Almost Money Wasted

Thought I might as well go and look at the Model Railway Exhibition- it was at the site of the nearest boot-sale so I looked round there too beforehand.

Should have known really that there wouldn't be as much there as promised, their Antiques Fayres are always smaller than they could be - I don't bother to go and look anymore.

At least I was able to take a few photos to make a blog post..............

I like 00 gauge best, they can fit more buildings and interesting bits into their portable layouts. My sister had an Hornby electric railway for a while and I made lots of the kit buildings for it- although it didn't have a permanent layout. I made some out of the cardboard printed kits and some out of airfix - which I didn't like painting.

Huge layout with O gauge track and much bigger trains. Must have taken them quite a while to set this up.

There were also several stalls selling all the bits and bobs used to make the layouts more interesting.

I didn't find anything at the car-boot sale and was soon home again.

  1. I grew up quite close to Beaconscot Model Village, a huge outdoor park with hundreds of little buildings. The best bit was the model railway which ran everywhere

    1. I love a model village - we always went if there was one somewhere when we were on holiday with the children

  2. We used to own the main hobby shop in Ipswich and had all the enthusiasts poring over the buildings and accessories looking for their next addition to their layout. There were some younger boys but most were grown men! 😃

    1. It was all older men at the exhibition! I can't think where there was a hobby shop in Ipswich - maybe not in the centre. I remember the Dolls House Shop near Rope walk

  4. I like model railways too . Not so much for the trains ( although I do like steam trains ) as the scenery and buildings . My husband has made a couple of layouts in N guage which really is tiny . It would be much too fiddly for me and he has to use a magnifying glass sometimes . It does mean he can keep it in his study which is also tiny ! Helen

    1. N gauge is so small - must be hard to find bits for the layouts

  5. I have to admit that train sets and their enthusiastic owners/builders do nothing for me. My Dad bought my brother a train set and made him a huge layout on a board that was set up in the corner of his bedroom (I had to move into the box-room of my parents house so they could fit it in). He played with it once or twice and then it was abandoned much to my Dad's dismay, I think he wanted to play with it more than my brother ever did.

  6. It must take a while to set up the different stalls for the exhibition but not something I had as a child. My daughter loved Scalectrix and my brother bought her a layout when she was about six and she couldn’t get a look in for all the adults playing with it! Catriona

  7. There used to be a house near here where the local model train club met, the entire basement for their huge set-up, always building. Every Christmas they opened to the public as a fundraiser for the emt squad and raised huge amounts. We'd go each year to see what they'd added.

  8. The trains set with entire landscapes are lovely. My brother had a Lionel train, and he loved it.

  9. We have a model railway in the second loft. It's still being constructed after many, many years. I like the engines best - so beautifully made and detailed.

  10. My favorite is the one with the tractor show included. How nice to have all the mini-people roaming around looking at the tractors! My grandsons would enjoy this show as they love trains and all vehicles!

  11. We got our son a good model train set when he was enthusiastic about them… briefly. Unless you have a dedicated space they’re a pain to set up. As a child my younger brother had one … it lived on a table tennis table in the family room, and got hauled up to the ceiling when anyone wanted to play table then is! The track went across to a wall, along there, through a HOLE IN THE WALL to the bedroom next door, across the corner of that room, through the window to the enclosed veranda, through the door back into the family room!! Of course the exciting thing was whether the train would reappear!! But we had such fun with it! Happy memories. I’m Virginia, but I’m told I’m anonymous today!

  12. I have always found model train set ups so very interesting. I had at one point wanted to start one for our oldest son, but he really was not at all interested in them.

    God bless.

  13. It does seem to be the way of the advertising world now. They Big Things up, take your money at the door and once you're in, it's quite a let down.

  14. I can't say I find them very interesting, but some people quite enjoy them. Good for them! Someone in the comments mentioned they owned the hobby shop in Ipswich - I remember that shop!
