Yesterday and the Sunday Before

Stupid wet weather each morning meant  No car boot sales on Easter Saturday or Sunday. The forecast for today is dire too. We plan to go through the books-under-the-stairs  Again as Ziffit are doing a 15% extra for any they want to buy.

We went down to Felixstowe  yesterday morning to check the beach hut  and to bring home things we didn't want included in the sale.........Yes we decided to sell, it's just too much expense because of the council putting up ground rent each year plus  we are further away and probably won't use it much now we have a quiet garden to sit out in.
We opened up the hut and a piece of paper fell out......it had been wedged in the top of the door. Someone who had just moved to Felixstowe was looking to buy a hut, so we rang the phone number and they came straight down and agreed to buy it! Our son  will be upset that we've sold, because he loved going down there but the money we've sold it for will keep us for a whole year and there is no way to justify £700 annual ground rent (up from £500 when we first had it) and another £100 insurance for just a dozen days of use. And they've also increased the car parking fee from £3.50 a day to £4.10..........rising costs are just never ending.
So we just have to sort out paperwork when the council offices open again after Easter, hand over the keys and get the money! It's sad but it served it's purpose when we were in the small bungalow and for Col recovering first time round.

We did get to the local car boot on the Sunday before last, we were early and there weren't many there but I found this table and two chairs  for £10.

When Col put a bit of fence up last year to protect part of the patio from the prevailing wind, I said we needed a table and chairs and looked all last year for second-hand without finding anything.
So my purse was opened very quickly when the seller said how much she wanted for these. They've had a wash down and just need a bit of a spray on some of the joints with the rust-cover paint and then some sunshine and warmth...........soon.......please.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. It is a shame about the beach hut but I totally agree with you about the rising costs and that it is no longer financially sensible. If you used it every weekend, maybe that would be different, but as you don't, the money is more useful than the huit. Someone else will love it, just like you did, I am sure, and that family must be thrilled to have found one so you've made their bank holiday for them! :-)
Lovely garden furniture too. It's been a 'lucky' weekend for you both!

    1. A lot of people are very upset about the price rises, some have had huts there for many many years

  2. Wow, you are so lucky to sell so quickly. What a bonus! We had a fairly OK day yesterday weather wise but today has dawned grey and wet in Worcestershire. I hope you indulged in a few chocky treats yesterday. I was busy with a family party but today will get my fill of chocolate, reading and tv once the clearing up is done. Maybe even some stitching.

  5. Sometimes things just work out right and it sounds like that is what happened with the beach hut for you. I can understand you wanting to sell it with prices going up so much and how nice it could be a quick sale. Love the table and chairs and what a good deal!

  6. That table and chairs - brilliant! It does look like the weather will be getting warmer at the end of next week, so hopefully it won’t be long till you can take your coffee outside and enjoy it. It’s a shame about the beach hut, but at least the sale won’t drag on, and a decision made is a weight off the mind. Happy Easter Monday!

  8. A nice little (Easter) nest egg. Well done. Priorities change as we trundle through life, I know we are constantly having to re-evaluate. The patio set is great, now we just need the weather to change so that you can start getting some use out of it.

  9. No point in keeping something if you're not getting much use out of it now - and as you say, the money will be much more useful! Our first local boot sale of the year, due to take place today, has also been cancelled...poo! I keep meaning to say (but keep forgetting) how much I like your new header photo - very Springlike. Love the jug.

  12. As previous comments say there is a time for these possessions; in your case when you needed a space to get away and to let Col have a change of scene.
I hope that making the decision has freed you from a burden.
We parted with our camper van last autumn after 40 years of camping. It feels odd and sad not to be planning a camping holiday this year but it was the right choice. We knew it had to be done. Now it no longer lurks. One of our sons was very sad to see it go but......
Warm sunny weather must be coming soon, after all it's nearly summer!
Enjoy your clear out under the stairs. Sue

  14. I agree with letting the Beach Hut go, you need to be getting value for money and justify it too. My pension is NHS I don't get state pension yet born in 1955, it went up 1% last year but everything is going up so fast. We've reviewed a lot of our bills yet again and you can only cut back so much, we've given our touring caravan to our daughter and her family so they've taken over the storage bill of £400 and insurance. We wasn't using it due to health issues that's lasting longer than we expected. Your patio area will be lovely in the summer xx

    1. I'm also 1955 and waiting extra time for state pension - very annoying. We are living on savings and Col's pension and ESA so the hut was a big expense now

  19. Although its lovely having a little holiday getaway..there comes a point when if its not being used enough to warrant the rent, then its got to go.I had a wooden chalet on a site on the outskirts of Leicester. But got rid of it because the ground rent kept going up.Then we started camping...then we saw a caravan for sale on the campsite,so we bought that!Kept that for about 8 years and then sold it as the kids got older because they didnt want to go to it then...I was sad to see it go,but it was the right thing to do at the time. Now we enjoy our home comforts, sat in our garden with out the need to keep packing the car up every Friday.....Well we will sit in the garden when the sun comes out and the rain stops, lol.I love your garden set,a great bargain!xx

  22. You enjoyed the beach hut a lot when you lived in Ipswich but I can understand wanting to sell now. What luck finding a buyer so fast! I hope that means you will avoid a real estate agent's fee (6% here in the U.S.).

The bistro set is lovely and a real bargain.

    1. Yes we will avoid agents fees, it would have been 2% but saving that meant we were able to let the people have the hut for a bit less so they were pleased

  26. I had to go back and reread the current fees for the beach hut and I didn't quite understand "increased the car parking fee from £3.50 a day to £4.10" - are you saying each time you visited you had to pay this parking charge? If so, beach huts are for only the really well to do. It all sounds very greedy.

I often thought how much I'd like a home in Old Felixstowe with a view of the sea. This was one of those places we loved walking when I was home visiting family.

Do hope you both get to enjoy your lovely little table and chairs very soon.

    1. There are double yellow lines everywhere which means no parking on the roads except for one little bit if we got there early enough. So had to park on the car park and yes it was £3.50 for the whole day last year and has gone up this new season. There is an annual parking permit for beach hut owners but that was over £70!

  27. Afternoon Sue (or is it classed as evening?),

Brilliant news about the beach hut being sold so quickly. Win-win situation. The little bistro set WILL look lovely, when the sunshine arrives. It'll look fab with some flowers in pots, an umbrella for shade (you don't want to get sun-burn). Perhaps you and Colin can have a dummy run, in your thick winter trousers, fleeces, wellingtons and raincoats! :-)

    Have a good evening.

I follow a blog called "Foxes Lane " and they are slowly adding the most amazing all weather space to the back of their house.I am sure Col could make a small version of this idea if he takes it easy and you will have fun sourcing the materials.
Fingers crossed for some nice sunny days for you.

  32. Sorry to hear you sold the beach hut but they are expensive to keep up especially as you didn't use that much plus now that you have a new place and a peaceful country garden to sit in it won't be needed as much. Felixstowe is still only a little way away and a nice place to go and sit and have some fish and chips. They have done the gardens up nice with lots of places to sit.
