I forgot to mention yesterday about the final days of Wimbledon. The Wheelchair Men's Doubles final gave Brits Alfie and Gordon another title - well done them. I think that Alfie was then exhausted for the singles final as he was beaten by Tokito Oda the number one seed in two easy sets.
Brit Henry Pattern was one of the pair winning the Men's doubles with Finland's Harri Heliovarra. There was talk of doubles matches getting less coverage ...........
In July 2026, the ATP Tour proposed controversial sweeping cuts internally termed "Product 28" for implementation in 2028. The plan could slash doubles draw sizes in half and heavily reduce the revenue share for doubles players to reinvest in singles.
As someone said...... playing doubles is what most people do in clubs and schools and is still popular to watch at the Slams. It's all about the money.
The men's final on Sunday was a tough match for both men I think, as it went to tie breaks in the first two sets, then Jannik Sinner seemed to dig in and won the next two sets to retain his title from last year. I don't know if Sacha Zverev was affected by a nasty fall, he said he wasn't but ..............
And I heard that Andrew Castle and John Lloyd who have been rolled in as BBC commentators every Wimbledon for donkeys years are being pensioned off - I didn't mind them but I know some people weren't keen.
So all over for another year 😢
Just that football match tomorrow night then - and that will (probably) be the end of my Sports reports 2026 except for the cricket test matches against Pakistan next month.
BUT Only Connect and University Challenge were back last night for quizzy Mondays - so it's not all bad news!
We all love quizzy Mondays! I've enjoyed Wimbledon but it's time for 'normal ' now!
ReplyDeleteAlso spotted Sewing Bee starts tonight - with a guy from Suffolk in it who was a member of the Smallholders Society back in the day.
DeleteLast night's University Challenge was way above my understanding! I couldn't make head nor tail of the questions. My score was ZERO!
ReplyDeleteSame here I think . Only Connect is just as hard - I can usually get a few of the general knowledge on Mastermind
DeleteI saw that Britains Katie Boulter and Aussie player De Minaur had got married on the final day of Wimbledon.
ReplyDeleteThat's nice to hear - I didn't know .
DeleteThere is still a lot of cricket to be played this summer both international and domestic but it is mostly on sky but I prefer to listen to it on the radio 5 live extra. There is also the summer/autumn rugby internationals and they are on itv so very accessible.
ReplyDeleteA fellow sports fan Jane, Nottinghamshire
I like to watch the hour at the end of each days text match but otherwise hear very little about any other. I guess because we don't have Suffolk or Norfolk interest in the domestic it gets very little mention
DeleteYou don't think England will make it to the World Cup finals? Don't give up! :)
ReplyDeleteThey don't have much hope of beating Argentina - too much past history!
DeleteNot a fan of watching tennis on TV. Don't think I could watch the World Cup finals unless I subscribed to a streaming service.
ReplyDeleteThe matches have been on late nights due to time difference so I've not really watched any properly
DeleteI really enjoyed the Wimbledon men's final. I like both players and wasn't worried who won. It was a match played in good spirit without the fear of tantrums or injury feigning.
ReplyDeleteIt was a really good game in the heat, I didn't mind who won either.
DeletePlaying tennis in the high heat had to add an extra level of difficulty.
ReplyDeleteCheers to all the players. I am not following all the tennis but follow a bit via your posts and our news reports.
On to the World Cup!
The US Open tennis is only on paid-for channels here so I wont be able see that - sadly
DeleteI think the doubles are very entertaining. Lots of cheering and yelling in this house with both football and tennis being on.
ReplyDeleteEngland are playing India in ODI at Edgbaston today. We are not doing well. The cricket and football are the reasons OH pays for Sky. I'm just watching re-runs of Garden Rescue, one's a Gothic theme and the other has to be wheelchair friendly. Too hot here for gardening. Xx
