208th out of 208

Ann Cleeves has a new book in her Matthew Venn Devon crime series due out on the 31st of this month and I only discovered yesterday.

I quickly reserved it and that's when I found I was 208th on the waiting list.

So................ it's published Thursday, Suffolk libraries have 50 copies on order, it takes a couple of weeks for them to get the copies in and start distributing around the waiting list. Each reader needs to go into their library and collect their book which they can have for up to 3 weeks (or 8 weeks on the mobiles) without going overdue. Some people will have the book for less than 3 weeks.

So can you do the Maths with some sort of algebraic formula to work out in which month I will be able to collect my copy from the library van which only comes once every 4 weeks??

I guess December or January.

We'll see!

  1. If you splurged on a Kindle or used the Kindle app on your laptop/ tablet, you could have books like this at one minute past midnight on publication date. Just now and then, for a treat?

    1. It wouldn't be a treat - it would be a waste of money as I'm happy to wait and use my library. I really don't like reading books on a screen.

  2. Well if you like listening Audible isn't bad. I have got 'The Raging Storm' ordered and should be listening to it when it comes out.

    1. I never liked being read to when I was younger and still don't!

    2. I agree with you Sue. The only time I listen to a book is if I am doing something else. I got a lot of pressure washing done to Bring up the Bodies.

Normally I find listening to a book too annoying as it is too slow. I read much faster than they speak.

  3. When I see that author's name, I always mentally add and 'of' in the middle. Very annoying!
Hope the laptop issue sorts out.

  5. Do not forget to include the fact that the books might not be returned on time!

    1. That's a possibility although hopefully people want to avoid over-due charges

  6. Sorry. Although I'm good at remembering dates and telephone numbers my ability to work that one out will not be happening. My best advice is to put it out of your mind (if that's possible) as you will have other books to read both from the library and your shelves then sometime in the not too distant future there will be a happy surprise for you..

  7. Glad to read your heading was a book (it will arrive eventually at your turn) I thought you had entered something into a class at one of the local shows and it had come last in the judging (that happened to me with bread many years ago - oh the shame of collecting it back!!!)

    1. Luckily they don't have last places in shows around here, just first second and thirds and the rest win nothing!

  9. That would be a complicated equation for me...add in the probability of a percent of fast readers returning the books quickly. I hope you get the book by December or January.

  10. I've done the maths and the answer is - "a fair old time". It might even be as much as "a tidy old time".

    1. Oh well done! I came up with "a fair while" !

  11. The last book I ordered was 'Spare' by Prince Harry. I think I was 1,435th on the waiting list! The library system had ordered 70 copies, and to my amazement, it only took about three months for my turn to come around. I think a lot of readers, like me, only skimmed it. Hope your book also arrives sooner than expected.

    1. Oh my goodness, now that is a proper waiting list!

  12. Thank you, I wouldn't have known about her latest book. Here I am 103 on the hold list and the system is listing 20 copies. However, in looking more closely I don’t think we have the 20 copies, they are on order! So my wait may be as long as yours, Sometimes the library buys large print versions and lists them separately and I have occasionally put myself on that list because it is usually shorter. 13. Some holds get canceled or people finish quickly if it is a "can't put down" book so I bet you get it sooner than you think, Sue! Fingers crossed for you!
