Possibly the 16th Vegetarian Taste Test?

As mentioned on last Saturdays post I came across another 'new' vegetarian oven bake to try from Aldi. I like the way they state "I'm New" on the packet so you know you haven't tried it before and dismissed it as rubbish!

Three cheese and tomato lattice. The cheeses are listed as Cheshire, halloumi and 'medium fat semi hard cheese' - whatever that is! They are mixed with a tomato sauce and inside puff pastry with a sprinkling of dried parsley.

They look very good on the pack and just as good on the plate after cooking. But as happens so often it didn't have a lot of flavour.

£1.99 for a pack of two but quite high in calories and fats. Good to try but after I've eaten the other one I won't be buying again.

Eating this and writing the post has nudged me back to making my own oven bake type things, which I've not done for a while for some reason, so puff pastry has been added to my shopping list.

That's almost the last of my Sweet and Sour Pickled Cucumber on my plate, I've been eking it out - must make a lot more this year, it's lovely as an extra vegetable through the winter. The recipe is on the separate recipe page.

  2. They say we eat with our eyes, but taste does win or lose the day in the end. Sorry it disappointed, but they so often do. I've got some things in my freezer that I honestly can't face eating again they were so vile, so might as well toss them to the bird table.

    1. This wasn't bad enough to abandon - just short on flavour

  3. A pity the veggie bake wasn't more tasty, I'm sure your homemade versions will be better.
You've reminded me how much I like 'bread and butter' cucumber pickles, must check I've got things ready for when we have our glut of cucumbers.

    1. I don't know why I've not made any pasty type things for ages - just got out of the habit I guess

  4. My Mum was a lifelong vegetarian due to digestive issues. She was always trying new veggie bakes and being disappointed. If it was a two-pack the second one nearly always went into the bin. If it was nice then it was almost always a 'special' and immediately discontinued.

    1. I know what you mean. The one thing I tried recently from Aldi that actually was good was something they only had in for Christmas.

  5. It certainly looks very appetising - what a pity it didn't live up to expectations.

  6. The picture looks good. Do the makers taste the products before selling them? The ingredients sound good together. Maybe good seasonings and herbs would improve the flavor.

    1. I hope they taste things!
I've been cooking from scratch for so long maybe it's because I'm used to better quality and more flavour with home made

  8. At least it actually looked like the photo on the pack, that's a step in the right direction. It's just a pity it didn't taste as good as it looked. Oh well, onwards and onwards.

    1. Or even ... onwards and upwards. Alan spoke to me as I was typing, I've obviously lost my ability to multi-task. 😄

  10. Thank you for the heads up! If I see them in the store here, I will know to avoid them. But it's always worth trying because they do have so many interesting offerings.
