Grey Weather and Saturday Morning Jumble Sale

The weather this week doesn't look very exciting.

See the row of little grey clouds?

Trying to find a plus and the only thing I can see is that sunset is now  5pm and it's not too cold.

Had to remind myself yesterday how to take a screenshot again - wish I was better at computers.

********************

As Jumble sales are such a rare event I had to go and have a look. A good crowd inside. I didn't look through the massive pile of clothes but found 4 things. Two for the Granddaughters and two just because.

The beautiful glass ( a vase I guess but really just a piece of art glass - not to be used for flowers) is incredibly heavy, I liked the colours - turquoise and gold, but I'm not sure why I bought the Beswick Cabbage Leaf dish except for it being only 50p and I knew it was worth a bit more. I've been thinking of doing a car-boot sale sometime this summer with Son and DiL maybe, so this can be added to the car -boot box, I might even make a 50p profit!!
Total spend was only £1.50......I do love Jumble sales when they sell stuff cheap to get it gone - so sensible.

I stopped outside BiL's house on the way home where he was parked unloading yet another mower that needed repairing, his least favourite job he says but the one many people ask him to do. He's still hoping to cut my grass which is too long now for my battery powered mower, if only some drying weather could coincide with him not being busy and looking at that weather forecast I don't think it will be this week.

Back Soon

  1. That's a beautiful vase, No wonder you bought it. The leaf isn't my thing but my Nana had something similar so it has a cosy vibe to it for me.
Your forecast is like ours apart from the temperatures which are three degrees or so lower. But yes, the days are getting longer and the sun is slowly higher in the sky. And the bulbs are coming up and I even have some fat buds showing. All very encouraging and a reminder that the dark times go eventually. xx

    1. The leaf isn't really my thing either, if it had been more than £1 for the two pieces I would have put it back!

  2. The only thing to be said in favour of your weather forecast is that it's better than ours.

  3. The vase is gorgeous. Does it have any markings on the bottom? Last night's Antiques Roadshow had a woman who'd bought some jewellery for next to nothing at carboots, and her half dozen pieces were worth £9K ! I sometimes wonder if the sellers watch AR. It could ruin your Sunday evening to realise that the bracelet you sold

  4. Husband was out in the garden until 5.30pm yesterday, but then our sunsets (and sunrises of course) are much later than yours, being about 300 miles west of you!

    1. It's too wet underfoot to venture out into the garden and too grey overhead

  5. The little glass vase is something I would have bought too-it’s such a beautiful piece os art. Still no garden tidying here as the ground is still so wet! Catriona

  6. The vase is lovely and will catch the sunshine beautifully on the windowsill ... whenever we have some sunshine that is, we like you have been in the grey for days and are destined to be in it for a lot of this week seemingly.

    1. I don't think the grass in my garden has stopped growing this winter but it takes several days to get dry

  8. Nice purchases. I didn't think Beswick did those leaf dishes. If I'd seen it, I would have thought it was Carlton Ware without looking underneath. Either way, excellent bargains.

    1. I thought Carlton Ware too as I have a couple of leaf jam dishes that mum had for wedding presents back in the 50s very similar. There was a Beswick leaf gravy/sauce boat at the jumble too but it had a crack so left it

  9. I used to collect that old Beswick ware back in the 80’s, and it wasn’t cheap! It’s almost worthless now of course. It’ll be worth something again one day I’m sure, but not in my lifetime.

    1. It's certainly out of fashion now - I might get £1 for it which would be a 100% profit!

  14. You did well with that vase!
I love vintage fairs but jumble sales ( I guess there’s a difference!) make me shudder! When I was teaching, the headmistress was mad about jumble sales which she held frequently in the school hall. The staff had a choice…we could either help man the jumble sale….or double up and have two classes for the afternoon! I don’t know which was worse as the smell in the hall was dreadful and yet the thought of looking after 60 children…! Needless to say, I did both during my time there…but I never found a bargain like you did!

  15. The glass vase is lovely as it catches the light in your window. I still have a cabbage leaf tomato dish, very similar to yours but darker in colour, I had that and an orange/lemon squeezer from my Mum's house, I occasionally use both:)

    1. I've never used the leaf jam dishes that came from my Mums - not sure why I keep them really

  16. The glass vase resembles Carnival Ware. I have a few pieces that belonged to my Uncle. Carnival Ware is not seen very often. You were lucky to find such a lovely vase.

    1. Carnival ware is usually just one colour and pressed glass given an iridescent glaze, this is coloured through the glass and very heavy

  17. I like the vase and the cabbage leaf dish. I can imagine using that cabbage dish in one of your seasonal displays - maybe summertime?
Your weather is better than ours - cold with SNOW coming this week!

It's bitterly cold here just now, but at least it isn't raining. Xx

  20. There's a streetlamp outside my living room window.
When it flicks on in the evening I glance at the clock on the mantlepiece and I'm glad to say its shows a later time each day, if only by a minute!
