How many Grandads?

I'm short of ideas for blog posts so thought I'd share a few more old photos. Most of the photos I have come from my Dad's side of the family, they were all country people - farm workers and then farm owners.

First is my Grandad F. My Dad's Father. Photo is probably sometime in the 1960s. He died when I was about 18 so I do remember him, although Mum wasn't a fan so I'm not sure he visited often and even less after he remarried someone Mum also didn't like.

My Grandad's Father in Law, wish I knew more about this picture

Below is Grandad's father, he died in 1955 the same year as I was born.

And the grave of my Grandad's Grandfather over the road in the churchyard

In comparison there are hardly any photos of Grandad W. on my Mum's side of the family. Always living in town, working in factories, totally different to Dad's family.

Just this one, where he is far right on this photo at my Mum's wedding. I just about remember him, he died when I was in my early teens after being very unwell for several years. The results of working in a dusty factory, smoking un tipped cigarettes and being in the fire brigade during the war.

No photo's of anyone further back on this side of the family, I don't think any exist.

Back Soon
Sue

  1. Fascinating - I love looking at photos like these and pondering on how they lived their lives, what challenges they faces, how they thought and acted. One can never really know but it's interesting to speculate. xx

  4. Lovely to have all these photos. My family was not one into taking photos so I have very few indeed of my ancestors and my early life. Treasure them.

  5. Hi, have you started a family tree - it’s a great hobby. I started mine at college (42 years ago!) & am still adding to it ( via the Ancestry website) My side are all a bit boring but I have traced my husband’s side to Robert de Bruce! Glenda

  6. What a splendid wedding photo and the dresses are gorgeous. I don’t have many photos of my grandparents on my mum’s side and none from Dad’s side. I went down a rabbit hole two weeks ago looking through my daughter’s childhood photos to make a PicCollage for her 50th birthday on 13th March. Catriona

    1. The picture collage sounds a lovely gift.
I passed lots of the children's photos onto them when we moved from the smallholding along with certificates etc. Still have a few.

  7. Old photographs raise so many unanswerable questions. Lovely to look at, though.

    1. I'm glad I have so many, not sure if anyone else in the family has as many as I've got - or others that I haven't got

  8. Your Granddad's father looks VERY dashing in that photo at the church door. I do wish more people would write on the back of their photographs in pencil, just a date and names would be so helpful wouldn't they. With my Mum's memory being extremely shaky these days it's being left to me to try and work out who's who in a lot of our old photos.

I guess for most people these days actual photos are outdated and just stored on phones or computers. It's a shame in so many ways.

    1. I went through lots writing a note on the back of who they were and relationship to me, others I could find out dates perhaps if I had time.

  9. You have a lovely collection of photos.
Knowing about and even remembering your Grandads is amazing.
I never met my Grandads. One died before I was born, and the other one left the family and moved across the country.
The wedding photo is precious. Your mother and father are a very handsome couple.

  11. My sister is the keeper of the old family photos. I didn't know my Mom's parents as they died before I was born but we were close to my Dad's parents and I am named after my Grandmother. I think in the future photos taken digitally will disappear and people will regret not printing them out and labeling them.

I love old photos. I do have some of my grandfather who I never met and died when I was about 4. He lived in Glasgow and we were near London with not much money to travel. His wife died when my dad was 10 so nothing there. My mum never knew her dad but we knew her mum well and have photos. I'm trying to make a family record book for our granddaughter but not getting far. Its lovely you know about your ancestors.

  16. Old pictures can raise more questions than they answer. I have some like that too, but further back.

  19. How nice to have such photos! I hope you've made a note on the back of them who they are. When we were going through Mum's things we found loads of photos and though she'd written on a few of them, many were of people we have no idea who they are! It's really sad.
