An Unwise Car Boot Sale Purchase?

It was back in 2021 that I found this plant stand from a car-boot sale for £20.

Since then it's been painted twice, had plants on and off and  seems to have been mentioned in 15 blog posts!

After it's new paint and update this was it in May last year.

It's tied to the trellis and is a bit rickety now, all the shelves are sloping forwards rather a lot but it's still just about usable and everything - mainly various succulents, survived the winter.

But when I spotted this at Stonham Barns car-boot sale on Sunday and the lady wanted £5 I bought it. It's very sturdy  and I thought it would be a good replacement................BUT it was only afterwards that I wondered if it is actually made for standing outside as it has solid shelves!

With no drainage on the shelves maybe it would be better to re-sell it as I'm sure it's worth more than £5.

  1. You could drill some holes in shelves with a large drill bit or look on it as a short term item, I’m sure it will last a couple of years if painted each year. Sarah Browne.

  2. I agree with Sarah. Some drainage holes and weatherproof paint. Or try FB Marketplace and get your money back. It looks well made

  3. I'd find a use for it somewhere. It looks too good to send it on its merry way

  4. It looks really sturdy, so I think I would see if I could add some drainage holes. A lot of the ones I have seen recently don't look as if they would stand up to one good wind gust.

  5. I've done that before, got the most perfect item, once home only to find it's not what I want. Try using a shoe race, I find them useful for plant pots.

  6. How about sitting your plants in little plant saucers ? I like to gather succulents together too . They make a lovely feature.

  8. Lovely shelf unit but agree it probably won’t stand up to the weather. Catriona

  9. The new shelf looks very well built. Would a couple coats of polyurethane make it waterproof and useable outside?

  10. I'm sure it's worth finding a use for, it was a bargain at a fiver. :-)

  11. Five pounds is a steal! A couple of years ago Dave and I bought a new shelf unit for our plants and only kept it a short time -- the shelves were too closely placed, with not enough height for the plants, and then the slats started falling out! I was so annoyed.

  12. That shelving unit was a great bargain. I would do what others have said and drill some drainage holes in the wood.

    God bless.

  13. Well worth a fiver. As someone else said, get someone to put a few holes in it or find somewhere in the house where you could use it for a little seasonal display.
