Halloween Mantel-shelf

5 sparkly bats from the packaging place a couple of weeks ago and a ceramic pumpkin from a charity shop several years ago are the additions to the mantle- piece for Halloween.

If you are somewhere that celebrates it in rather more exuberant style - stay safe. And if you are trying to avoid all the hassles, keep the lights off and pretend there's no one at home!
We were expecting trick or treat-ers in Ipswich last year and never saw a soul, but there are two little girls next door but one to us in the lane so perhaps they might be round (actually T would hate me saying little as she's 11 now!)

    1. Google Halloween, you will see it has deep and ancient roots in various Celtic ceremonies, most notably Samhain, and is not an American import at all.

    2. You're right Debirah - but the commercialised aspect of it is what I for one hate - and that us definitely an American import!

  2. Your mantleshelf looks pretty. We don't get trick or treaters here as we are in the middle of nowhere. Perhaps you might get T and her sister though, as they are nearby.

  3. Haven't done the whole cobweb and decorate everywhere this year as still decorating literally...just a bat and our two carved pumpkins. x

  4. Just a homegrown pumpkin for us. I’m sad that all the decorations and cheap tat in my face every time I shop will just end up in land fill. I love your little Autumn display.

  5. We will be home for two of our neighbours children, who call early, our sitting room is in the back of the house so we are 'out' all evening to callers.

  6. I dislike the principle of Trick or Treat - it is blackmail - give us something or we will do something nasty to you.

I love your display though so warming and colourful. Just the ticket as the days get darker and colder.

  8. Your mantle looks lovely. We don't decorate for Halloween now there's just the two of us but I always buy chocolately treats ready for the trick or treaters, not that we get that many, some years we get none at all, and then I have to eat all the treats myself. Oh, the hardship!

  11. I’m in the USA. I don’t care for it, either. We’re a nation of fat people so let’s feed them candy!
I put a fall decoration on the front door. My pumpkins are for eating not candles. Bah, humbug here, too!

  12. It looks lovely. We didn't do any fall decor this year, but we did buy candy as we now live in a neighborhood with many young children. If we have leftover candy, it will go into jars or stockings for Christmas gifts. Enjoy your day!

  14. When we lived in town, we would close all the curtains and turn out all of the lights and hide from the trick or treaters. Now that we live out in the country, we never see any. When our kids and grands were little, we loved to trick or treat with them, but now that they're getting bigger we stay home.

  15. The pumpkin is lovely. I welcome trick or treaters until 7.30p.m. at which time I bring the pumpkins indoors and eat the leftover treats! X

  16. We get very few little ones trick or treating here, my lights go out and blinds are pulled down by 8:30. However this year it could be earlier.

    Love the ceramic pumpkin.

    God bless.

  17. We came to Canada in 1966 having never celebrated Halloween in England. The first year neighbours told my mum to get bags of candy and give it out to the kids when they came to the door. Little did we know that there would literally be 100's of kids coming to the house. We quickly ran out of candy and my mum was making popcorn in the kitchen like a mad woman trying to keep up!!!lol I was all for the turning out the lights and going in the basement this year as we didn't get any kids last year and only 3 the year before and it's raining tonight!!! DH would have none of it and so we bought the candy today and will be eating it for who knows how long. It seems that all the kids go to the community centres or the shopping malls that put on great events for them and is much safer!!

  18. Nice decor on your shelf. We've not given out candy in years. Outside light off and usually have a light on as we're hear. Won't answer door if there's a knock though. Take care!
