Ixworth is one of those villages that used to be important and almost a town but now the main roads go round instead of through and there are just a couple of shops left in the High Street.
Just behind some of the houses in the High Street stands the large church. I looked at a map before I got there unlike Simon Knott on the Suffolk churches website who cycled right past!
The church has two side aisles so is almost as wide as it is long.
In the north aisle is the small lady chapel, with it's mother and child stature and it's own small altar.
It was a bit gloomy in the chancel
The tomb is for Richard Coddington from the 1560s
The Stained glass below is from the 20th Century

It feels a very cold and uninviting church but I do like the stained glass window. Maybe it seems different in person. Is there an NT property nearby the name seems familiar?
ReplyDeleteMaybe you are thinking of Ickworth which is the other side of Bury St Edmunds - no connection to Ixworth
DeleteYes you are right...we went on a Centre Parcs visit once.
DeleteI love the vivid blue 💙 of that kneeler in the chancel. And the C20 stained glass is wonderful with its use of text . Why does SK think using a satnav is "stupid" I wonder?
ReplyDeleteI wondered that too. I often can't find churches especially when they are up long lanes not in the village
DeleteBuilt on the back of wool, no doubt. Love the stained glass window and it has a beautiful exterior, with the flint walls and porch.
ReplyDeleteI thought it wasn't very interesting compared to others and considering how important Ixworth once was
DeleteThat is a beautiful church.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how some places get left as a reminder of things. Thank you for sharing.
So many churches still to visit!
DeleteIt must have been a gray day when you visited. I bet the church would look better with full sun streaming in those windows.
ReplyDeleteI thought it looks rather grand, I wonder how much it costs to heat it in winter!

Beautifully built. Interesting that it has side aisles. Stained glass does bring lovely color and brilliance, especially the words for 20C people who were taught to read. Thanks for the visit.
ReplyDeleteLots of lovely features to look at in this church. Catriona
ReplyDeleteWide as long makes a very big church. Two side isles seem unique. The arrival looks grand and set in a large landscape.
