Fruit and Veg Bags

I'd already bought a pack of three of these re-usable vegetable and fruit bags from Asda (£1)and then had 3 more bigger ones from a pen-friend for Christmas.

I keep some in my bag and try to use them - not always possible as many supermarkets are still selling pre-packed in plastic bags.

I've passed a couple onto other people.

There isn't much I miss from the year in Ipswich except for the brilliant fruit and vegetable shop that was not far from home with fresh stuff in everyday and hardly anything pre-packed.

Guess what I did after writing this post a couple of weeks ago? ..........Instead of putting 2 of these veg bags back in my handbag after taking this photo, I put them all in the drawer, so when I went to Morrisons the next day..................I hadn't got them to use!!...........Duh!

Many thanks for lots of tea-towel/tea cloth comments yesterday and hello to a new follower - welcome.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. I keep a few of these in the bottom of my shopping baskets for the supermarket. Our local greengrocer only has paper bags now. Small changes happening everywhere. I think I might write a post on this later this week. Thanks for the idea Sue.

    1. They are back in my bag now.
I'm glad you haven't posted it as I was worried it might have gone missing. I shall look forward to using and might make some for gifts myself if it goes well.

  3. But at least Morrisons have paper bags for fruit & veg! Like those bags, I need to get some of those.

    1. Asda in Stow had them in among the fruit and veg so I expect Ipswich is the same.

  4. I have three but have hardly used them. Still so much repacked fruit and veg. Any that is loose is very expensive like 40p for a single apple.

    1. Yes, I've found that too. Although all fruit seems to be more expensive this winter than previous. Hope I get a better apple crop this year

  5. The Morrison’s paper bags are so thick and sturdy. Perfect for potatoes.

  6. I keep a couple of these bags in the shopping bag in the car. We've used them a few times for cauliflower or brussels but as you say many supermarkets still have pre-packed fruit and veg:)

  7. Luckily our Friday market produce is all 'loose' on the counters and is then packed either direct into my shopping wheelie or put into brown paper bags.

  8. Unfortunately all the organic veg is wrapped at the moment so it doesn't get mixed in with the sprayed ones. I am hoping they will discover some way to separate them better which avoids packaging - I would go for a string bag like lemons maybe. I like to support the organic way of farming I think it is important for our future environment so even though it is dearer and it comes packaged I still prefer to buy it. Anything that is loose I just pop in a paper bag or straight in the trolley. When we used to get our veg from a local greengrocer (remember them) they would only put the dirty potatoes and carrots into a paper bag and then into your shopping bag and put everything else on top.
On the good side at least the supermarkets are trying to get away from plastic bags.

  9. Why not make yourself some f&v bags from your stash of tea towels? A simple seam up 2 sides and a channel at the top for some cord and you have some useful items - could even be for Christmas 2020 presents.

  10. I did the very same thing last week, left the bags and the list on the dining table. Duh!

  11. I have 4 of these which I bought in Lidl and try to remember to take to the shops with me.

Mamasmercantile - it is normally my shopping list that gets left on the table at home!

  12. My daughter made me some of these bags from her old net curtains and popped them in with my pressie at Christmas. So very useful! I haven't managed to remember to put them in my bag yet when going shopping though......

  13. I made my own reusable bags back in the 80's then realised how much extra I was weighing on the scales! Each time I used as bag, its weight added one or two pence to the total! It's a double edge sword.

  14. I saw some of these in Sainsburys recently and was going to pick them up, then realised that there weren't any items on our shopping list that were available loose in that particular branch. At least they are moving in the right direction, I suppose!

  15. Since all the stores here in our city are either charging for plastic carry bags or have gone back to using paper (and charging for those). I have put off making some of these bags until I can figure out what to use instead of plastic for kitty litter.

    God bless.

  16. I find them very useful when I visit our local-ish greengrocers. Nothing is ready bagged, so you can either use their flimsy paper bags, or take your own reusable ones...of course the trick is remembering to take them with you in the first place.

  17. Lovely that you buy reusable bags. And you wash them, between uses, I imagine.

We found Compostable veggie/fruit bags at one of our grocery stores, last week.

Our State is outlawing plastic bags, as of March 1st. This store, is ahead of the law.

I do despise the use of plastic, for so many unnecessary items. Like these bags. And so many 'serving size' containers, etc.

    Every bit helps....

  18. I also have a set of these and take them with me to the supermarket. I always try to choose loose fruit and veg when it is available but it is not always on the shelves every week.

  19. These seem to be very popular, always in my shopping bag when I go out.

  20. Great idea to be using these bags and cloth tote bags for shopping.
I have a small bowl near the door for my car keys and sunnies so all my shopping bags are folded and put next to that, ready to go back in the car......it helps a memory like a sieve.😁

  21. I've got some of the f&v bags, I try to remember to put them back into my jute shopping bags when I unpack the shopping. Our Morrisons still does too much prepacked produce, and far too much use of blasted shrink wrap, I hate the stuff.

  22. One of our local supermarkets is now providing compostible produce bags. They feel awful (sort of clingy) but they do break down quickly once they get wet.
