I'm bereft!! The weeks of tennis watching are over for another year. It was sad to see Alfie Hewitt and Gordon Reid lose their wheelchair doubles final on Saturday and then AH must have been exhausted as he lost his singles on Sunday. Good to see wheelchair tennis becoming more important at Wimbledon, playing on main courts with big crowds.
Then it was the men's final, just like the final at the French Open five weeks earlier it was a really good game and this time Jannik Sinner came out on top. The first Italian to win the Wimbledon men's championship. I think this is how it's going to be for many years ahead - two brilliant young players battling it out at every tournament.
I went to the Saturday boot-sale early and it was already huge and crowded, it started cloudy but then the sun came through and it was suddenly Very Hot.
Many of the people selling are there every week, so by now I've seen most of the junk about twenty times before.
But I hadn't seen this book before so just spent 50p, nothing else and by the time I'd been three quarters of the way round I'd had enough - it was getting hotter so home for breakfast.
I'd not come across this book anywhere and it turns out to be a collection of short stories "inspired by remarkable trees" written by students of the University of Suffolk Creative Writing course.
Might be interesting or it might not! It's been added to the shelves with my other Suffolk books to read sometime.

NOT the day to be selling at car boot sales as not many of them have much in the way of shade. Gosh, folk must have been blardy melting. Looks an interesting book for when you are bereft of Library ones.

The French Open was a few weeks ago, next is the US but too late for me to watch even if it's on TV somewhere
DeleteI still have that book 'Remarkable Trees' hollowed out trunks the size of a little room inside. Must have been a very hot day though.

Worth the licence fee for the chance to see so many games from the best seat - and cheaper than the £2000+ for a centre court seat!
DeleteI love following tennis too, and after a Slam finishes I never know what to do with myself. Takes me a few days to get back to normal life, particularly as I live in the southern hemisphere so lots of overnight tv watching.

DeleteIt looks like an interesting book. It's been much too HOT here to wander around anywhere this last weekend. We could have gone back to the Black Country museum free on Sunday for the 1940's weekend, but just couldn't face the heat. Frustrating to say the least.

DeleteThank goodness the tennis is over!! ;-) But I've been watching lots of old detective series on Acorn TV and really enjoying them. I've seen all of The Chelsea Detective, all of London Kills and all the series of Cracker that I recorded off the television sometime last year ... there were a LOT of those.
ReplyDeleteI cannot imagine going to our huge car boot sale in the sort of heat that we had at the weekend, in fact I think I have got car boot sales out of my system so much I got fed up walking round in normal weather last time we went. Shocking!!

Getting to boot sales at 7am it isn't quite so hot!
I think the population is probably in two parts -- those sad the tournament is over, and those relieved it's finally over!

DeleteI was glad the match didn't go to 5 sets as I needed to visit the gym before it closed! It was not as exhausting (for me or the players) as Paris, so I know some were disappointed. In my family, there are former ballboys and girls, so we liked that Sinner thanked them. Did you see him autograph balls for George and Charlotte? Both players were very gracious but Carlos does seem to have a very sweet personality. I haven't been to the US Open for years, since I lived in New York, but am tempted to go this year. It isn't as hard to get tickets in the early rounds. On the other hand, you see better on TV!

DeleteIt is complicated to watch the US tennis - first it's only on a paying channel and then staying up most of the night.
There's also a third group - those of us in the middle, who watch some games if we feel like it - but do not sit glued to the screen, nor spend our time waiting for it all to end!

DeleteA writing professor came up with a creative writing project for his class! I think in the book Howards End one of the characters writes about a tree that is supposed to have pigs teeth embedded in it. We have forrest fires here, and are under a state of emergency, although no fire is near us the smoke drifts and has been very bad in the city this weekend, with air quality at the highest level, so Wimbledon has kept us entertained while we are inside. DeleteI read a terrific book called "The Hidden Life of Trees: the graphic adaptation" by Peter Wohlleben. Have I mentioned that to you before? It talks about the communication between trees and it is so well done with many interesting facts and nice illustrations. The author is a forester and I think of trees in a different way after reading his book.
