One morning last week I waited for the ice to go from the car windscreen and the sun to come through the fog and went out to get wild bird feed, compost and fresh fruit and to have a walk round the lake at Needham Market for a few photos.
But when I got there it was still foggy and freezing cold. The lake was hidden in the fog so I took a few photos and retreated to the new-ish café, The Duck and Teapot, for a coffee.
The River Gipping flows from near it's namesake village down through Stowmarket, Needham Market, Claydon to Ipswich where it becomes the Orwell to flow out to the sea.
When the last ice age retreated it left deposits of sand and gravel all along the valley and over the years they have been quarried leaving pits that have become public open spaces as here or private fishing lakes at Claydon

That looked a bit chilly. You must have been glad to be inside the cafe with a hot drink. It's hard to imagine there were ever Woolly Mammoths there in the past, looking at it now.
ReplyDeleteOnly 15 minutes from home but the weather was so different!
DeleteIt is definitely colder in your part of the world than it is in this part. I always love these explanatory signboards with their interpretations of past history.
ReplyDeleteMuch milder this week - positively warm!
DeleteBrrr - very chilly.
ReplyDeleteI love the name of the café. xx
I think they had a competition to name it. It's a community interest charity running it
DeleteSome lovely atmospheric photos indeed. I love how fog changes everything.
ReplyDeleteoh, dear, still being published Anonymously! Deb in Wales
DeleteCould only see 50 metres across the lake - but the sun was shining at home less than 10 miles away
DeleteWhoo-hoo - Sue-post this morning. MANY thanks my dear. I'll read it straight away and get it back to you.
ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome - it's a quick read
DeleteLovely photos, and I bet that hot drink was really appreciated.
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to try out the cafe ever since it opened last year
DeleteThe photo of the reeds is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI think I will make it my header for a while!
DeleteThe bones of a juvenile woolly mammoth were found years ago in the center of a marshy forest preserve I like to hike in. There is a picture at the park showing the excavation and bones. I wonder how that juvenile got there and where was its family? How could the woolly mammoths get to England - an island? I don't know enough about prehistoric times, I guess...
ReplyDeleteOnce part of a much bigger land mass we were joined to the main part of Europe before the ice age
DeleteSuch a beautiful place to walk.
ReplyDeleteMuch better in warmer weather!
DeleteI love the natural landscape. The river is beautiful and swans always are lovely to watch. Next time you'll have to have something for the swans. The cafe sounds good too. A warm drink on a cool foggy day is always perfect.
ReplyDeleteIt was a really foggy and frosty morning here yet the sun had come through at home just 15 minutes away
DeleteWhat a great photo of the reeds!!!
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I'll keep it for my header for a while
