Christmas Tree

One of the winter illustrations from Angela Harding's book 'A Year Unfolding; A Printmakers View' She also used this as the front cover of 'Winter's Song' One of four pocket sized books published this year for each season - mainly with illustrations already published in her original book as well as some newer prints.

Winter,  Bringing back the tree

There was a year at the smallholding when we could have walked across fields and pulled a tree home . Red House Barns in Sternfield - across the fields from us started planting Christmas trees and using a barn there as a Pop-up Christmas Decoration shop, we walked there once or twice but  with no snow, pulling a tree home across muddy fields  would have been a bit messy!
The trees we planted at the smallholding - in the hope of having our own - never did well, and never got big enough to use.

Ang at  Tracing Rainbows had Oh Christmas Tree or O Tannenbaum on her blog the other day so here's a different Christmas tree song.

Got my tree out of it's box and decorated during the week. It was the turn of mainly red and gold to come out of the bags in the box this year along with more natural colours. I have so many bits and bobs gathered from charity shops, car boot sales and home made over the years that I can have a variation every year.

I came across a tiny decoration that I don't remember at all..........................

and 2 pottery Santas that I'd forgotten.......................

And then there is the Colin decoration the family gave me that first Christmas without him, decorations hand made by me, friends and the few bits found from the charity fairs this year

It would Never win any "Best Decorated Christmas Tree" competition for sure but it's fine for me - not many others will see it!

Yesterday's Advent calendar coffee, day 4, just said Dark Roast - so I'm still waiting for the more interesting. Then I went to see the hygienist who I've been avoiding, I do go to the dentist 6 monthly but opted out of hygienist for a couple of years, as the dentist bills were plenty big enough. I was really nervous and remembered why! Another big bill paid. Back there for a filling on Monday - Oh Great Joy!

  1. Thanks for sharing all the beautiful memories of years past while you decorated your tree. It looks splendid!

  2. Sorry to hear about the filling - sounds like my house! And congratulations on getting your tree up and decorated! I need to make a list of December things to do and stop fooling around.

    1. I'm better at coping with dentist rather than hygienist - too much water squirting. I might not go again for a while

  3. I like your idea of choosing a colour theme for your tree 🌲. I’m decluttering and re-arranging how and where I store my decorations after Christmas this year. I have 3 sets of beads red, gold and green. When I pack them away I might colour code them for storage in those colours. Like you I have too many decorations and am able to sort them like this. Thank you for the idea.

    1. I forgot to put the beads on 'til last so it's a bit muddled - I didn't have the enthusiasm to take everything off and redo!

  4. That is my favourite Angela Harding illustration. I had a Christmas card of her robin which I photocopied and reduced down for my homemade Advent calendar and it was yesterdays window.
Your tree is lovely, I especially like the little knitted jumper.

    1. I have a few cards of hers that I found at a car boot sale - I'm loathe to send them!

  5. You've got a lovely selection of ornaments. All these Christmas trees going up everywhere - I'm resisting for a bit longer. Some tidying to do first.

    1. I've only been doing the tree this early since Colin died - it's a bit of cheer for December

  6. Your ornaments look lovely. We also have many ornaments and not all of them go on the tree every year. I mentioned once that I might theme the tree and there was uproar, the family insist it is kept to vintage bits from my grandparents and parents, wonky things they have made and baubles we have collected over the years. They're probably right.

    1. The charity shops have hundreds of ornaments/tree decorations every year and so do all the pop-up special Christmas shops - I know where I buy from

  7. The best trees are always the one's that are covered with memories. They have meaning where the annual styled and themed don't.

  8. I love that your tree ornaments all have a history. You are very on trend with your little jumper this year as they seem to be everywhere! Catriona

    1. The awful thing is - I can't remember who gave it to me - which is so bad.

  9. Christmas trees going up everywhere. I need to clear a space first, or perhaps just decorate all Barry's 'stuff.'

  10. I too love Angela Harding. I have an AH cake tin that a friend bought some years ago for my birthday. Incidentally Sue those rather nice liqueurs that you like are currently on sale in a bargain supermarket beginning with 'L' for a very good price!

  11. Like you I've been avoiding the hygienist as it's extra on the dental budget.
Your tree looks very pretty - we really should get ours sorted!

  12. I still love Angela Harding's work, it's so simple yet so evocative. Your Christmas tree decorations are lovely this year, I do love a traditional red, gold and green colour scheme. :-)

  13. My little tree will go up this weekend. I love all of the old ornaments as they bring back happy memories of years gone by. I now put my vintage breakable ones in the curio cabinets so my 2 year old grandson doesn't break them!

    1. Small children, cats and dogs - all dangerous for tree decorations although last year it was me who dropped and broke the only glass one I had

  14. Your Christmas tree looks lovely, and I love the red and gold theme.
My tree is up and decorated too. When I get up at 6 AM, the first thing I do is light up the tree!
Not all hygienists are equal. I had one that created a flood too. I refused to work with her. The second hygienist put a small suction device in my mouth to catch all the water as she was cleaning my teeth. It worked well and now I specifically name this hygienist for my cleaning.
