1. It was after 10pm on New Years Eve when I discovered a pool of water in front of my small kitchen freezer - aaaagh! It had somehow got turned off at the wall switch and must have been off for a few days as the little drawer at the bottom was full of water. It has no internal light and no external light to show when it's on, so easily missed it being off. I lost some bacon, chicken breasts, ice cream and several other things. Kept the butter/baking marge which should be OK refrozen. Nothing much to be done about it except switch back on, dump the very soggy stuff in the sink, throw towels all around the bottom of the freezer and go to bed!
2. Drew back the curtains on the patio doors on New Years Morning and saw several pots on the ground, spilling out their contents in front of my plant stand, the plant stand top shelf was all on the huh and the whole thing appeared to be leaning despite being fixed to the trellis.
3. And that's when I noticed the trellis was also leaning at an odd angle, so I went out to have a look - discovered the post was rotten and had given way, pushing over the plant stand, breaking the shelf and two of the pots. Nothing to be done except for detaching the plant stand from the trellis, detaching the trellis from the broken post. Laying everything down, putting the contents back in their pots and waiting for better weather to sort it all out.
Ho-Hum - no use crying over lost bacon and broken plant stand!
Well, you got those threes sorted out in pretty short order. Very efficient, Sue~
ReplyDeleteAll things annoying but no point worrying
DeleteCan only get better from there 😊
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought but.............
DeleteSorry about the losses and damage but love that old Suffolk expression you included. xx
ReplyDeleteI didn't even know it was Suffolk Dialect until I got a book of Suffolk words as it's so commonly used
DeleteI noticed that word too, my late husband used to use it. I, coming from Yorkshire had no idea what he was talking about the first time he said it! 😄
ReplyDeleteIt's well used in Suffolk even now
DeleteNot a great start to the year but not a disaster either.
ReplyDeleteJust a list of things to replace - sometime
DeleteOh no! What a waste, and such a messy job cleaning up the freezer. Midwinter isn’t the ideal time to be faffing around fixing the fence, but in Spring you’ll be able to have a lovely time planning the resurrected garden.
ReplyDeleteSorry, that Anonymous is Virginia, wishing for a much better rest of January!
DeleteI'll have to sort out some replacements I guess
DeleteOh no, how awful. They say things do happen in threes, so hopefully you have now had your three :)
ReplyDeleteHopefully the rest of the month will be without problems but who knows
DeleteHopefully that's all the unluckiness over with now for the rest of this year!
ReplyDeleteHope so. Although I'm waiting for my Hoover to go wrong next!
DeleteAt least you have had your three, we are changing all our wooden post for concrete ones, that's when our horrible neighbour lets us get work done.
ReplyDeleteConcrete sounds like a plan
DeleteIt is so frustrating when any food has to be discarded. Soggy, damp freezer food especially (and finding it late at night is horrid) I hope all is straight again soon in kitchen and garden. BTW do you ever shop at Iceland? Their 10%Tuesday Discount for OAPS is very useful!
ReplyDeleteDon't have Iceland anywhere around here, nearest is too far for making a saving
DeleteMy Mum used to say that bad things always happened in three's ... it's bloody annoying isn't it. I think I would have cooked the bacon and chicken and then refrozen them that way rather than throwing them out, but there's no rescuing thawed out ice-cream is there ... it's horrible stuff once it melts.
ReplyDeleteThe meat was altogether in the little bottom drawer which was half full of water - so it was just one soggy mess
DeleteNot a brilliant start to the New Year Sue - but at least it can only get better. Happy New Year
ReplyDeleteThank you Pat - I'm hoping the rest of January will be straightforward
DeleteWe also say on the huh in Norfolk, so I claim it as Norfolk. I had tyre pressure light flashing this morning, just been to the tyre place to get sorted. He put wind in all the tyres and said they were all low and to go back tomorrow and see what happens. And yesterday I thought I was up to date with everything.
ReplyDeleteBother about the tyres. When I had problems last spring it turned out to be the valve
DeleteDisasters in 3s are annoying and gives you extra work to do, but I always say to myself "worse things happen at sea". Chin up!
ReplyDeleteYes, no point getting upset or cross. All will be sorted.
DeleteAlthough it was annoying to throw out the food, I think you were wise as you never can be too careful with chicken especially. Finally finished my Christmas jigsaw this morning so a bit of housework shall now be done! Catriona
ReplyDeleteIt was all too soggy to even think about doing anything with it
DeleteHow annoying on both fronts. Maybe you can tape over (or something similar) the freezer switch to stop it happening again?
ReplyDeleteYes That's something I shall do. The switch is right beside the microwave switch which I switch on and off so probably pressed both at sometime by mistake
Deleteso sorry not the best way to start the new year.
ReplyDeleteCathy
Just annoying but can be sorted sometime
DeleteHow frustrating - this morning our coffee maker decided to fling hot coffee all over the kitchen - don't ask!!!
ReplyDeleteCommiserations
Alison in Wales x
Oh no. What a mess. At least the pool of water from the freezer was clean
DeleteNot a way to start the New Year - hope that's all of the bad luck you'll have in 2023! I would put a bit of tape over that wall switch so it never gets turned off accidentally again.
ReplyDeleteYes I will get it taped up - and checked more often,
DeleteYou've had your 3 things go wrong and the rest of 2023 should be smooth sailing. In retrospect, it is kind of good to get the bad over and done with. How did the freezer get turned off? Maybe an electric surge causing a malfunction?
ReplyDeleteI expect it got turned off by mistake as the switch is next to the microwave switch.
DeleteYou certainly got your three over with quickly.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Anne Brew
ReplyDeleteI try not to have too much in the freezer, having had a power cut this year that lasted so long the meat was ruined.
I've now written FREEZER on the plug as it's next to the carpet sweeper plug.
Best get the kettle on Sue! x
ReplyDeleteAck. Mum always said things come in threes. Hopefully that's the end of it!
