Last time I went to Southwold in January 2023 it was to visit the church in town and I had problems with the car tyre pressure warning coming on and didn't dare stay too long so it's years since I'd been down to the pier end of the town and hadn't actually been on the pier since it was restored and that was in 2001.
So that's where I went one morning. I'd picked the windiest day and the sea was really rough. The pier has got a couple of shops, the 'Under the Pier ' collection of strange machines, a slot machine arcade, fish and chip shop and a good restaurant..

A couple of the crazy machines , some are very old and others are more recent made by a local Suffolk man.

It was a very high tide and the waves were crashing on the sea wall by the beach huts. These beach huts, day use only, sell for crazy prices, the equivalent of buying a small house or a flat in other parts of the county. No one using them on a rough September day.
I had a crab salad meal in the restaurant - it was delicious.

That was a wild and windy day. The beach huts are pretty - they probably need to be painted every year.

DeleteThe last time I had fresh crab was on Guernsey - around 1982 . . . Crazy paying out so much for what is basically a garden shed by the sea . . .

Would have been very wet for anyone sitting in them last week. My car was on the car park behind the beach huts and the windscreen was covered in spray and salt when I got back to it

DeleteI love the dramatic rough ocean with waves crashing ashore and high wind carrying a salt mist. The pier and beach huts are taking a beating, but they seem to hold firm. Amazing.

DeleteMy parents rented one of those beach huts for a week each year, even that must have stretched them financially. The whole week different cousins would come down for the day and we had such freedom playing on the beach or walking down to the pier. If we were lucky we got a 99 ice cream once during the week. A huge treat. The little cafe at the other end of the beach is still there and I try visit it each time I get back to Suffolk.

DeleteI've only just now tumbled to where you are in England -- this whole time I've been imagining you south of London, not northeast! (I often get Suffolk and Sussex confused.) Oh well. Now it's straight in my mind. I've never been to Southwold or that part of the English coast but I always love a good pier.

DeleteOh, I love carb salad! I bet it was very fresh too - we mostly get frozen seafood as we are so far from the ocean.
