The cars that had loudspeakers and drove around the streets before General Elections reminding people to vote?
How libraries worked before computers?
Nightdress cases, you put your nightie or PJs in it in the morning and took them out at again at bedtime? My sister had one shaped like a poodle. Youngest daughter said she had one that was a clown with bits attached like a zip and buttons and laces for learning - I'd forgotten - she said it was a happy clown and she wasn't traumatized!
Two years ago Ipswich Town Football Club went from Championship to Premiership - the top tier of British football. They had one season playing all the big names like Man U, Man City, Arsenal etc etc but at the end of the season they went straight back down to second tier again. On Saturday the were automatically promoted again - Whoop Whoop! I have no idea how they'll get on with the 'Big Boys' next season but for now it's made a lot of people very happy!
Have a good Bank Holiday Monday for everyone in the UK.
Many things had "cases" in my childhood.Do you remember when people kept their boxes of tissues in fabric cases to cover the cardboard? My parents had a tooled leather case which said Radio Times in gold (But they could only afford to buy it at Christmas] And as for covers for the loo rolls...Crinoline ladies, and bizarre crochet poodles....
ReplyDeleteOh you've brought back memories! My father was in the Army and we served abroad often. I remember one Christmas a parcel arriving with a present for me from my grandparents, a beautiful silky nightie case which had a pretty pixies face on it.
ReplyDeleteI loved it. Thanks for the reminder!
Penny
My sister had a clown nightdress case. I haven't thought about that for years.
ReplyDeleteI remember the cars with loudspeakers and libraries before computers and without people chatting on their phones, snacking or letting their children run around in there too.
I had a handkerchief case ! Anne in Lancs
ReplyDeleteThe water board used to come around in a van with a megaphone too if there was a problem with supply.
ReplyDeleteI once made one of those pyjama covers in the form of a dragon for a WI County Round competition.
I also remember when chocolate bars were full size and value for money.
Yes I too remember the nightie/pyjama case, I think mine was a dog? Simple times…happier times? Definitely, my parents generation had gone through two wars. WW1 as children, WW2 as adults. As had the rest of the world. Everyone craved peace and just to live their lives doing “normal” things. How very disappointed they would be to see the world today. June
ReplyDeleteWe never had pj cases, just folded them under our pillow. Apart from one the nuns had us make in my last year of prep school... horrible fraying blue fabric which had to be embroidered before maching on an ancient treadle sewing machine!
ReplyDeleteLovely memories. I remember the loud speakers at election times. Didn't have a nightdress case but did have one for handkerchiefs. I had an auntie who made me a little apron each Christmas and presented it with a huge bar of chocolate - well it seemed huge then:)
ReplyDeleteYes to the loudspeakers. I always wanted a pyjama case but sadly funds never ran to niceties like that in my childhood home. Lovely sunny day here so garden and garage tidying will be done. Catriona
ReplyDeleteI was always fascinated by the election loud speaker vans. I loved flicking through the drawers of book information tickets in the library to search for something, and tucking my new books tickets into my library tickets ready for the librarian stamping my book and taking it out. I too, had a poodle nightdress case ๐
ReplyDeleteLike Catriona above, I always wanted one of those nightie/pyjamas cases but never got one……..it’s always nice to go down memory lane and smile at the sometimes slightly strange things that we thought would change our lives if given ๐
ReplyDeleteAlison in Devon x
I remember the library before computers. The card catalog with many, many drawers filled with the cards to search for the topics you wanted. And the date due cards that were stamped and put in the pocket of the book so you knew when to bring it back.
ReplyDeleteI had a Raggedy Ann pajama case that I loved. Yes remember the old libraries we had and the little picket with the slip and you could keep your book out a lot longer than you can now.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, nightdress cases, and the Wombles hot water bottle covers!
ReplyDeleteThank you everyone for lovely memories! I'm puzzling over what Nightdress case I had - no idea.
ReplyDeleteI remember using the index when visiting the library. I can also remember writing my name on the card in the pocket of the library book. I wonder if they will ever bring that back. I had a blue lady shaped nightgown/pj holder and my sister had a pink one.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I remember seeing a few cars with loudspeakers but not in a very long time.
ReplyDeleteNightdress or PJ boxes are new to me. I've never heard of them.
I also remember when our school library and town library both had card catalogs and no computers.
I remember milk deliveries. He came early in the morning and we had a box on the front porch. My father delivered bread and drove his van home for lunch. We got sweet rolls.
ReplyDeleteOur pajamas were tucked under into our pillow cases.
We still have milk in glass bottles delivered overnight three times a week by a small local business. Bottles are put in a cool box with two freezer blocks, the box is to not only keep milk cold but to deter the foxes and birds, does so satisfactorily.
ReplyDeleteMakes us sound very rural but this is SW London. ๐ฆข
Really good to see Ipswich Town going up again! My sister will be really pleased they have automatically qualified as the play-offs would have been when she was celebrating her birthday and there are lots of football fans in her family.
ReplyDeleteI loved my nightie holder. Kept things a bit warmer as there was no central heating back then lol
Never had a PJ case, but it reminds me of eiderdowns, hot water bottles and candlewick bedspreads!
