Yesterday

Very pleased with what I got done outside yesterday  - first the biggish job of cutting down all the raspberry canes that have finished fruiting. Two big wheelbarrows full added to the bonfire heap. It's easy to see which canes need cutting down while the leaves are still on them =  all the ones that have gone yellow and starting to die off. Somewhere in the overgrown muddle that is the raspberry area are some Autumn fruiting canes - hopefully.

I came in to have a coffee after the clearing up and THUD - the postman brought me a new book - I'm so enjoying this buying  books thing - I told my sister about Mum always saying when giving me birthday or Christmas money " for goodness sake don't spend it on books" and she doesn't remember Mum ever saying anything similar to her. So it seems it's only me with guilt about spending money on things I love best.

These were the two books I bought for July. I'm reading The Splendid and the Vile - it's fascinating but I'm not going to get it finished before the mobile library brings my great ol' heap of reservations.

While I was indoors a man came from UK Power Network with information about a planned power cut in mid - August . Just for one morning when they are working on some power lines down the road - so no problem.

Back outside and I remembered I wanted to wrap some duct tape around my washing line - trying to make it last a bit longer as the outer plastic has split in several places. Then I filled some small pots with compost for pegging in some strawberry runners that have appeared from the new plants in pots on the patio. I'm thinking about abandoning the strawberry bed we made when we came here - it's just too dry where it is and too far to carry water and if I don't bother with squash and pumpkins in pots then I've enough big pots to have several filled with strawberries on the patio - within reach of the outside tap and hosepipe.

After lunch I strimmed around the edges of the raspberry bed and did some more grass cutting with the ride on mower, after that it was time for a cuppa and I spent the rest of the afternoon watching the Battle of the Brits tennis. So Very good to see some live sport on TV and a favourite sport too. Saw a trail for snooker starting Friday as well.

A good day
Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. I was very lucky as a child when it came to books and reading. I learnt to read all by myself at age of five (we don't start our school until age of 7 here) and my mother's best friend was working in printing factory. I got about 10 books for Christmas and birthday every year. We also had a library van/bus once a week in our village, and I borrowed about 10 books per week (plus books I borrowed from our school library, which had only anciet books - I read them all) I did read so much, that the librarian/driver used to ask me if I had read this and that book, if I hadn't, he bought it for the library (and for me).

My strawbwerries have been very productive this summer, but now, after several weeks of rain, there's mould. Pity, but such is summer around here, gives same takes some.

    1. Didn't have many books as a child but made up for it once I earned my own money!

  2. Most of my raspberries are autumn fruiting, but have been giving fruit since end of June. I manured them well this year and they have grown hugely and dwarfed the Gladioli wands (I shall pick those for the house so we CAN see them!)

I have always been a bookworm and asked for pony books every Christmas. I cannot imagine a life without them - it would be purgatory. Enjoy your library book bonanza when it arrives, and glad you have some live tennis (and snooker) to enjoy on tv. We are enjoying the horse racing from Goodwood . . .

    1. Must check my new gladioli that I squashed into the cut-flower bed.
Hope I can collect all my reservations from the library van apparently they've put a limit of 4 books per person - daft idea

  4. It was my MIL who stipulated not to spend birthday money she gave us on whatever we (husband, daughter and I and husband's sister) were interested in at the time whether it was gardening, books, CDs etc. Needless to say we all ignored her.

Our strawberries haven't done too well this year, not very many and small. We left them for the birds.

  5. that is one busy day, a read with a good book is well deserved. Though when I read the *THUD* I thought, crikey, did something break. Glad it was a nice thud! x

  6. Sue, I loved the Splendid and the Vile. It was uplifting to see what a true leader can do in a time of chaos. Instead of the ..... in the US.

    I hope you like it.
Did you make it to the Boot sale on Sunday?

Thank for your blog. I enjoy reading it daily.

  7. Sounds like you had a very productive day. Cutting down the raspberries before their leaves go is a great idea, it is so hard to figure out what to cut later on.

  8. What a lovely day you had. I've been an avid reader all my life too. A friend introduced me to Enid Blyton when I was 12 so I read all of her books from the library. When they ran out I found Malcolm Saville there and read those too. My mother hated reading so I never got books as presents except for a girl's annual each Christmas. As soon as I started work at 16 I began to buy my own and loved to see them all lined up on a shelf in my bedroom. Since December 2019 when we moved home and I had to get rid of 99% of my collection, I have been slowly buying a new book when I can as the libraries were, of course, closed for months. It was a good excuse! I'm currently waiting for 2 more to arrive in the post 🤗👍

  9. I am reading I am an Island at the moment. It is the most interesting book I have read in a long time Sue - and certainly food for thought in many ways. The stamdard of writing is exceptional - so much so that after each chapter I have to leave it until the next day so that I can really digest what I have just read.

Just gave up trying to read an historical fiction about Alexander Hamilton's wife. COuldn't get into it. Have another from the library whose name escapes me right now.

  14. You've done it again - I shall be hearing a (soft) thud in a day or two because I couldn't resist the 'I am an Island' book! The cover and the title pulled me in and reading a review made my mind up. Oh dear! I'll never have any money - but I do have many, many books.

  17. My name is Regina Gill, I am from USA. It's a pleasure for me to write this testimony about how I got my Genital Herpes cured two weeks ago. I have been reading so many comments of some people who were cured of various diseases by Dr. Williams, but I never believed them. I was hurt and depressed so I was too curious and wanted to try Dr. Williams, then I contacted him through his email when I contact him, he assured me 100% that he will heal me, I pleaded with him to help me out. My treatment was a great success, he healed me just as he promised. he sent me his medication and ask me to go for check up after 3 weeks of taking the medication. I agreed with him i took this medication and went for check up after a month later, to my greatest surprise my result was negative after the treatment, I am really happy that I am cured and healthy again. I have waited for 3weeks to be very sure I was completely healed before writing this testimony. I did another blood test one week ago and it was still negative. so I guess its time I recommend anyone going through Herpes HSV-1 or HSV-2, HIV, HPV, Hepatitis B, Diabetes to reach him through
