Long Stitch is Growing Slowly

My long stitch picture is growing slowly. It's been taken to two WI Knit, Stitch and Yarn mornings and a little done at home.

It's easy stitching but no hurry to get it finished.......perhaps by Autumn to add it to my Autumn Shelf.

Although I'm not sure I'll be going to many more Knit & Stitch Group mornings as I'm in two minds about re-joining my nearest WI in April. After looking at the programme there are several things I wouldn't go to and perhaps 1 WI +  swimming +  exercise group + shopping +Charity Shop Hunting+ Car boot sales is enough going out.
In fact the more I hear/read about the way the world is going (Cro's blog, Ilonas blog, news on the radio and I don't even read any newspapers and rarely watch TV news) the more I feel like staying at home and not being part of it all!!

Back Tomorrow

  1. Please don’t retreat from the world. That’s how one gets old.

  2. I think that Anon makes a valid point - but you, Sue, are too wise to cut yourself off entirely and become a hermit. There's a "sweet point" somewhere between "retreating from all awareness of what's going on"(where solitude turns into loneliness) and "watching the 24 hour rolling news channel" (which is utterly depressing) I am confident you will find the right level of engagement. Swimming and boot fairs bring you much joy, after all!

  3. There is more than one way of looking at the world - there are a lot of good people and much kindness out there are well. That's a lovely picture you are stitching.

  4. I now listen to brief news bulletins on radio and scan headlines of stories online, on reputable news outlets, i.e. not the Daily Mail. When I am home I listen to BBC Radio 3. Their news bulletins are minimal. Otherwise, I go outside for part of the day. There is nature around to observe, even in the middle of the city I live in.

  5. What a lovely autumn picture that will make.
There is so much in this world that can depress us, and I feel we each have to find our own way of coping. I am fully aware of things that are happening, but choose to concentrate on the good that is still to be found in the world. It makes my life much more peaceful :)

  6. That's such a pretty design and lovely to work on. The less I hear about what is going on in the outside world the better! We will try and live our own lives as best we can without the mad ideas of some politicians.

  7. I think your balance of activities is good. Like me, we know to keep several things going to keep our minds alert but also know when to draw the line. I gave up tv and radio news bulletins and current affairs programmes at the time of Brexit in 2016 and have never gone back to them. I don't miss them one jot. When listening to the radio I just reach for the off button on the hour.

  8. I am with Anon on this. Reliance on the Daily Mail for news is not the way to go. As to other blogs some of them are quite amusing, others just annoying. I tend to dismiss anyone who thinks David Icke makes sense. If someone banged on about a reptilian alien species I tend to dismiss what they say about other subjects. I also get a bit annoyed when people bemoan the situation the Uk is in and blames it on “the socialists”…hasn’t there been a Conservative government for the last 12 years.

    Love your blog

I agree with many of the sentiments here. I do read newspapers and listen and watch the news, as I like to know what is going on in the world. I think Angela has hit the nail on the head and I agree with Traveller. One of the blogs you mentioned gets more and more bizarre each day.

Not sure if you read Going Gently but that is a blog that seems to hit the right balance I think.

  10. Oh, Sue, that is going to be really pretty when it's finished.
I often go for days without watching the news. Depressing isn't the word for it. I think we all need to consider doing what works best for our own well being. I'll stick to sitting at my little table and doing my art. Deb in Wales.

  11. I never watch TV news either or take a paper anymore. Until Covid we used to have the Guardian delivered every day. I find out all I need to know on Radio 3’s two-minute updates at 8am, 1pm and 6pm. I don’t watch much TV although I have a fancy to watch Countdown again. I used to tune-in with my children after school with a cup of tea and marmite toast. You haven’t mentioned your cycling as an outing. It’s dried up here so much lately that the bridleways are now passable. Can your bike go off-road? Sarah in Sussex

  12. Know what you mean about going about Sue but my philosophy is I may not have long left in this world (and don't believe in any 'next' so I shut my mind to the bad things and soldier on.

  13. Don't stop going out Sue as I know only too well that being a recluse is boring and wouldn't suit you at all. I read both their posts yesterday and neither of them would stop me going out. What I am more fearful about is technology and the effect it is having now, but that is just me, someone who is termed as a dinosaur which doesn't bother me in the slightest. If you stop going out who is going to tell us about the churches in Suffolk?

  14. I haven't seen someone to long stitching in years and I love it. I got out to work 4 days a week and when I get home I have no interest in being any where else. I have to force myself to go out of the house on my days off. I do not want that to become who I am qhen I retire this june. Stay engaged I know I will have to do better.

    1. Ain’t that the truth. Completely bonkers of late and increasingly racist.

      Love the long stitch Sue

    2. I have given it up as well. There is no reasonable discourse allowed. She states her opinion and you either agree or you're labeled a troll. There is no value in having someone throwing their opinions at you and becoming belligerant when you disagree.

    3. I confess to still reading it. I find it interesting to see how someone can go down a rabbit hole and start believing all sorts of conspiracy theories on the basis they can see the truth and others who follow facts are sheeple. I. Won’t say more as I have already stepped over the mark on Sue’s calm sensible and adult blog.

      You rock Sue!

  16. I know what you mean about wanting to retreat indoors, but I think you have enough quality places to go to and be sociable, and of course family, to keep you sane.

I find I can only watch the teatime news programmes now, if I watch the morning ones I find that I am feeling down all day, and if I watch the evening ones ... well who wants to go to bed feeling depressed when there is absolutely nothing you can do to help.

Like most things in life it's a balance what we do and what we take in, a fine line that we have to choose for ourselves.

  17. A nice balance of views in your comments section. I watched the panorama program on Ukraine last night and it was heartbreaking and distressing. I told myself off for when I'm ever ungrateful for our easier life.

  18. I get a couple of newspapers in my email each day and can glance through to see what is going on. Things have gotten goofy but scary over here in US but I try to focus on the positive and ignore the crazies.
You have a good balance of activities and quiet time. I love your stitching and think it will be so pretty when you finish.

  19. I follow the news just to be updated, not to dwell and get depressed. My way is to do the best I can for the people in my life, including writing blog posts that are interesting and not rage filled! Among all the suffering, there's still plenty of joy if you look for it.

I come to this blog because it's calm, peaceful, grown up!

  20. That's going to be beautiful when it's finished, you are very talented. I know what you mean about the world at present. I force myself to go out, I'm glad I did today, the appearance of little hedgerow flowers, bird song and sun put a smile on my face. Coming across like minded folk who stopped for a quick natter was good for the soul. Stay connected with people but start with small outings. None of us want to be overwhelmed.

  21. I am of the mind: Do what you enjoy and if it is not pleasurable skip it. The news is dreadful everywhere. US recently had a train derail in Ohio and spew highly toxic materials in a community. People being exposed is just terrible.

  22. Your long stitch picture is beautiful. Is it difficult? I would guess the stitches need to be done carefully.

  23. Your long stitch picture is just gorgeous. We call that a type of needlepoint here in Canada.

I sometimes want to hide in my house as well.

    God bless.

  24. Really beautiful! That's the problem with stitching - I can never get it done quickly enough. I don't think people realise just how long it takes to work on a picture. It is worth it in the end.
