It Really Did Rain

There was plenty of rain yesterday morning to make up for the weeks without any. It came down hard early morning and the guttering was overflowing, maybe it was full of the moss washed off the roof. I'll need to get out with the step-ladder and gloves sometime to scoop out what I can reach.

It was a really good day for getting things done indoors and I turned cucumbers and onion into 3 jars of Bread and Butter pickle. A bit different to the Sweet and Sour Cucumber pickle already made. The first has sliced cucumber and onions and the Sweet and Sour has chunked cucumber and celery.

Then I blanched and froze a big bundle of French green beans and meanwhile the bread-maker was chugging away making a 50/50 wholemeal/white bread.

I like the Met Office website where you can see the rain clouds coming in from the west and then moving away.

I didn't get to see part one of the new Karen Pirie series on Sunday night as I was watching the golf highlights (suffering sport withdrawal symptoms from the end of tennis so watching The Tour and The Open Golf to make up!) So yesterday afternoon I watched the first part of K.P.. It only needed a quick look at part one of series one to remind me about it. I picked up one of the books from Needham Mkt library when I was out Sunday to see how I get on with it.
Why do  we have such short series over here? A series run of crime drama in the States could be 22 or more - here it's 6 if we're lucky. ITV have several other crime dramas returning this Autumn - seen the trails but can't remember what they were
In the evening the other third of quizzy Mondays was back which is good. Only Connect is my favourite of the three.

    1. I'm trying one of the later books in the series (Val McDermid). If they make it into a series later I'll have forgotten the story

  2. It is annoying that our TV series are so short, I wish we made much longer ones like you say, I guess money is behind those decisions. Grateful for the full return of quizzy Mondays too!

    1. Seems there is money to make lots of different series as Triggerpoint is back and Ridley(?) but not enough to make more than 6 of any one series which is odd

  3. I watched the first part of the Karen Pirie series last night with my daughter and son-in-law and we were all agreed it was excellent. Any chance of the recipe for your Bread and Butter cucumber pickle? I'm getting quite a few from the greenhouse this year.

    1. I didn't really follow a recipe, there are lots on line. Just sliced, salted overnight, rinsed, drained. Heated vinegar with some sugar and mustard seed . Packed hot jars with the veg and poured over hot vinegar/sugar mix.

  4. Bread and butter cucumber pickle sounds delicious; I second Cath in asking for the recipe! (I remember sandwich spread at picnic lunches, I wonder if that it still around?)

    1. I used to hate that sandwich spread at birthday parties in the 1960s - it was always on offer,- yuck

  5. Sometimes American series are so long that they lose the original concept, but I agree that British series could be longer.

    1. I agree, I watched the early series of NCIS which went on for years and years and then changed as main characters left

  6. We had virtually no rain despite the weather forecast. Slightly cooler today which I like and have got some overdue tasks completed with slightly more energy today. Catriona

    1. I think yesterdays rain did a lot of good, although grass is still brown. As usual it made a flood in a road in the village - three years this has been happening and still not fixed!

  7. Did you watch Patience? That just aired here and I was surprised it was only six episodes but I think there will be another season.

    1. Thank you ... I have been racking my brains trying to think of this series, I loved it. I did start watching the original 'Astrid' afterwards but stopped for some reason. They started filming season 2 in May, due for release early next year.

  8. I want to thank you for the KP recommendation, we hadn't even heard of the series but are now enjoying it.

  9. The rain is so welcomed after a dry spell. Everything is nicely refreshed. We are dry here and the grass has browned too.
I will look for the KP series in the US.

  10. We found Karen Pirie surprisingly good too. Looking forward to watching more.
We had very little rain here over the weekend. It drizzled on and off, barely putting anything into the water butts until Monday night when it was a bit more forceful. It's softened the ground up at least.

  11. I started watching series 1 of Karen Pirie and thought that I had seen it all before, but within 15 minutes I realised it was all new to me. I must have started watching the series but then stopped for whatever reason and then never gone back to it. Happily both seasons are available on ITVX so I can binge-watch. :-)

UK seasons are far too short of the good detective shows, but then the States take it to the extreme and what starts as a good idea turns very strange and more of a soap opera after 50 plus episodes.

  12. I think even in the states the number of episodes per TV season has diminished over the years. Back in the '60s they used to do something like 35 episodes a year. It was crazy.
