Advent 2024 and Christmas Eve

What to write about today?

Part of  the population (Women!) are rushing around getting all the things that are on the 'to do' list crossed off, that's after going out for last minute food shopping by 8am.

Another part of the population (Men!) are wondering if what they have bought for presents - that's if they've actually got  around to buying presents - is going to be the right thing?

And the small children are so hyped up that there will be "tears before bedtime" for sure

And the teenagers are still in bed - and probably will be for most of the day!

***********************

I thought I'd find some you tube Christmas things to watch when everything on the list has been done.

The Wartime Farm Christmas 1944

Here's a short clip from the Christmas edition of The Good Life from 1977

The whole episode is funny but I couldn't get it to copy to here.

And from the beautiful Bealtaine Cottage in Ireland

Have a good nights sleep and don't forget to feed Father Christmas!

Back Tomorrow - briefly
Sue

and a PS - I heard big machinery and looked out the front door and zoomed in for this photo of the giant sugar beet harvester gathering in the sugar beet from up the lane where I walk for the oak photos. It was working in the rain but still got the whole field done in less than day.

  1. Happy Christmas Eve, Sue! The Good Life clip made me chuckle. They don't make shows like that any more. I'm really not feeling any excitement about the Gavin and Stacey finale.
Bealtaine Cottage is so lovely, and has a real gentleness to it. A very enjoyable watch.
Thankfully, there's not so much rushing around for me today. I'm off out for brunch with the girls. Xx

  3. I must admit to having left a bit to do today!
Also, I wanted to thank you for the pleasure I’ve got from reading your blog daily. Have read for a number of years but never commented before this one. You put in so much work to it and to answering comments.
You say sometimes that you struggle for topics but I always find it interesting and perhaps I’m nosy, but I enjoy reading about what you’re growing and your current books and tv programmes. Today I’ve been off googling sugar beet!
I hope that you have a lovely few days over Christmas and best wishes for 2025. J’nan

  7. Hello Sue, Christmas Eve is coming to a close. Nearly bedtime so I’ll just say Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. Tomorrow will be here in a few hours - we have a 30° day to look forward to so it’ll be cold meats and salads on the table. Love to you and your family. Cathy in Melbourne

  9. It is Christmas eve here, very early in the morning. I am wide awake. We are only working on the rehab for half a day. The rest of the day will be spent putting together the strata for breakfast, delivering a few gifts, and simmering the ham off the bone for our potato soup for lunch for Christmas lunch. Merry Christmas, Sue.

  10. Some great YouTube videos there, and it reminds me it must be at least three years since I watched the Christmas edition of The Good Life. I have however already watched two versions of Scrooge up to now. Yesterday was the colourised version of the 1951 Alistair Sim one.

Those harvesting machines are huge aren't they, and after watching a couple of episode of Wartime Farm and their farm equipment, they look even more so.

    1. They've been loading the beet onto lorries all day today and trucking it off to the factory - it's non stop until all the beet is done.

  14. I laughed at your words - and read them to my husband and he laughed, too. I was out at 7:30 picking up the last few things I'd forgotten at the grocery store. And he says there's one more store he needs to visit, but won't tell me why.
A Merry Christmas to you, Sue.

  15. Those poor women! I was in bed till 8:30 when Farmbeau woke me, coffee freshly brewed; and I've sat reading in my housecoat for the next 4 hours, expecting no company and having no firm plans for the Big Day but taking a ham roast from the deep freeze and making scallopped potatoes to go with it. We aren't in a celebratory mood, having lost his younger sister to cancer yesterday, and he has a nasty cold/flu thing happening, but of course we must eat and try to make it a pleasant day for my son, Emil, who is with us this week so that staff from the group home where he lives can have a few days off
for Xmas. Peace and quiet, no jingly bells for us, but appreciating loved ones still with us and grateful for the time we had with his sister and with my dad, who died in November. It won't be a "merry" Christmas but we have many comforts to appreciate, and we do. It's good to know, too, that many others are having happy times like we've had in the past and will again. All the best to you!!

  16. Happy Christmas Sue.
Christmas would not be Christmas without the typical hustle and bustle. I went to a grocery store yesterday for 3 things and it was busy. People were losing their carriages! Store announcements stated: make sure you have your own carriage and if you do not, bring it to customer service. This announcement was made multiple times. Christmas madness.

  17. I'm old enough to remember receiving an orange at Christmas, proper lighted candles clipped onto a tree, (my mother was very vigilant with them) one or two inexpensive toys, until I got a bike when I was about 15, and chicken was a once a year treat. The videos are beautifully nostalgic. I LOVED The Good Life. Merry Christmas Sue🎄
