The Third Food Shopping Trip of June

Filling a blog post with shopping photos seems to have become a regular thing. That's the problem with not going very far or doing anything exciting.

So here it is ..........last week's  Aldi food shop and some things from Asda to get my £1 car park money back.

From left to right - pack of 4 nectarines £1.39;Cauliflower £1.19; Beetroot £1.39; Tin  Sardines 47p; Carrots 1Kg 69p; Potatoes £1.05; Butter £1.99; 400g Extra Mature Cheddar £2.49;  6 Eggs  £1.49. 2 Willow Spread @ 97p = £1.94; Castor sugar £2.25. Not in the photo are 1 dozen small bottles of lemonade that I keep in the car £3.58 - they will last until the end of the year or even longer.

Total £19.92

The Aldi shop came to several pence more than I wanted to spend because the calabrese that I'd planned to buy looked horribly yellow and unlikely to last long so I got a cauliflower instead (40p more). Their small 44p packs of carrots seemed to be very poor -  small  wrinkled things  - they wouldn't have kept well either and their baby potatoes (75p a few weeks ago) were only in larger packs for £1.05 - in fact their choice of potatoes and pack sizes was well down on the usual.

I'm not sure what had gone wrong at Aldi because as well as the calabrese head turning yellow and the small carrots looking old, when I started to cut into the cauliflower only a couple of days after purchase it was  going mouldy and black inside. I was only able to get one meal from it.

Usually their fruit and veg is pretty reliable - I wonder if they'd had problems with in- store temperatures. If they did last week it will be even worse this week because the extreme HOT 'Amber Alert' weather is due to land on us today. Yesterday wasn't too bad there was a bit of a breeze but  I was glad I didn't have to go far - just a 100yds up the road to get a much needed hair cut and then to the other side of the village to the pharmacy at the Health Centre. I took my bike - it was cooler than walking and it's downhill on the way home.

Stay hydrated folks - we're definitely not used to high 30's ℃

Back Tomorrow

  1. Sorry about the veg quality. Not well stored by the sound of things. I have the option of the big Tesco in Llandod if I cant get the veg I want in Aldi.

It's going to be 30 deg here today, and 34 on Thursday. Defo hiding inside. I made a goodly pizza with leftovers last night, which gave me 4 portions and I don't have to cook tonight, just reheat.

    1. I shall be very wary next time at Aldi - it was disappointing and money wasting.

  2. Such a shame about the cauli, it's too expensive to waste. Maybe the heat is having an adverse effect on veg, like it does on us. We have to go into town today as we have lots of errands but I'm not looking forward to being out in the heat. It's forecast to be 33c here....much too hot for me :0( We need to make an early start and be back as soon as possible, I think.

  3. The cauliflower was disappointing. Rotting from the inside out.

    1. I kept cutting off florets that looked OK on top and finding them black inside - quite unusual

  4. Well, your shopping photo is much more interesting than mine this week. I bought a solitary loaf for £1.60 ... and it wasn't even nice. :-(

I'm hiding away in the house keeping cool, I can't cope with this heat.

  5. I wish I had an Aldi closer than 40 minutes away! Usually, the fruit and vegetables seem good, if frozen. I had to buy a new lawn mower earlier this month and as it was too big to fit in my car, I enlisted a nephew to drive me and persuaded him a detour to Aldi on the way home was essential. Annoyingly, it was 8 pm and the doors were locked when we arrived.

    1. That's annoying to miss your chance of an Aldi visit. I've never had problems with their veg before so hope it was a one off

  6. P.S. Haven't bought caster sugar for quite a while now as I find the Aldi granulated sugar is so finely ground it passes for caster sugar with me.

  7. Seems like most of us are hiding indoors this week.
Our own grown beetroot is now ready and very tasty. Sorry to hear about the low quality veg.

    1. BiL was supposedly sowing some extra beetroot seed so I could share - I'd better check whats happening with it - although too hot to go and look today

  8. Storage problems, supermarkets rely on the quick turnover. Worth a photograph of the cauliflower, date on package, receipt, and an e-mail to complaints. Sometimes a voucher will be sent.
There is a lot of real food there for your money. Very impressive.
I have stocked up on Aldi sardines and pink salmon, much cheaper there than elsewhere.
I freeze the large packs of cheese in weekly ration portions or DH cuts it with a heavy hand. We are still using cheese from the Christmas sales.

  9. Have you tried bringing the spoiled food back to Aldi with your receipt to get a refund? Hope it cools off there for you.

  10. That's unfortunate, about the produce. I agree with the commenter above -- I'd take that cauliflower back and let the store know they have problems in the produce section!
