Saturday Round-up + One Week Eating Local (2). Part 4

Did anyone watch the programme about how the 2012 Olympic open ceremony was organised yesterday? I caught the end. There were so many bits I'd not seen at the time (or when this programme first went out in 2016). 2012 was a busy summer for us - as Colin had given up full time County Council work in March so we were growing and selling even more than usual and he took on lots of local work too. The Olympics went by in a blur, so I shan't mind watching a few bits again although I'd rather have seen what we should have been watching from Tokyo. Hope it happens next year - perhaps Covid 19 will be long forgotten by then. Boris says things might be more normal for Christmas - goodness knows if he is right or not. We can only wait and see.

Meanwhile I'm going to be shopping even less than I have been after next Friday because I find wearing a mask very claustrophobic (Wow I got the right spelling first time!). For the last 4 months I've been once a fortnight to either Asda or Morrisons and then a quick trip to the local Co-op in between. I've not been in any town centre shops and other than food shops have only been in the bank, post office, farm shop and local hardware shop. Far from encouraging me to rush out to all the other shops in Stowmarket or Diss the mask wearing will make me visit less - no help to the economy at all!

A mixed weather week but OK for getting some grass cut and weeding done.  Wednesday evening was positively chilly and when I got up Thursday morning I found the boiler running - not good for mid July and then Friday the temperature suddenly shot up to the high 70s. I haven't been far all week again, just local Co-op, Farm shop and Post Office where I sent another parcel of books off to Music Magpie. Not a lot earned but better than nothing.

The Runner bean seeds sown late on July 1st have now been planted out and  the Basil cuttings which had rooted really well in their modules have been put in bigger pots. 6 very healthy plants from that £1 pot from Morrisons and all the remaining leaves were used  fresh and or dried in the microwave.

The eating local carried on with the rest of the bacon and egg pie with home made potato salad and my own cucumber and beetroot. Still honey on toast for breakfast. Cheese and tomato sandwich for lunch with beetroot.

This week I'm grateful for
  • Locally produced food
  • Lots of veg. from the garden
  • Time to get back to the cross stitch

I hope you have good plans for the weekend.
If the weather is fine I shall have a socially distanced coffee with Col's sister today and the car boot sale tomorrow............ MUST get up earlier, although the forecast says rain first thing. I need to look for a rolling pin and palette knife as I'm making things with terracotta coloured air-drying clay (More hamper gifts so I won't be putting the photo up until December 26th!) and I don't want my good kitchen tools stained or spoiled.
Otherwise I'll be reading, cross stitching and probably a bit more grass cutting - the only way to keep up with it is to do some almost everyday.

Back Monday

  1. Totally agree about claustrophobia and face masks. I’ve been shopping every ten days but will have to resort to an online service for the foreseeable future. How will I be able to check for reduced stickers?!

    1. I have realised that you never get goods with 'reduced' stickers on them in online orders. You do get special offers or the occasional reduced price offers (eg '2 for £10' and similar. But not the real knockdown prices.

  2. Another one here who will be shopping less when masks are mandatory!

  3. A six inch length of wooden broom handle makes an excellent small rolling pin for clay projects. Hope the weather is good for the sale

    1. That's a good idea but I think all my broom handles are attached to something!

  4. The whole experience of going out is now joyless. The social distancing rules, even without mask wearing, render common sense dead. I have not read of any mass deaths in the Bournemouth area following the media hysteria surrounding families visiting the beach two or three weeks ago.

  5. I went to my little town Leyton Buzzard last Wednesday to go into the bank and I broke down i was so scare hardly any one about my D brought a few things but apart from the bank I just sat and waited her, quite a few people had masks on, I did not see any buses. We went on to St.Albans to see my grandson (it was his birthday) and his GF gave us tea which was nice. I don't think I shall be going anywhere in a hurry for some time. Have a nice weekend and enjoy yourself what ever you do Sue.

    1. So sorry to hear how worried you were about going out. It's going to be difficult for many people who've been at home for so many weeks.

  6. Although I am claustrophobic, I don't have a problem wearing a mask but I do suffer from asthma which means I could probably ask for an exemption card. Have you thought about a clear visor style?

  7. 'It will all be over by Christmas.' Heard that before?

For me, the problem with wearing a mask is that my glasses fog up. We are advised to pinch the mask over the top of the nose to stop this happening but it doesn't work for me. Like others here, I really don't feel like shopping, although I'll have to brave the garden centre sometime for essential supplies.

    1. I use tape along the top of a mask to prevent my glasses from fogging. It has to be applied with a lot of care, but does work.

    2. Seemingly I heard that a folded paper tissue placed inside the mask will also help your glasses not steaming up.

    3. My glasses are usually up on top of my head!

Let's hope the "over by Christmas" isn't as long as WWII!

  8. Your basil looks wonderful. I have been using cutting for a few years now, so much easier and faster than growing from seed.

  9. I envy you your car boot sale. I don't think ours will be starting up any time soon. Since mandatory mask wearing came in force in Scotland last Friday I realised I haven't been out since well before then cause I haven't actually worn one. My daughter and husband do all the shopping. Although all I have been doing for the last two weeks is making masks, all day every day. For family, friends and friends of friends.

  10. I find the mask a bit 'closed in' too. Not totally comfortable and decidedly strange but that's because it is a new experience, I suppose.
My glasses steamed up a bit but I just left it and they unsteamed again. I suppose they warmed up enough for my breath not to steam them.

  11. Had to spend 50 minutes on two trains each way yesterday (essential travel). I coped with the mask by lifting it forward from my chin from time to time to clear the moisture, and by allowing the air to suck in from the top, which means the air flow goes across your eyes (risk of infection) which dries them out. I would not have wanted to wear it any longer, and at least I could take it off when changing trains (which might be against the rules but lots of others did too). I was astonished by how many people were disregarding the rules - taking off mask to eat or talk loudly on phone, or simply not bothering at all (although they could be exempt).

  12. I don’t mind wearing a mask too much, I used to work in operating theatres so we would have to wear them for many hours at a time. I also travelled back from Spain last week, having been stuck there, and ended up wearing a mask for 7 hours travelling. It got quite hot and stuffy at times.
I’m not sure many people think going out is much fun at the moment and there seems no end in sight.
Am really enjoying your eating local posts, they’re very interesting.

  13. I'm pretty much sticking to my shopping once a week, shopping, even browsing in charity shops, just seems alien to me at the moment.

  14. The science proves that masks saves lives. In my little town in Ontario Canada masks are mandatory and it has made me more comfortable in going out to the shops. I am protecting you and you are protecting me....we are in this together. You see what the mask debate has done in the USA...people there are still refusing to wear masks because they think it infringes on their freedom. As their top infectious disease expert said it is hard to teach people to care about each other.

    1. I certainly won't refuse to wear one - that's just ignorant

  15. I wrapped some of that foam draught insulating stuff in felt and stitched that across the bridge part of my masks. Seems to help with the glasses steaming up. I also made some triple layer masks out of old cotton curtains. At least I can breathe through them! Didn't enjoy shopping before all this, it's now become even more of a necessary evil! I've never tried growing basil from cuttings. Must have a go. xx

  16. Your basil looks tremendous. We never grew it successfully in UK. Various types of bush basil abound here in Greece, and I always have one on the balcony as it is alleged to discourage mozzies (I don't believe a word of it but will try anything that isn't going to poison me at the same time). Last week a neighbour showed us a basil with truly enormous leaves and told us that where she comes from they use the leaves (instead of vine leaves) for making dolmades. I've managed to find one in the market and am feeding it up ... will post photos eventually

  17. Although I do mu shopping online now, the masks will be good for those times I haven't tackled the moustache hahahaha. I am very impressed with your basil. Might copy you!

  18. I understand the claustrophobic feeling of wearing a mask all the time. Our county now requires mask wearing and I find it helps me to shop a lot faster in order to get to the car and take it off. In hot weather it can be very uncomfortable. I hope you have a good weekend and will be able to go to the car boot sale.

  19. although masks are hot and itchy I quite like the feeling that I am semi invisible! I don't like supermarkets as nobody is distancing properly so we shop online and I found a sausage factory that does mail order so bbq is taken care of.

  20. i would like to have a go at making air dried clay, what do you use to colour yours with? thanks x

    1. It's a pack of proper DAS clay from a craft shop or online.
