The Last Saturday in July

Thank you to everyone for comments on the post about Persephone Books that I didn't see until the next day as I must have turned off the lap top very early. It always seems too late to reply by then. Do people go back to day old posts to see if the blogger has replied to comments?

What a different week of weather. The huge heat went and instead humidity and rain moved in, there was  rain nearly every day at some time except yesterday and Thursday was a real dismal drizzley day.
It didn't matter as I was in the kitchen using up 3 courgettes that had become long thin marrows which made six jars of marrow, apricot and ginger jam and was glad I'd brought in the marrows from the garden and the jars from the storeroom the day before while it was still fine.

I'm very fed up with the mini plum tomatoes this year, they look lovely but the skins are so tough that eating them means being left with a mouthful of tomato skin- which is really horrible. If they were bigger it would be best to skin them but being less than an inch long that would be a very fiddly job. The giant 'Big Mama' plum tomatoes that I want to use for my red hot chutney are still stubbornly green. I remembered to get red wine vinegar so that's ready for later.
The wasps that ate my 4 pears are now on the figs, I'm having to pick the figs just as they soften before fully brown. So annoying. Just hope they don't move into the greenhouse after the tomatoes.

Also fed up that I got to a run of sixty in the NYT wordle then had a fail yesterday, there were just too many five letter words with  ? O ? E R. I tried LOVER, SOBER, JOKER and even ROWER but not the word that it was - a weird one - GOFER . Ho Hum, still on 98% wins over 868 played so not so bad. Now need to start a new run.

Another weekend with no plans, there doesn't seem to be much happening in any villages around about. Family are busy or away so guess I'll have to amuse myself again! You really do need to get used to doing things alone when widowed.

  1. I had the same problem with Wordle yesterday! We don't see many gofers in Woodbridge! Have you tried Thirdle, that's quite good, but my favourite is Bull - Bear, that's a numbers game.

    1. I looked at Thirdle, that looks doable but Bull-Bear - hadn't a clue! I'll stick to the numbers on Countdown and doing sudokus.

  2. I do go back and look at replies on some blogs, like Ang on Tracing Rainbows, but only if I know they always reply.
I do reply to comments, but I don't get many so it's not difficult! If I received dozens then it would become quite a task.

    1. I start off replying at the beginning of the day and then sort -of fade away later!

  3. Oh how true about doing things on your own. 20 years now and I dread nearly every day, so fed up of lack of company so I don’t bother anymore, stay in bed late and go to bed early. Still too hot in Dorset to do anything and wish we had your amount of rain. Sandra.

    1. Sorry you are finding lots of days are hard, I sometimes feel like that but that's where writing a blog saved me as I can go out and do something to make a blog post.

  4. I failed a wordle last week, and I was so cross with myself, I was having a good run too...

    1. I was getting close to my best ever run. Slang words shouldn't be allowed!

  5. I do go back and check if a blogger has replied to comments but it's not a problem if they haven't, life's busy!
We ran the gauntlet of wasps on our plums but I was determined to pick them. Very annoying. Luckily didn't get stung.

    1. I have good intentions with replying but it doesn't always happen.
I've been bitten by something overnight but no stings - thankfully

  6. Things seem to become very quiet once the school holidays start. Surely they can't ALL go away?

    1. There are a few things happening some other weekends coming up, but this weekend was blank

  7. I go back and check but am remiss over replying to comments left on my own blog. Mind that's due mostly to not being able to type very well with Parkinsons.
Given up with Wordle, too many failures because of picking the one wrong letter when any one of a number will fit.

    1. btw, have you tried a Mouli food mill on your thick skinned tomatoes?

    2. I don't think there would be much left if I put them through a mouli as some are only half an inch long and anyway don't have one anymore.

  8. I didn't get gofer either. I would count that as American slang, rather than a real word.

    1. Seems a lot of people didn't get gofer which makes me feel much better!

    2. An American here, and I didn't get it. An odd word, certainly.

  10. When I know a blogger responds to comments, I go back and check, out of politeness. Some people don't respond so I don't check there.

  11. Failed Wordle yesterday as I never gave gofer a thought! Well done on making jam in this hot weather. Catriona

    1. The jam had to be done to make use of the marrows and not too hot thankfully

  12. I got gofer at the fourth, but was cross because I did not think it was a proper word, must be though.

  13. I also go back and look for replies to comments., but I totally understand that there may not be replies on every post. Occasionally a blogger never replies to their readers comments and then I give up and just read without commenting - apologies if you didn't want so much detail!

  14. I'm very bad at replying to comments....sometimes I do for a day or two, but then it falls by the wayside again. I know it's rude and I do feel bad about it, if people make the effort to comment then it's only polite to reply. I do sometimes reply to several in a blog post. Must do better!

  15. Marrow, apricot and ginger is an interesting combination! Is it common or your own invention? I really like apricots in jam or baking. When my mother and I were in Holland in May, she was especially enamored of the apricot jam served on our ship so I found a local grocery store and carried home an excessively large pot of Dutch jam for her.

  16. It is very quiet around here too. Many people are taking their holiday before children return to school.
My cherry tomatoes are thick skinned and not very tasty as well. Previous tomato plants produced nothing due to blight. The current plant is blight resistant so no blight this year, lots of tomatoes but unfortunately tasteless.
I had no idea wasps could destroy fruit growing on the trees.

  17. i always check to see if there is a reply to my comment, although I know that some bloggers never reply and I might still read their blog. If someone never replies, I sometimes just don't bother to comment.

  18. My first job in high school in the late '60s was as a gofer! As in "go for this, go for that" - errands, xeroxing, mailing things. I moved on pretty quickly, but it was a great introduction to working with people. Of course as it happens I didn't have a chance to do Wordle yesterday so my experience didn't help at all!

  19. I can't believe it's the last Saturday in July! Yikes!
Hope you have a good weekend whatever you do.

  20. I try to respond to comments but sometimes a comment doesn't naturally inspire a response - and I will often go and see if there is a reply but it doesn't upset if there isn't (well, unless I am really in a funk, but I recognise that as a me problem). Enjoy a weekend free of care - I am currently in the sandwich generation and a fairly high-pressure job at the moment, so I can only dream of that.

  21. I didn't get the Wordle either. Gofer hardly seems like a real word to me :(
I hope your weekend is a pleasant one.
