Yippee - First Saturday in March

Why Yippee? because the car-boot season starts today. Early morning weekend walks with a purpose again.
Although when I said the same thing this time last year it rained! And I was thwarted.
But if car boot sales are rained off  I know about 2 jumble sales today that could be visited instead.

In Suffolk this week........................

  • This popped up somewhere on-line in Big Letters.                                                       Morrisons announces major change for customers everywhere.
"Wonder what that could be" I thought, - are they closing stores? Opening more? That would be a major change. When I read on I found out what the "major change" was. Can you guess? Answer at bottom of the page.
  • Season 19 of NCIS on TV here at last. It started last Monday at the same time as a new series of Unforgotten - which I watched on ITV catch up later, I shall enjoy the last few appearances of  Mark Harmon.
  • Managed to get son and Brother in Law here at the same time to shift my chest freezer from garage at front of house to the new store room at back of house - 100% better.
  • Swimming and exercise group were both good.
  • Ken Bruce has finished on Radio 2 - very sad. Vernon Kay taking over the programme- Oh dear. BBC want all their Radio 2 listeners to be under 45! They'll lose me then.
  • Some lovely sunshine here on Thursday, quite warm through glass- to make everyone think spring was on the way- as long as you didn't go outside.
  • Very excited to find I am now an "Influencer "!  Just hope the people who buy the Norman Thelwell book after my post, enjoy reading it.
  • Why do I only spot Deer in a field when I'm driving and can't stop for a photo.
  • The rhubarb plant that was here when I moved in died off last year and the one I brought here and shoved in the only place I could find for it at the time is looking so sad. Aldi had some plants in quite big pots. I bought two. I'm determined to have rhubarb!
  • The mysterious appearance of a patch of crocuses and miniature tulips has surprised me. Pity they are tucked away behind the greenhouse. Were they there last year - that is the question.

  • 2nd March 2023

After a bit of searching old blogs I found they were, photographed on 12th March last year when I was  surprised to see them for the first time.

12th March 2022

I'll be back Monday with the Great Value Range Experiment.
Yes, I'm joining in with all the bloggers who post pictures of shopping and meals!! (But only for a few weeks.)

Have a lovely weekend - stay warm - 4℃ forecast for the boot sale!
Sue

The major change at Morrisons?.......their bananas are no longer going to be in a plastic bag but instead will just have a paper band around them. Good news obviously warranting   LARGE BOLD LETTERING!?

  1. Would somebody local divide their crown in the autumn? I'm sure being a thrifty gal you've thought of that, but maybe a locally grown one would be happier. Although the one you had died. Odd that, they are usually pretty amenable to whatever comes.

    1. I thought rhubarb would survive anything but think the one I brought was planted in a draughty place. The two new will be put in a better place with more light and sun

  2. I thought my rhubarb had died, but it has somehow revived and produced fresh shoots. I'm glad I didn't root it out now, when it was brown and shrivelled.

    1. I'm annoyed with myself for putting the plant in a place that was too draughty and in too much shade

  3. Enjoy the car boot/s and jumble sales. I am going to make sure I get rid of some of my stuff at our nearest Car Boot Sale at Clyro each month - so long as it doesn't clash with Malvern Flea every month.

  4. Sadly I am turning away from radio 2 as well, what does Vernon Kay know about music, DJ's are very different these days, Ken is so knowledgeable, might search out his new station, will have to put up with the ads. Rhubarb, ours's died, might have to try again.

  6. When we moved from our old house, almost 2 years ago now, we dug up our rhubarb to give to a friend. He has now divided one of them to give back to us for our new garden. It went in yesterday so we are hoping it survives.

  7. Happy to see NCIS back on our screens too. I have been getting so annoyed with many American friends on Facebook. I am not allowed to breathe a single word about Call the Midwife or Downton Abbey. However, they have been spilling spoilers on NCIS for months. So unfair! Afraid I began playing dirty and started "spoiling" back.

  8. They've ruined Radio 2 in their pursuit of a non-existent youth market. First Simon Mayo, then Steve Wright and now Ken. I don't listen at all now. My sister has switched to Greatest Hits (where Ken is going) and likes it, apart from the advertisements. I'll stick with Classic.

  12. Rhubarb seems to be very affected by location and soil which surprises me. Last house we grew dozens of large thick sticks; this house they are really struggling and this is after 20 years and a very well fed rhubarb patch.

    1. It's varied in different houses for me too but I've never lost 2 clumps in two years before

  13. Judging by comments radio 2 are losing listeners with their must appeal to younger audiences attitude - we won't be listening to VK, perhaps we'll seek out the commercial station that Ken Bruce is going to
The Morrisons announcement seemed a bit OTT didn't it - do they want a medal?!

    2. 10 till 1 daily starting 1st April. You should find the station on non- digital radios.

  14. Here in the States bananas are not wrapped in anything. They are displayed in bunches of various sizes in elevated rows, which allows one to pick and choose as many or as few as one wants. One can pull loose one or two if that is all is wanted, and they are sold by the pound.

    1. Often bananas are displayed the same way here as you say, but sometimes in plastic bags for some reason - to avoid excess handling I think

  15. Okay I admit it, I scanned to the bottom of the page straight away to see what the BIG change at Morrisons was going to be ... talk about a let down, I'm glad I wasn't holding my breath!!

Alan is currently doing an NCIS marathon binge watch, every evening all evening. While I watched all of the new series of Unforgotten over two nights. I think the 'new girl' will settle in well once we get over losing Nicola Walker, she's a fantastic actress and obviously a hard act to follow.

  18. I am amazed at the great buys you find at car boot and jumble sales. Given this is the start of the sales, there should be a lot on offer. Morrison's announcement on bananas is quite funny. What will they do when they have really big news? It is snowing in Massachusetts and is predicted continue most of the day. My first rhubarb planted on the west side of the property did not survive but the second one on the East side grew to a modest size last year. Today, everything is under 4-5 inches of snow, the white is pretty but I'd rather see crocus, tulips and snowdrops.

  19. WE are in the middle of a blizzard so no sales here and no sign of plants peeking above the dirt. Our grocery store started putting bananas in plastic bags and boy do I hate that. I only want a couple at a time. and what a waste with the bags.

  22. hubby and I have left Radio 2 and found Boom Radio (available online) and have rediscovered David Hamilton and Judy Spiers with their radio programmes. Lovely to hear some music we haven't heard for years.

unfortunately we seem to have lost our last snowdrops from our garden this year. such a shame as they were given to us from a schoolfriend's mother from her garden.

  26. Whenever you or Jennie from Codlins and Cream write about car boot sales I always think I’m missing a trick by not going to the Thursday or Sunday car boot sale at Ford airfield. One day … Best thing about bananas is that they don’t need any wrapping, but their environmental cost is huge as they are transported in temperature-controlled containers so for that reason I only buy them occasionally in the winter months as I also prefer local apples and pears of which there are still plenty around. Hope your Aldi rhubarb takes. You must not pick any this year, but give it a good year to develop its roots - remember when it comes to perennials like rhubarb and asparagus that shoots make roots, and give it a deep mulch with your best kitchen waste compost. Here ends today’s lesson! We’re garden visiting this afternoon, a beautiful spring garden around a 17th century house and a two acre walled garden which used to be run productively on commercial lines by the previous owner (a Miss Mitford) until she died and her nephew inherited. It will be interesting to see what’s growing today. The soil as you can imagine is to die for and I am keeping my fingers crossed there might be some forced rhubarb for sale. Sarah in Sussex

    1. I only really like banana in a sandwich or in a fruit salad so rarely buy them - English apples are still around but I think it's the last of the pears. Then I'll probably be eating canned fruit - this is when I wish the rhubarb had survived.
The clump I brought here in a bucket when I moved in - nearly 2 years ago now- was looking very good last year and I only ate a little that was overlapping the gooseberry bush, hoping it would spread but instead it has shrunk! No room for asparagus here - sadly, I grew it for years at the smallholding.

    2. I have 10 crowns growing in a 5m x 75cm space which I planted as one-year-old crowns in April 2019. I bought them direct from a grower in Suffolk (£1 a crown) and spent the year before improving the soil by turning over the grass and covering the upside down turves with a thick layer of homemade compost. I had a big asparagus patch of 30 crowns at the allotment (planted in 2002 and 2003) and used to give lots away to special friends. 10 crowns for the two of us and occasional friends for supper is the perfect amount I hope. This will be the first time here that I will cut for the six full weeks. Are you sure that you can’t lose some grass and have five crowns just for you? The ferns as you know make a fantastic living screen until the November gales arrive.

  27. I've got news for Morrisons . . . for months now Sainsbury's have been selling bananas held together with a sticky paper band that defeats anyone trying to take a banana or two from a bunch, because the paper can't be torn; it needs scissors to cut it open!
