The October Library Book Photo

These are the books I'd reserved but not very many to pick up this month, I've got loads on order but there are long waiting lists for some, others are still on order from the booksellers and one or two are sitting on the reserve shelves in various libraries around Suffolk but saying "Hold Expired" which means they ought to be put back into circulation. It may be they are in libraries that haven't re-opened? I might try ringing them to find out.

From the top.............. "The Easter Sepulcher" by Mel Starr is historical crime and the 13th Chronicle of Hugh De Singleton.
"My American" is there because there are  several Stella Gibbons being reprinted by Dean Street Press/Furrowed Middlebrow in January. This isn't one of them but has been mentioned as a good read and as it's set in WWII I thought I'd have a look.
"Fifty Miles With My Dad" has a sub title "along the Suffolk coast" which is why I've borrowed it.
Ann Granger has written many, many crime fiction books and I've read most, "A Matter of Murder" is the most recent.
Somebody must have mentioned "The Tenderness of Wolves" by Stef Penney as she's not an author I know.
I loved "The Salt Path" by Raynor Winn so really looking forward to reading her follow up"The Wild Silence".
On the right is "Under a Wartime Sky" by Liz Trenow. This looks like the sort of book that I don't normally read but must have decided to make a exception as this is set in WWII at Bawdsey in Suffolk where Radar was developed in secret.

Not sure these will last me all month - depends on how I get on with the unknown.

And what about the books I brought home last month?

5 were read and enjoyed and added to the Books Read 2020 page

The rest went back to the library unread.

Now books on order have been collected there is availability to order some more ( There is a maximum of 25 allowed on order per person at any one time) .So I had a look on the library website at the book by Richard Osman which is getting a lot of publicity "The Thursday Murder Club".  How many people in Suffolk do you think are waiting to borrow a copy? 100? 200?.......... No,  more than that ............many, many more .............525..............525!!!
A good thing there are 130 copies either already in stock or on order. I didn't bother to add myself to the list for the time being!

Back Tomorrow for the Saturday round up

  1. And I thought being number 40 plus number 55 was bad enough!
I like the sound of ‘Under a wartime sky’ ....historical within memory...and my library has copies...as well as other books by the same author. Another one to go on my list for next year. Thanks.

  2. Re Hold Expired, check your account to see when how long the hold is valid. The revised website sets a default of three months, you can extend this time. I am finding it is taking much longer for books to arrive so set the maximum period of time.

The Osman book is a good quick read.

    1. I think you've got the wrong end of the stick (as we say in Suffolk).
One is a book I have on order since August and I'm next in the queue but the book is stuck on the Reserve shelf in Kessingland library waiting for someone to pick it up and it has been there for several weeks so should go back into circulation and come to me.
Although I do see what you mean about the default of 3 months when ordering a book - it used to be a year from the date ordered.
You must be in Suffolk? was it you who once thought about buying a house in my village?

  3. I read The Tenderness of Wolves many years ago. One night, I couldn't sleep and took that book downstairs with me to the sofa. I didn't move until I'd finished it! ISTR trying another book by the same author and being disappointed.

  4. I'm just about to start The Wild Silence, after re-reading The Salt Path last week. I do hope it's as good as her first.

  6. I think I recommended The Tenderness of Wolves. I am almost done with A Talent for Murder which I think you had in your stack last month. Nice change from other books I've read recently.

    1. Oh, also read another Stef Penney The Invisible Ones but now can't even recall what it was about. I must have liked it because I finished it.

  7. Another recommendation for The Tenderness of Wolves from me. Just picked up a copy in a charity shop to re-read after many years. I also tried another Stef Penney book and didn't enjoy so much. It must be difficult when your first book is so great to come up with something better or equal for the subsequent ones.
Hopefully we haven't built up expectations so much that you will be disappointed.

    1. I know what you mean about second books and sometimes authors get offered a two or three book deal which must pressure them into writing something quickly

  8. I so enjoy seeing your reading for the month. It gives me ideas, though some are very hard to find in Canada.

    God bless.

    1. It must be very annoying when you can't get some of the books that are published here

  9. Interesting selection. I have just picked up The Wild Silence from my Library here at Whangarei, New Zealand.

  10. Do all your books arrive together? I have given up reserving as the books become ready to pick up at different times and if I am doing a trip to the library (Sax or Fram, I live in Suffolk) every week it uses a lot of Petrol, I might investigate the mobile Library now I am WFH

    1. I could easily go to a library building in Debenham or Eye to collect books but it's more fun going once every four weeks to the mobile to get everything thats come in for me altogether. I always have loads on order so there's always something to pick up and you get 8 weeks on the mobile without fines
