Tonight's full moon is called the Wolf Moon named by Native Americans and Medieval Europeans due to the hungry wolves coming to the villages for food.
Every now and again there is talk of reintroducing wolves to the UK. After persecution in the 17th century they disappeared from here but remain in a few Eastern European countries.
It's unlikely they could be brought here as they need many square miles of woodland, open country and plenty of wild deer or wild boar to hunt.
Yesterday was another day of tidying up, finishing the paper work sorting plus working out how to use my new hoover [AKA a vacuum cleaner in other countries!) I found one online £100 cheaper than original price. Never want to pay full price or too much - they don't seem to survive for many years however much is paid for them. I got a Vax upright this time- I'll see how I get on with it. I got out for a short quick walk while the sun was shining, only to the bottle bank - not very exciting.
Have a good weekend - I'll be back Monday.

Given that deer in England have no real predators (other than humans) and are on course to take over and destroy many parts of the country, reintroducing wolves to control them sounds like a good idea....shame about the side effects of everything else that the wolves would eat?
ReplyDeleteAny walk is a good walk!

Congratulations on getting out for a walk; I stuck my head out of the door and pulled it back in again like a tortoise. Tooooo cold! Husband walked to nearby corner shop for bread at a quick march.
ReplyDeleteI want to start walking daily now we are in 2026, if my knee allows it, if not every other day.Self care is my word for 2026. Have a healthy contented year Sue. June
ReplyDeleteIn France there are around 1000 wolves around, I thought they were reintroduced a few decades ago but apparently they came back naturally through the Alps. Farmers are not pleased because they regularly kill sheep, so it's an ongoing debate...

I read an article about reintroducing wolves to cull the deer population which is out of control but that would not be good for farm and other animals. We bought an upright VaX with two batteries and tools earlier this year in a deal from Vax, and so far have been pleased with it. I think over the years I have had most of the big makes but they don’t seem to last long despite looking after them. Catriona
ReplyDeleteMy sister's stick Dyson was hard to use and now the battery life is waning and will only last a few minutes. I still like my corded one for which I sent for a number of free spare parts before the guarantee ran out. Unless anything disasterous happens with it I shouldn't need to replace it for years.
ReplyDeleteLet us all know how you find the Vax.
I still use my GTech rechargeable 'hoover', I have always been really satisfied with them. Easy to use and really lightweight. Alan has a Vax carpet cleaner that is really good, he gets it out once or twice a year and gives all the carpets and rugs a really good clean.
ReplyDeleteThey talk about releasing wolves into the Scottish highlands regularly don't they. I guess they would be good natural predators for all the deer, as long as they don't kill all the little Haggis. ;-)
There are wolves in most mainland European countries. Even in small countries like Belgium and the Netherlands (where I live). Like Maguy said, it is an ongoing debate here as well. There are about 100 wolves here and they mainly eat wild animals, but some kill sheep as well.
ReplyDeleteHere in NJ we have a big over population of deer, but my suggestion of reintroducing the grey wolf never gets taken up for some reason.
ReplyDeleteMmm...not sure I would fancy the re-introduction of wolves here in Staffordshire. There are lots of deer including Muntjacs but lots of sheep too as well as hens.
ReplyDeleteHave a good weekend Sue,
Angie
It's inevitable that any reintroduced wolves would eat some livestock. I'm not taking a firm position, because I know little about the subject, but I'm more inclined than not to side with the wolves.
ReplyDeleteThe full moon is very lovely. Moonlight creates beautiful shadows on the snowy ground.
ReplyDeleteI've not seen or heard about any wolves nearby. Our deer population is out-of-control again and I do believe wolves would reduce that population. If the deer attract wolves, that would be beneficial.
When nature takes on over population, I see it as a good thing.
The moon is beautiful! I went shopping this afternoon and when I came out of the store it was dark already - I liked having the moon above me as I drove home.
ReplyDeleteI can hardly wait until the weather warms up enough to be outside and walk. I am trying to get as many steps as possible walking inside right now.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Happy New Year. the moon the last two days has been spectacular, so bright yesterday that I thought it was daytime at 5.20am! Vacuum cleaners/hoovers don't last long with me, I have a vax but have wooden floors so use a broom more often - getting rid of carpet downstairs was the best thing I ever did. You did well to save 100 quid on your purchase. Do you use Topcashback ? I do, you get money back by letting them take you to the website you want to purchase from. I save about £100 a yeara with it and more if I use it when I renew things like insurance. Betty
ReplyDeleteForest of Dean - perfect for wolves as they have far too many wild boar!!
ReplyDeleteThe moon looks stunning on a clear, summer evening on this side of the world.

Wolves have been reintroduced in parts of our country, not without much debate. Here we have coyotes. We also have hunters who view them as savage killers. I don't quite get it, myself. They are predators. They are part of a food chain. We do not shoot them on our property. There is no reason to. We se them on the game cameras from time to time.
ReplyDeleteHere in Germany we're having wolves now in nearly all parts of the country up to parts of the north. The wolves are now attacking sheep, cattle and horses and it is forbidden to hunt them. I don't think it's a good idea to have predators in heavily populated areas. Many politicians are romancing the return of the wolves claiming it to be "natural ". The shepherds don't agree...
ReplyDeleteI'm using a cord Dyson now for more than 20 years and I'm still very content with it. Gudrun
