I miss the places we lived that had proper big apple trees rather than my small ones
DeleteEven though I'm not ready to bid farewell to summer (I felt it got cut too short!), there is something cozy and comforting about fall, not the least of it are the colors and the food. I love sweet corn and think it's wonderful you grew your won. I bet it was delicious! And apples are the perfect autumn fruit. This one made me smile.
ReplyDeleteSummer seemed to stop very suddenly here- now there's been thunderstorms and heavy rain showers
DeleteIt's a quiet weekend around here too, the first in awhile, so I'm looking forward to it. Enjoy yours, Sue. Love, Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteInvited out for sunday lunch with family so not as quiet as I thought
DeleteWe shan't need to buy apples for months to come, fortunately. There are still one or two raspberries ripening day by day, too.
ReplyDeleteThe Autumn raspberries were all really early so only the odd one or two now
DeleteAll our apples are now lightly stewed and in the freezer, apart from the one annoying one left on the tree, that is hanging so far over into the neighbours garden we can't reach, and believe me Alan tried!! It looks tantalisingly good too.
ReplyDeleteI spent this morning putting the little vegetable raised bed to sleep for the Winter, transplanting the two surviving herbs into the edge of it, then the rain came back heavy and very 'stop start-y'. We have had Autumn since the 1st September here, chilly and lots and lots of rain.
Autumn arrived suddenly on the 12th with heavy rain spells and thunderstorms. I'm doing a bit of garden clearing but there's so much Buddleia to cut back it will take weeks
DeleteHome grown corn, freshly picked and cooked is delicious. Nothing like the grocery store corn.
ReplyDeleteAfter a holiday, a bit of quiet is good.
Have a nice weekend, Sue.
I only eat corn from the cob if I've grown it - otherwise it's old
DeleteYou have not eaten corn on the cob until you've eaten it freshly picked. I used to buy it at the farm gate when I lived in Virginia, ten ears for $1.00, a very long time ago! That was good, but not anywhere near as good as my homegrown!
ReplyDeleteNow it's £1 a cob I expect!
DeleteMy aunt would put water on to boil for corn on the cop and then send us kids out to pick enough for dinner - boiling water by the time we picked and shucked.

That's the way to do it
DeleteOne of lifes great pleasures is sweetcorn straight of the bush, enjoy! JennyP
ReplyDeleteIt's delicious
DeleteI love sweet corn. Such a treat!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I think I wont bother but then I remember the special-ness of it
DeleteWe loved our corn on the cob, but this year we only got enough for three meals. It didn't seem to grow very well.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I was glad I got the earlier plants from a boot-sale and now my plants are finally ready
DeleteJust a few tomatoes left to pick then that’s it for the year.
ReplyDeleteExcept the pears which are proving difficult to get right. Picking them when they look ready then finding them mushy and brown. x
There was a pear tree like that at my previous home - in 4 years there I never did work out the right time to pick and eat.
DeleteGlad to know it’s not just me! x
DeleteSweetcorn? You are so lucky. The badgers got to eat all of ours 😭 Homegrown cobs taste so good 👍
