An Easy to Find and Delicious Cheese

I got this to use in some home made cheese/onion and spinach bakes but tried a piece and decided it was too delicious to hide inside pastry and then had to try another chunk and then remembered it could make a blog post!

This is Red Fox, a vintage Red Leicester - matured for 18 months . Three generations of the Beckett family have been farming and cheese making at Belton Farm, Whitchurch in Shropshire since 1922.
Its a lovely colour with a  strong and nutty taste.

More about Red Fox HERE. My piece came from Aldi but I think it's available in several supermarkets. £2.29 for 220g at Aldi. (£3.15 at Waitrose - that's quite a difference) Much nicer than many very more expensive cheeses I've tried  for the 'Cheese Tasting' blog posts.

  1. I used to love a good Red Leicester, a little sprinkle added to a mostly cheddar quiche was always my favourite, for both taste and looks.

  2. Thanks for the recommendation, a tasty cheese that isn't too expensive is worth knowing about. Thank you for the book list yesterday, as you say very dangerous!

  4. I recently tried Red Leicester for the first time {I know, how did it take me so long} and was amazingly impressed with what I'd previously ignored as uninteresting! Boy, was I wrong. Will look on Tesco to see if they have this one.

    1. Some Red Leicester can be a bit bland and rubbery - only good for adding colour to quiche of scones but this was good

  5. I'm avoiding cheese at present. I like it too much, but red Leicester has been a favourite for many years.

  6. Hell fire Sue, just when I’m considering getting my aged and decrepit body into another shape other than rotund! You are a temptress to my love of cheese lass.

  8. I will look for Red Leicester, ideally from Red Fox. The US Aldi is called Trader Joe's, and they might carry this cheese. Thanks for the recommendation.

  9. I've never heard of it. I don't think my store carries it.

  11. We've had the Red Fox, I love it although husband's not so keen....he doesn't really like strong cheeses (more for me!).

  12. I love strong crumbly cheese. This, with crackers, would never make it to the table!

  13. One of our favourite cheeses. It's a vad day when there isn't Vintage Red Fox in the fridge. I think most of the supermarkets sell it in various packaging.
