If You Wait Long Enough............................

.................all books will turn up second-hand!

I've waited 22 years to find a copy of this that I could afford so it was a real treat.

I think someone from World of Books made a mistake and put the decimal point in the wrong place when entering the details of this onto the Amazon website because the next cheapest copy is £48 and there are some for sale for a ridiculous £150. This copy was £1.05 with £2.80 postage!

Patch in the Forest

West, Elizabeth
Eligible for return until 3 Mar 2023
£1.05

Very, very, strange and I had to check twice that it really was for sale for that price - and it really was.

A Patch in the Forest by Elizabeth West - author of Hovel in the Hills, this is the story of Alan and Elizabeth's life in the Forest of Dean several years after moving away from Wales.

I read it when it was first out in 2001 when a friend bought a copy but haven't seen it since, so it will be much enjoyed.

Back Tomorrow

  1. Hope it still has all its pages ! The same happened to me with World of books, though the price wasn't so high, it was about 20 on other sites, and less than 2 on WoB. And the book is spotless.

    1. It was a very lucky spot as I'd not searched for it for a while

  4. Well done. Maybe they hadn't checked what the market appears to be for this book. Enjoy your luck.

  5. Brilliant! I got my magnifying work lamp at a tenth of its real price due to a typo in the catalogue. When we rang to check, they let us have it at lower price, thanked us, and promptly corrected their error!

    1. Very lucky as I'd not looked to see how much it was since you wrote about it a while ago, when only expensive copies were around

  8. Great find. Well done. I had similar find on eBay. Book listed at £7.99, but should have been over £100. It was very smoky so think someone was clearing out a relative's house and had no idea of the value!

  9. I've been lucky sometimes too. I usually go for 2nd hand books via Amazon, and often trawl through titles I want to read to see if there are any bargains.

  11. Patience is indeed a virtue. I once managed to find a book that I'd been wanting for years also on Amazon. It wasn't an expensive book but an out of print one and I was lucky to find it.

    1. The best thing about Amazon (orAbe books) is finding good books long out of print

  12. I've done well with secondhand books in general, usually someone not in the book trade just selling unwanted gifts or decluttering and just wanting to unload. You did very well this time.

    1. That's why I like second-hand book sales as they tend to sell everything at one price usually cheap

  13. Yay ... well done, both on your purchase and for being so patient. They do say good things come to those who wait, and boy have you waited. I was almost tempted to sell my copy when I saw the prices they were going for, but I didn't ... and I won't.

    1. I bet the sale price through Ziffit etc is nowhere near the price to purchase! I shall have a look

    2. I looked and they will buy for £5.77 but I'm not selling to make a quick profit!

    3. I'm sure Ziffit would try to buy it at that price, but I wouldn't sell mine even for the Amazon asking price ... unless I fall on serious hard times. ;-)

  15. It's always so great to find a book like that. After reading your post about I Bought a Mountain I looked on MAZON (USA) and another book site and finally settled on a Kindle version from Amazon. I am enjoying it. Several different friends had sheep over the years though not under those conditions! I enjoy reading about what you are reading but am often disappointed as I can't find it in our library (Kansas) here in the US. Occasionally can get it from Amazon at a reasonable price.

    1. I sometimes see old US books mentioned - especially old fiction on the Furrowed Middlebrow blog - that are nowhere to be found online but we do seem to be able to get more recent US non-fiction here

  16. That's amazing! I love finding deals like this. I get many of my books via Thriftbooks for a better price. Not sure if that is availble in England.

  18. On the theme of 'if you wait long enough' , my Suffolk Libraries reservation for Ronald Blythes 'Next To nature', placed on 11/11/22 , is moving forward and I'm now number 3 of 70 on the list. Patience is indeed a virtue.
