Dunwich Heath

National Trust land - saved for the Nation, but £6 to park as I'm no longer a member.

This is an area all along this part of the coast which is protected heathland. I don't think I've ever seen the heather so colourful before

The view north to Dunwich village, Southwold in the distance and the cliffs that fall into the sea every winter.

The heathland was beautiful in the sunshine

This collection of buildings were once cottages for the coastguards. Now they are holiday lets and tearooms and shop all belonging to the National Trust

  1. Looks lovely in the sun, I bet it's a different story in bad weather!

    1. It would be very blowy up there in the open heathland!

  2. When you say 'the cliffs that fall into the sea every winter,' do you mean that the cliffs are gradually being eroded? Erosion fascinates and terrifies me, or would if I lived on coastal cliffs.

    1. Yes, often a metre or two disappears each year. There's was a village called Eastern Bavants, just north of Southwold that just isn't there anymore! It's frightening which areas are deemed to be not worth protecting along the coast here.

  3. Looks like a great place for a walk. I'm always so sorry for people whose homes are threatened by coastal erosion, there's no stopping the sea.

    1. Many many homes have been lost to the sea in this part of Suffolk over the years

  5. That's looks lovely. I remember those beautiful blue skies ... it's been grey here for weeks now. Would it be worth paying for a pensioners membership to the National Trust, or asking for one for Christmas or your birthday? We switched to this level a couple of years ago and it does save a bit of money.

    1. There's just so few NT places to visit in the area and I've been to all of them several times so not worth joining now

  6. Shouldn't really say this, but how often do you take the grands out with you to NT property? You see, buying an annual membership in the Young Person's category is considerably cheaper than an adult, but it comes with all the perks, including parking!

  7. I love the heather's colour at this time of year.
We were up in North Yorkshire last week and I was so upset to see how much of the beautiful moors was devastated by wild fires, some of which were still smouldering. I remember picnics on the moor with my aunt, uncle and cousins when as I child I was sent to them for a summer holiday. They lived in Marske-by-the-Sea. We would pick wild bilberries and have purple fingers for weeks after. I do hope nature can repair the damage.

    1. Burning used to be a part of regular regeneration of heather moors so hopefully it will recover in North Yorkshire.

    1. We should be grateful to the National Trust. I just wish their prices for joining made it more available to everyone rather than just the retired wealthy!

  9. Walking the moors and beach makes a great day. The views are fantastic. No crowds make it all ideal. Lovely sandy beach too.
The amount of seaside erosion is shocking, especially after a storm. Homes have been swept into the sea along the MA coast as well. It surprises me to see people rebuild and put homes on stilts. I wonder how long that will secure the home.
NT ability to take over seaside locations and make them available to everyone is outstanding.

  10. Like you, not many NT properties close to me, so I wouldn't bother with membership either. Worth the £6 parking to get some sea air and lovely walks though.

  12. What a lovely place to visit, but erosion scares me. We are on the edge of the valley here, and I keep a close watch on the valley edge. So far so good, but it is still a worry when your see slumping on the other side.

    God bless.

  14. I stayed in one of those NT cottages for a weekend a number of years ago now. Very nice cottage but it had been freshly painted inside and I had a very allergic reaction, sadly, so spent the weekend sneezing and itchy eyes. Luckily, the heath was close and the sea so I went outside a lot.
