Thanks to everyone for comments yesterday. It was a sudden decision in the end but I know it's the right one which wouldn't have been the case a year ago.
I was going through my few CDs and DVDs (to see if Ziffit would take any) which live in 2 of the 4 drawers of the chest of drawers/coffee table that the TV sits on and from the other 2 drawers I pulled out this wonderful collection of cables and electronic bits.
No idea what most of them are for - except the charger for my old camera, so don't know if I should keep them or not.
What a tangle .............I'll probably just shove them all back in the drawers!
And the DVD's and CD's? ........well I only have about 2 dozen of each and Ziffit would only take 1 DVD and 3 CD's, so I won't get rich from that sort out.
Back Tomorrow
Sue
We have a pile of cables in our cupboard under the TV to lol
ReplyDeleteI didn't realise there were so many
DeleteI had a lot cables. I shoved them in the dustbin one day. Never missed any of them.
ReplyDeleteSome are to do with the old TV which I might want to use but not sure which
DeleteAre you storing an old tv set too? Tut tut.
DeleteLike Rachel, I keep cables for years and then end up chucking them.
ReplyDeleteIn a way it's not a sudden decision - you've mentioned moving several times over the past year or so so it's been on your mind, working out, hasn't it?
xx
Thats true. I've always known I won't stay forever and the things I've had done have added value for selling
DeleteI'd bin them too. If you haven't used them or looked for them and have no idea what they are for anyway, then you don't need them. That's the way I sort things out!
ReplyDeleteThe minute I chuck anything it's sure to be what I need a day later
DeleteI strongly suspect that the cables are breeding. If you leave just two in a warm dark place for six months, you will come back a year later and find a nest of about 17.
ReplyDeleteYes I think you are right
DeleteLol,Angela that did make me laugh!.I agree, over the years I have got 3 boxes of them and I havent got a clue what they are for,xx
DeleteIf you don't know what they're for - bin them. Many cords/cables can be used for other things, so chances are you only need a couple of them anyway. Good luck on your house move. I hope it happens quickly for you and you can start your new adventure! xx
ReplyDeleteI can't move too quickly as the houses where I want to go aren't built yet!
Deleteeveryone seems on the move, seen a few bloggers say there on the move and people on social media, this week I have new neighbors moving in, I do wonder if all the unrest this year is a big factor, good luck with your move
ReplyDeleteIt's a good time as houses prices are up and stamp duty stopped until March
DeleteI have mine all tied up tidily in a box file. They are the sort of thing you think you'll never need again, but once they're gone, that's when you discover you need one.
ReplyDeleteExactly!
DeleteI would keep them until after your move, I have a drawer of leads, which we always keep and every now and then we pull one out, happy to still have it.
ReplyDeleteCol would have probably known what they were but I only know some
DeleteWe moved house 2 years ago and had a huge packing box *full* of cables because hubby thought we needed to keep them "just in case". Well, we've needed a few cables over our 2 years here. Were there any in that box that were the right kind? No! I tell him repeatedly to toss them but he just smiles and says he's keeping them for now. Just in case. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI've also got a small box full of keys that are mostly a mystery!
DeleteI've got a tangle of those in the master bedroom. Probably tv orientated in my case but any use? Dunno!
ReplyDeleteI thought I was the only one who had leads etc, they are in a basket above the freezer and I expect they will stay until I pass on. I have a kitchen drawer that has all little bits and pieces in it, but it is handy to put them in one place, a bit like the man that has a workshop.

Our Council tell us not to put small electricals in the general waste bin, and I class these as small electricals. We can bag them up and leave them out for collection with the glass and tin box. They go into the recycling at the depot.
ReplyDeleteThat is one of the things that puts me off moving - the thought of having to sort out all those drawers full of oddments like that.
ReplyDeleteI would just go through all the cables carefully any you know you definintely don't need could go in a bag and be placed on top of one of your recycling bins. Any you are in even a smidge of doubt about roll up and put in a box ready to take with you when you go 'JUST IN CASE'.
ReplyDeleteThe one time we were ruthless and just chucked the lot away we literally realised a week later that we had thrown away a set of DVD to TV connecting cables for an older DVD player that we decided to start using again, and had to go out and buy some more!!
EVERY HOUSE has a drawer like that Sue, I know my son in law has at least 3 ;o) Everything that belongs to me electronically is wrapped in an elastic band.
ReplyDeletebaby boomers are going to get abused and treated like garbage in the retirement homes. Maybe you boomers shouldn't have been so selfish and arrogant and greedy. Literally everyone hates baby boomers now. Enjoy those retirement homes, and good luck, boomers!
ReplyDeleteWind them up neatly and donate to a thrift shop or rummage sale. At first one thinks, Oh toss them all in the bin...but I was thrilled to find a replacement cord for my postal scale at the church flea market. There they just offer a tub of random cords.
ReplyDeleteThe one on top that goes off to the right hand side is a SCART splitter to connect multiple devices to a TV or video recorder.
ReplyDeleteDon't think I've ever commented on your blog before, but have read all entries through from the beginning, even read your old blog as well. I find your writing interesting, and wish you well on this exciting new plan.
ReplyDeleteIf I were in your position, I'd sort those cords and cables out, then keep them in a box until after I was in my new place with everything set up. Then, and only then, would I discard them.
Just my humble opinion!
That made me laugh! I moved with a large box full of technical stuff like that without any idea what they were for. Son went through them a few months ago and dismissed the lot as they were mostly obsolete or belonged to equipment we don't even possess any more. Pure junk!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I sell up here I plan to rent - easier for family to dispose of when I go!
ReplyDeleteOh, so “me too”! My collection of old cords has gone in the bin. I showed them to a serviceman and he took any he thought might be useful and the rest went out. I now keep control be labeling, with one of those machines that writes on sticky plastic tape, every cord, and just to prove I’m really tragic, I have done the same to all our car keys. With two cars with identical looking keys it seemed like a good idea. It also ‘proves’ which of us has misplaced their key!!
ReplyDeleteSue talk about coincidence I did exactly the same thing today! I now have a similar pile to you on my lounge floor but I have decided to bin them. I don't remember going in that drawer for months so hey ho off they go x
ReplyDeleteThank you for the recommendation of Copsford. I bought it for my husband and he loved it. My turn to read it next. Jan Bx.
ReplyDeleteA move, a new start, a new challenge
ReplyDeleteWhatever
Good luck xxxx
My computer nerd of a son would say if any are HDMI cables...keep them as they are very expensive to replace.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I have a drawer of them. I'm too afraid to let go of them 'just in case' they are for something important lol.
ReplyDeleteI had a shopping bag full of them. I finally threw them out. But I really struggled with myself. There was a voice screaming that as soon as I pitched them, I would figure out what they went to. It took a lot to ignore that.
