It's been ages since I walked up the "Quiet Lane" that loops round the village.
. Actually it's been ages since I went for a walk at all. Exercise group and swimming seem to have taken over from walking....except around car boot sales!
It's wheat growing on all the fields up the lane this year - on both sides
But those men and machines working on the field in the distance of that second photo are doing something in preparation for a brand new housing estate on the edge of the village. I think about 75 new homes are planned.

Half a mile further up the lane is well away from any new houses
Zooming in to the edge of the village and the church tower behind the huge lime trees that edge the grave yard.
It was sunny but windy and not a lot of birds or wildlife to be seen except for a Buzzard soaring and calling. Then finally a Meadow brown (corrected to say it's a Gatekeeper Butterfly! Thank you to Annabeth in the comments, ) sat still long enough for a photo.

Your walk looks lovely and flat. I’m finding hills increasingly difficult and it is nothing but inclines and hills here in Dorset. You’re right about signs of Autumn, I’ve already tasted a few Blackberries, loads to come, lots of Hazel nuts forming, sloes and elderberries. Building in villages seems to be countrywide, huge estates going up in all the villages along the A350 and Shaftesbury has so many new houses, how will the infrastructure cope. Sandra.

It's a shame about the house building taking yet more agricultural land out of production and overloading villages with developments totally out of keeping with the area and infrastructure. We have the same problems here in the North East, what were separate villages are now just one continuous mass of housing without the necessary supporting infrastructure of shops, GP surgeries, schools etc.
ReplyDeleteSpeculative building is going on all over the country, with no thought given to infrastructure. Building companies promise schools, surgeries, community hubs, wildlife areas but always seem to 'run out of money'. The new houses are often shoddily built and seem to be put up for sale not long after being occupied. This green and pleasant land is being covered in concrete.
ReplyDeleteThe builders have just pulled out of a new development in our village. The last few houses built are not selling, so they aren't starting the remaining ones. I don't fully understand the regulations, but I think this excuses them from putting certain infrastructures in place to benefit the community (this all sounds very dodgy to me)

DeleteNo thought has ever been given to infrastructure. Water and sewage companies are just expected to cope and that's without the things people notice like doctors and schools and dentists. Your quiet lane is like mine.

ReplyDeleteThe lanes around our village are mostly through wooded areas which, regretfully, I will never be able to walk down. Still, my imagination works overtime and I can wander down those lanes in my mind. It's a shame about the building work going on, many villages are no longer small enough to be called a village due to the many new houses being added in, this village is the same. I don't know where this year has gone, it seems to have passed me by..

ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have a designated quiet lane to walk. For now,anyway. I always wonder with new development where will they commute to work? Traffic? New students adding to school population?
ReplyDeleteSo nice to see the wheat fields, reminds me of when I lived in Dorset and Wiltshire - here in west Wales, at least our bit anyway, it's all spuds and cattle maize ! The new housing? Some would call it progress I suppose.......

The golden color of the wheat field is truly beautiful. I love your open space and long views. Like your Hawthorne trees, our Oak trees are showing signs of Fall. Unbelievably, the Oaks are releasing tiny acorns. I've never seen acorns so small. 75 new homes indicates a housing need. We also have housing shortages. Some say, large empty office buildings in Boston, MA will eventually convert to housing. The buildings are currently under lease, but empty because people are working from home. Existing home sales are in decline due to mortgage rate increases and high home prices.

ReplyDeleteOur island is fast disappearing beneath acres of new housing but the hospital, doctors surgeries, schools and other services are already creaking at the seams. I don't know how we will cope with so many new residents.
What a nice idea to have a quiet place to walk. I cannot really comment on the housing...i know that here, affordable housing is badly needed.

I love that Quiet sign! They need one of those at our nature park. Sometimes people (adults) just seem to have to shout at one another to talk! I love the clouds in the photos. Nothing is better than a good puffy cloud for a landscape photo!
