The weekend visit from the Surrey family turned out to be very exhausting with a distinct lack of sleep for everyone due to Son-in-Law going down with a really horrible cold and cough on his journey up, Youngest Grandson had a bit of upset tummy and sickness on Saturday which he passed onto mummy (Eldest Daughter) on Sunday night ,who was really poorly and Eldest Grandson spent a lot of time being a seven year old grump! - probably due to all the above.
Then on Monday morning Daughter-in-Law, who is a teaching assistant, had to go into school to do preparation which she hadn't realised until quite late, so Middle Grandson and Youngest Granddaughter were here for the morning too and I had to just deliver the cakes that I'd spent Sunday morning baking (after the family went out) to the WI coffee morning rather than staying to help. Dashing back as quickly as possible to look after grandchildren while Daughter rested and Son-in-Law had to drive 10 miles to get his electric car quick charged before their journey home.
Monday afternoon after everyone had gone I cancelled going to evening WI and this weeks exercise class as I reckoned it was going to take me another day or three to recover and thank goodness I did because I woke up in the middle of Monday night with a variation of the bug they had kindly passed onto me! It lasted all through Tuesday which I spent alternating between laying on the settee, reading and resting and doing more bits of clearing up, stripping beds, and putting things back in their rightful places after visitors. Thankfully it was only a 24 hour thing so I'm fine again now - although still tired.
(Probably good that Youngest Daughter and Eldest Granddaughter were away on holiday and missed joining in the madness)
In between all the sickness, coughing and grumpy-ness we did manage a couple of things together - firstly a Sunflower Maze, just up the road from home.
They actually have 3 sunflower mazes but by the time we'd been round the longest and biggest we decided that was enough . And maze is a bit of a misnomer as it only had one very winding path through and no dead ends so it was impossible to get lost which was probably a Very Good Thing!
The eldest two grandchildren liked the bale mountain - giant straw bales piled up and the youngest two got help to get to the top and also liked the sand pits made from giant tractor tyres.
Eldest Grandson on top of the giant bale mountain at a time he wasn't grumpy! I rather like this photo- it will be printed out to update the photo frame.
Back Tomorrow.
Sue
I think a maze with just a winding path and no dead ends is actually a labyrinth. And boring.
ReplyDeleteand they charge quite a lot for their pop-up 'visitor attraction' so we wouldn't go again!
DeleteSo sorry, the visit was marred by illness. Did your son take a test for covid? The new variant is particularly vicious. and it's already spread well around here.
ReplyDeleteThe last time I went in the maze, I ended up having a panic attack. The hatch was very high and it was very claustrophobic and I was stuck in there for over an hour. trying to get out. you visited sounds more like a labyrinth. and the owners possibly don't know the difference.
It was grandson who was poorly with sickness and babies are very good at spreading illness.
DeleteSounds like a bit of a nightmare! Glad you got off (fairly) lightly with the illnesses all around you. What a shame for all concerned. The prices of visitor attractions are scandalous, I think.
ReplyDeleteNo not a nightmare - just a tummy bug spread by champion spreaders - that is people under two years old!
DeleteSo sorry the family visit marred by illness. But what a blessing you were there to help with the children on Monday morning. But yes, grandparent duty is really exhausting, even without catching their bugs! I'm still getting my place back in order after the family's departure!
ReplyDeleteHad to miss a WI thing but never mind - I was much needed at home.
DeleteChildren do harbour bugs, I can guarantee our two will pass on bugs to me, but bugs, family and this heat, no wonder you are tired. Your grandson looks angelic in the photo.
ReplyDeleteHe may look angelic but.................
DeleteAn exciting time for all. That's the way we build immunity!
ReplyDeleteThankfully it only lasted 24 hours but it went round all the family
DeleteGreat photos and wonderful how the Sunflowers attract the bees and bumble bees. I have just one here - which grew from Keith's muesli dregs going out with the (saved) washing up water. I will grow more next year.
ReplyDeleteSorry that the bug-machines came and stayed with you, but at our age, our immunity to those childhood germs is long gone!
It's wonderful how far and wide toddlers can spread their germs!
DeleteOur one sunflower in the garden is behind our runner bean maze. It is 8 feet high and has a flower, but is it ever going to open?
ReplyDeleteMost at the fields were open but a few still left to open so maybe yours still have time
DeleteOh, dear. You could have well done without a lot of that but the photos are great. I love sunflowers, they are such happy plants. xx
ReplyDeleteIncredible to see 1,000s all smiling and absolutely covered in bees
DeleteOh goodness an eventful visit, no wonder you need a few days recovery time! Photos are great x
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
Hope their next visit is less eventful!
DeleteWhat a shame that sickness had to spoil the visit! At least you managed to have some fun! I hope that you are fully recovered now…and taking it easy!
ReplyDeleteI'm so rarely poorly it's quite a surprise to feel ill for a day or two
DeleteThats too bad re the sickness. Good that you managed to spend some time with them tho and that you had an outing. That is an absolutely great photo! Jean in Winnipeg
ReplyDeleteToddlers like to spread their germs!
DeleteSorry for the sickness that went through your group. Good that you managed a little bit of fun anyway. Good photos!
ReplyDeleteHopefully their next visit will be better
DeleteIt sounds like the change-of-seasons bug caught you all. At least it was fast moving and you got to see those beautiful sunflowers. The photo of your grandson on top of the high bales is outstanding. Tell him he was the most handsome chap on the bales.
ReplyDeleteHe is a lovely boy but very contrary sometimes!
DeleteSaw quite a few fields with sunflowers planted around the edges. They looked spectacular.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back!
Often planted for pheasant cover ready for shooting!
DeleteNot quite the visit you were all hoping for, but at least you got to spend some time together, and that photo of your grandson on the bale is lovely ... I can't believe for a moment that he is ever grumpy. ;-)
ReplyDeleteHe can be extremely annoyingly, contrary and grumpy - until he smiles!
DeleteAww bless...memorable for all the wrong reasons...never mind...next time :)
ReplyDeleteDon't need too many memories like the weekend!
