V.R.E. Day 6

A brief Sunday post with a plate of food! (I never wanted to be a food blogger - what's the matter with me for goodness sake!)

Day 6 main meal. The 4th and final piece of quiche with tinned potatoes (as I've got to the end of the fresh because of using them in the fish curry, twice roast with the quiche and mashed which are in the freezer) and tinned tomatoes.

These Morrisons Basic Value Range tinned spuds were actually OK, better than I remember when we used to use them on family camping holidays.

Have had Rainbow Tulips from Aldi as my 'Flowers on the Table' this week

  2. Wow, that's a big meal. Is that your normal plate full or was it just for the camera illustration?

    1. Quarter of the quiche, three squishy tinned tomatoes and several small spuds. My main meal of the day.

    1. I agree, tinned potatoes roasted or air fried taste great.

    2. We used to use them a lot when we camped with the children - we couldn't afford for 5 to eat out so always cooked on a little camp stove and they were so quick.

  4. I couldn't eat that much in one meal. I used to divide a quiche into four, now I make five or six portions out of it.

  5. Congratulations on making relatively little go a long way. What's next, I wonder?

  6. Your main meal looks normal to me - I suppose how much one eats depends on how active one is. Interesting to hear about your blueberry experience. I think I’ll stick with red gooseberries, autumn raspberries, white currants, cherries, strawberries and rhubarb - all growing in the ground in the fruit cage. After planting up the pots yesterday and as the soil was damp I moved some baby hellebore seedlings to the woodland behind the deer fence and had some vigorous exercise pulling out yards of bramble and ivy and nettle roots which left behind crumbly soil to poke the sturdy hellebore roots into. I wind the lengths of ivy and nettle roots into rough balls and poke them into wood piles to make habitats. To my mind there is no such thing as green waste! It was lovely be in the garden in wintry sunshine and we had our morning coffee sitting in the warm greenhouse. Have a lovely Sunday Sue - it looks cold and grey outside today. Sarah in Sussex

  8. I think it is fascinating this discussion of meals and thriftiness. I am thrifty but my family are not, not sure how I can change that!

  9. We always had tins of potatoes when we caravanned/motorhomed as they were easy to pop in the Remoska or chop into casseroles. During the pandemic they were really handy when we couldn’t shop as needed and the habit has stuck. I couldn’t get any for weeks in my online shopping until the delivery driver told me that they are a great success in the airfryer and were selling out fast. This week I got the two tins I had ordered so guess the novelty is wearing off. Batch cooking day today and then some housework. Catriona

  10. I quite often make a quiche as its cheap and if I make it veggie we can all have the same. I love tinned potatoes in the air fryer, and like you, we use them when camping as easy.

  11. It looks absolutely delicious and very healthy too.
    The tulips are gorgeous. xx

  12. Tinned potatoes can certainly be very useful - good tips above about using the air fryer to roast them.
    Very pretty tulips x

  13. Quiche always makes a great meal. My egg meal last week was not as well planned and prepared. I do not like to cook. I scrambled 4 eggs with chopped onion and green peppers. Some salt, pepper and garlic was added as well. Toast and honey with tea completed the meal. Your tulips look very pretty. Signs of Spring are always welcomed.

  14. Now I'm hungry...you are doing well with the experiment and I love seeing what you are preparing. Gives me ideas for the weekly meal planning.

  16. I've never come across tinned potatoes - next time I visit the supermarket I will have to see if they stock them.

  17. I've seen canned potatoes but never used them. Your main meal is about like mine in size. I really like a bit of food blogging now and then. You have a lot of variety in your posts though, no danger of being a one topic blogger.

  18. I think you did well I would have skipped the potatoes but that is just me.
What a glorious bunch of tulips.

  19. Your experiment is going well. I know we have packages of dried potato flakes, but not sure if we have tinned. Must look the next time I am shopping as I think they would be great to have on hand if one runs out.

    God bless.

  20. I would also skip the potatoes as the pastry crust is enough carbs for me. I like pickled beets with my quiche. The tulips are gorgeous!

  21. I had a thing for those tinned potatoes once. Not sure why lol. The flowers are beautiful

  22. There's nothing wrong with being a food blogger occasionally. ;-)

I like tinned potatoes in curries as they tend not to break apart and vanish the way fresh potatoes do. I think the thing to remember is to rinse them before using, to get rid of the water that they have been sat in for so long.
