Last week was spent on the Isle of Wight with Son, DiL and the two grandchildren (which is why I wasn't 'around' in blogland very much). It was lovely to have a proper holiday.
Of course one of the special bits of an I.O.W holiday is the ferry trip over the Solent, it was sunny both ways and heading out of Portsmouth the Royal Navy boats are often around.
Our flat was ground floor and basement with a good enclosed garden and with the bedrooms downstairs which confused the children but made for cool bedrooms on the hot days. A perfect holiday home for three generations and very well equipped.
Safe enclosed garden |
A couple of beach days were lovely and then some trips out. I've had many holidays on the Island but not been for more than 20 years. I'd happily move there as the weather seems to always be good, except that the Solent is an expensive piece of water to cross and the Island is incredibly busy during the summer and everything is twice the price of elsewhere!
I'll do some posts about the places we visited during the week.
So glad you had a fine week, with good accommodation. It is a lovely place, but the ferry costs are a pain!
ReplyDeleteOnly one wet day but I think the weather was better at home in Suffolk!
DeleteIt sounds really lovely and I'm so glad you and the family have had such a great time. xx
ReplyDeleteIt was nice to spend more time with two of the grandchildren
DeleteSo pleased you had this lovely family time away. Good to get away for a relaxing break somewhere you enjoy.
ReplyDeleteIt made a good change from home alone!
DeleteThe Solent ferry crossing is the most expensive on a mile per mile ratio. We live so close but rarely cross over to the island. Which ever beach we visit locally we see IoW, it sits on our horizon.
ReplyDeleteIt was very busy on the ferries back and forward - one was a double decker - not seen that before
DeleteHow nice to have good weather for your holiday, and particularly for the ferry trips.
ReplyDeleteNice calm crossings both ways and fine weather most of the week
DeleteI've always wanted to go to the Isle of Wight,, we very nearly went for the Garlic Festival when we lived down south, but then we found out how crazily busy the island gets during that and decided not to.
ReplyDeleteMy younger son knows it much better as he has holidayed/pet sat there numerous times as his girlfriends Uncle (Melvyn Hayes) used to live on the island with his wife. I still want to go at some point in the future.
My 8th visit I think. Much busier now than it was in the late 60's. Very expensive for parking there too
DeleteThat's good to know, thanks. We were wondering if we went whether to take the car or not. Perhaps not!
DeleteWhat a lovely place for a holiday and it looks like you were blessed with good weather too. Looking forward to seeing your photos! Catriona
ReplyDeleteI'll share the places we visited during the week
DeleteI saw the Isle of Wight when I was in Sussex near Chichester a week or so ago. Glad you had a great holiday.
ReplyDeleteNice to have a change of routine for a week and a lovely place to visit
DeleteIt sounds like you all enjoyed a lovely time away. I'm looking forward to reading about the places you visited. Xx
ReplyDeleteIt was a good week away - change of routine is nice
DeleteOh I'm really looking forward to your photos and descriptions of your visit to the Isle of Wight; my eldest son and his wife have just bought their new home there after living near Fareham for many years. Having sold that house, they have now bought one of the old coastguard cottages, high on the clifftop with stunning views of the sea. I guess the ferry fares won't bother them too much as they are now mortgage free!
ReplyDeleteWow! Their new home sounds amazing. House prices are much the same as Suffolk but everything else is very expensive
DeleteI haven't been to the IOW since childhood. Happy memories of holidays there with mum, dad and my sisters. I'm so glad you had a lovely family time and good weather.
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
My 8th visit there starting in about 1967 and including honeymoon in 1979
DeleteGlad you had good weather for your boat trip. I have to plan a family holiday trip again one of these days. It's been awhile...
ReplyDeleteMy few days away on my own last year was OK but better with family
DeleteGetting away for a few days, is so restoring.
ReplyDeleteIt's such a lovely place to visit. I look forward to seeing what you got up to. Arilx
ReplyDeletePhotos to follow................
DeleteWell, that's a nasty anonymous post to follow on from . . . I was going to say apparently plumbers are like gold dust on the IoW and charge gold nugget prices! Or that was what I was told when I was still in Southampton and one of the staff travelled over from the Island daily to work.
ReplyDeleteSounds like the perfect holiday let to be in anyway. With children, an enclosed garden is so important. Glad you had a good time (and good weather).
What a weird anon comment that was - It was deleted PDQ!
DeleteCar parking is very expensive on the IOW after getting there on the very expensive ferry!
Last went to the IOW about 20 years ago on a day trip boat from Poole - which was quite brave as I don’t travel well on the sea. It was very busy then and we caught a bus tour round the island so we could see most places. Cornwall after Covid has got extremely busy and most locals don’t travel far in the Summer because of the traffic!
DeleteWhat a lovely way to spend a holiday with family.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Sounds like a lovely place for a much needed holiday :) xx
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a perfect holiday flat for a family. Lovely that it had a garden..
ReplyDeleteI honestly thought I replied here. Last month, my son and his family spent one week on the IoW. They loved it. Did you get to the beach where the dinosaur footprints were?
ReplyDeleteThe family did one afternoon - I stayed reading in the holiday home
DeleteLovely to see you off on your holy-bobs! Never been to the Isle myself.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you had a good time with family on a ship to the Isle of Wight. I remember a blog friend used to live there when she and her husband decided to leave England and lived there for years together before she died a few years ago.
