Had a very quick trip out recently to look at some Nativity cribs on display in a church.
They didn't have anywhere near as many as I saw at Grundisburgh Church in 2018 but still a treat to see them all.
Sadly Grundisburgh are unable to have their display anymore as most belonged to broadcaster and author Libby Purves - who was looking for a permanent home for them or to the vicar who has moved on.
Back Tomorrow

An eclectic display!

ReplyDeleteI love the corn husk one.
ReplyDeleteMe too, that's why I took a special photo of it
DeleteSuch a varied bunch! Nice to see.
ReplyDeleteA nice morning out to see what was there
DeleteI love the different interpretations from countries around the world. My Willow Tree set is out, after careful consideration of a child safe location (no high mantel piece in this bungalow) I'm horrified to realise that the one with the Magi in your picture now costs in excess of £400! I have a little wooden set for the children to play with, and a matryoshka nesting set.
ReplyDeleteI only have a tiny one, so small it get's 'lost' wherever I put it
DeleteHow absolutely beautiful. They are all a delight to see - thank you. xx
ReplyDeleteI thought it was worth a trip out
DeleteThe display background material with the swirls is terrible choice for seeing the cribs. I like cribs but for some reason these ones don't do it for me. I loved Libby Purves collection, all magnificent, when they were on display at Norwich Cathedral. Your paragraph about Grundisburgh doesn't make sense to me.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how to reword that paragraph for it to be more understandable
DeleteThanks for letting us share the nativity sets. I have a few of my own and they are displayed in a backlit alcove during the festive season. Catriona
ReplyDeleteIt seems many people collect them in a small way. Although Libby Purves once had over 200 I believe
DeleteHow lovely those are. Never heard of a display of Nativities before, only Christmas trees.
ReplyDeleteGrundisburgh had Wreaths last year. I must go and look a the local tree festival and I read somewhere about a church having a display of various crosses next Easter
DeleteInteresting and lovely. I've never got round to buying a nativity scene - next year I might look out for one
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
Seems to be lots around to choose from
DeleteI tend to like the most traditional Nativity cribs. I notice our garden centers and gift shops carry lots of merchandise but no Nativities. I do not own a Nativity crib but I am looking to purchase. Something metal or carved solid wood with all the animals included would be perfect.
ReplyDeleteNativities are very popular in Mexico. Scale doesn’t seem to matter - baby Jesus bigger than the cows? No problem. We saw some wonderful nativity scenes e the times we were in a Mexico City around Christmas time. It is a coincidence as I have just unpacked a terracotta nativity set I bought there. To saw the sheep are “naive” would be kind…they are so badly made they are good. The figures, however, are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI am a little ashamed that I have a beautiful nativity set, hand painted. It is not especially old, but it is beautifully done. I haven't gotten in out in a few years. I was working at a job which got very busy at the holidays, and getting the tree up, the baking done, and the gifts bought and wrapped was the best that I could hope for. But...I'm retired now, aren't I?
ReplyDeleteGoodness...some intricate dusting required on those! x
ReplyDeleteMy oldest son bought me something very similar to your 4th picture and I love it.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
What a lovely tradition and so many are really beautiful and unique.
ReplyDeleteI have some of the Willow Tree set. I purchased the "stable" on clearance many years ago and then started asking for the pieces. With 4 Little grands around I haven't put it out for the last 6 years. Instead we have the toy Fisher Price set that they can play with. Last year Joseph, Baby Jesus, the shepherd and 1 of the kings have gone missing. I suspect in the toy box in the basement. My mom still has the thick cardboard set that she's had her entire adult life. It's older than me (59). It makes me happy to see it each year.
