Bank Holiday Sunday

A beautiful morning.............sunshine and breeze. I was outside at 6.45am sorting out pea sticks for the mange-tout peas. Another job done. The radio said there were big thunderstorms in the UK last night, but not here, I had to water the peas to be able to get the sticks into the ground.

Then off to the local car boot sale where I bought this lot.
Guess what.....books for grandchildren! some cup-cake cases, preserves kit, two mugs, bunting and that large thing top left is a clay flower pot in the shape of a big boot. So I've chucked two mugs that had scratches inside, put the labels and jar toppers in the drawer ready for autumn, added the cake cases to the few I had left, put the books in with all the others ready for the next Jacob or Florence visit and the bunting away for next summer. The boot has been planted up with trailing geraniums (also from the boot sale). Total spend £5 for the boot and £2.90 for the other bits plus £1.40 for the geraniums.

Not so many car boots there this week and I was home again by before 10am. I put the TV on to see what time the French Open Tennis was due to start and it was already on -  well, the commentators were there and they were talking about it -  ITV4 have it on all day every day for the whole 2 weeks.

Outside for more gardening.

After lunch I drove over to see son, DIL and Willow for an hour or so. There was a flower festival and stalls in the village church so we went to have a look. I found another Mary Wesley book - 'Not That Sort of Girl' - on the  secondhand book stall........... one  the library don't have in stock.
Flower show theme was a book title.
This was 'The Dressmaker'

and this one 'Rabbit Stew and a Penny or Two' ( A book about life as a gypsy traveller)

We had tea and cake, I spoke to someone I'd not seen since 1978 and then  went home to watch more tennis.

Another day of getting through.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. Glad you are keeping busy. It is, as you say, a matter of getting through. Your boot sales sound better value than ones near me, I never seem to find bargains like that. The boot looks lovely - can we have a picture once the plants are established, please?

  2. Some good bargains there Sue. I've lost count of the amount of books I've bought for Lily, either from charity shops or the car boot. A lot of them quite clearly hadn't even been read before.
No thunder storms or rain here. I've been trying to keep the garden watered without being wasteful.
The flowers are stunning. I'm always in awe of people's talent and how they interpret the different themes at these events.
Keep on getting through. Much love. Xx

  3. Some good buys there, I bet the boot looks good planted up with geraniums, I planted up a pair if real wellies with some Ox-eye Daises, they should look good when they flower. I haven't gone completely mad ... they were letting in water 😉

You're doing exactly the right thing getting through it a day at a time, it's the only way. There will be good days and bad days ... but they will be what you make of them. ♥️

    1. The cat keeps waking me up early and the dawn chorus. This morning I got woken at 5.30 and surprised myself by going back to sleep until 7.15 and then waking up feeling more tired than if I'd stayed awake earlier!

  5. Grandchildren will enjoy the new books when they visit. I wonder how many mugs end up in car boot sales and you are so good to only replace what’s needed? Looking for ward to seeing the boot planted up.

    1. I'm ever so fussy about mugs, they have to be big and the 'right' shape and good to look at.( and preferably second hand and cheap!)) So I'd kept two that had scratched inside for ages waiting to find two to replace them.

  6. Nice finds at the car boot sale, I especially like the mug with the chicken on it. Good to keep yourself busy.
We are in France at the moment and it looks like there will be rain today (like yesterday and probably tomorrow as well).

  7. I think that you have got some great and useful things from the carboot. Its nice to come home with just what is needed and not just because its cheap...which I used to do about 20 years ago!.I know what you mean about another day got through,my Mam says it every day since we lost my Dad.But you are a strong woman, just like my Mam is and keeping busy is the key to getting through. My Mam started painting her huge garden fence...she is 85 in a couple of months!,so me and my sister went down and finished it off for her. After we had gone, she decided to paint the post on it light green!,With the brown fence and the green post it looks like a box of mint chocolates. She loves it!So glad that you had a lovely time with your Family.Hope that you all have a lovely Bank Holiday Monday,xx

    1. Well. goodness me how strange. We were there in the afternoon about 2.30 to 3.30. Would have said hello if you were there at the same time and I'd recognised you! There with Son DIL,Willow (in her pram) and DIL's dad who was staying with them for the weekend. Spoke to ex-husband's other ex wife and heard he now has a third ex wife!!! Oh yes just looked in Programme and can see her first name which I remember from way back. Son and DIL are are up the very last road on the left as you go up station rd and hoping they don't build more houses on the farm field behind them.

    2. Yes, what a coincidence. I went before lunch but the family were all there at the same time as you and yours, so you probably saw them! They live a the Folly end of the village. Keep strong Sue.

  13. Good to keep yourself busy, as others have said.

We had huge thunder and lightning overnight but no rain.

Was up near you on Saturday, did a drive last a lovely house but it was way to close to a huge chicken farm....which I suspect smells!

    1. Were you looking at a long thatched house or a pink house with lots of grass. If you were looking at either of those then you were very near us and no the chicken farm doesn't smell at all and no noise except for now and again when they are blowing in the sawdust bedding and that's done very quick. I sometimes wonder if they actually do have chickens there or maybe it's some sort of cover for SOMETHING ELSE!!!

    2. or maybe you were somewhere completely different as there are lots of chicken sheds in Mid Suffolk!

    3. The long thatch that is right next to the chicken farm. I am amazed that it doesn’t smell. Would you be willing to talk to me via email?

    5. Thanks Sue. I’ll be in touch. There is another house in the area that looks promising on paper.

Ideally we’d like to me a bit further south in Suffolk - we have to be on an extremely quiet road....as in almost no traffic.

    6. This village and part of Suffolk is the quietest place I've ever lived, I love it because the roads are empty and I can get almost everywhere without using the A140 and A14. When I go to car boot sales early in the morning I can drive for about 5 miles without seeing another car!

  14. We had torrential rain and thunder l Living in the midlands , It has flooded our kitchen and come through the roof and effected the lights , They were sparking and smoking last night , Its at times like these that i am happy to be a tenant rather than an owner because of the expense of putting things right , Glad you are plodding along and trying to have some so called normal life under the circumstances, Take care , Eileen

  16. 6.45 am, call that early? (This is going to sound like that Monty Python sketch, "Luxury, you don't know the meaning of the word … we lived in a paper bag, got up before we went to bed …" well, something like that!) We were awake at 4.23 this morning and actually got up and showered and dressed, it was such a lovely morning. But boy, are we tired now!
By the way, you are doing great, Sue.
    Hugs from Devon,

  17. I was up at 1 am, and 4am and finally 5am. House and dog sitting for a friend with noisy neighbours, my daughter waking for a wee not knowing where she was and finally the dog giving up and needing a wee too! Early morning is a good time tho, you can enjoy the birdsong and peace. I like pottering when I know most people are still asleep. (I also know the book 10 in a bed. Lovely! I can recite so many children's books by heart, they are the building blocks of life.)

  18. Sounds like a very good day, finding fun bargains, some tennis, gardening and a visit to family too. We had a BBQ party here with our son's new girlfriend and her little girl and our DIL's friend and her 2 kids who are moving away. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  20. Some good buys at your local car boot sales. The preserves bits are the sort of thing I would have gone for too. Of course, we go down mainly to look for stock for our Fairs. With the local auction charging 24% ON TOP OF the hammer price, we can no longer afford to buy our stock at THAT auction.

Thank you for the photos from the flower festival. I have to say, you could have a lot of fun getting together all the bits to do a particular setting.

I am glad you are managing to keep on keeping on at a time when life is so difficult for you. Keeping busy and distracted always seems to help in sad times.

  21. 24% - blimey, do they charge sellers that much too, then theres VAT I guess - makes everything very expensive, how do they justify it?

  22. I like those displays. They look interesting. I do miss those fetes. Sigh. Some nice finds at the sale. I'm so glad to see that you're getting out and about.
