Fresh Air and Exercise

After spending Saturday and Sunday venturing no further than the garage and the wood shed, I needed some fresh air so had a walk round the lanes - away from the muddy fields.

The morning was lovely - sunshine and blue sky through this old Oak tree.

The fields have standing water everywhere

The drainage ditches around the fields are all full. Here the water is running out of the ditch on one side of the road, across the road and into a ditch on the other side.

It's unusual to see water draining from the fields this fast. These ditches will be dry for most of the year.

Perhaps this road will be re-surfaced this year. I've biked along it and it's like biking over cobbles.

A grumpy farmer who owns some of the fields around about home has applied for outline planning permission to build a house on this area. It's been a concrete hard standing for sugar-beet and is on a corner of the narrow road.

There is only a farmhouse further down the road on this side of the road although there are properties opposite. The Parish Council have objected  as have quite a lot of us who live close by. It's outside any area designated for building and would set a precedent for farmers to use concrete hard standings - and they are everywhere in this arable area- to build houses. We will see what happens. This is the farmer who reported my neighbours for fly-tipping when they planted some bulbs and primroses on the opposite side of our lane. He said he wanted "His" weeds put back! The council came and looked and dismissed it as ridiculous. There is always a debate about who owns ditches but he certainly doesn't own the land on the lane side of the ditch!

  1. He sounds a right old groucher and I hope his scheme comes to nothing!

The tree photo in particular is stunning!

  2. What a grumpy old sod that farmer is! Why are people like that? Nice to see you had blue skies yesterday :)

  3. Let's hope grumpy farmer DOESN'T get his planning. How ridiculous of him to accuse your neighbours of "fly tipping" when they planted some bulbs and primroses. As far as I am aware, the verge beside the road belongs to the Council!

    1. Not this one as our lane is a private track belonging to no one but used by us all 4 houses

    2. Rats! It's still not "fly tipping" though is it?! Glad the Council told him where to go over it.

  4. Yes we had blue skies yesterday but still very cold (it is February). The fields here. are still very wet. Going to get my tablets to so it will be good to have a walk, there will be a lot by flowers out I expect. The tree is stunning I love to see the bear trees.

  7. I had to chuckle at the picture of the water draining from the field into the ditch. In this very hilly part of the world there are many, many places where roads can be flooded for weeks from this type of drainage, where the fields on one side of the road are at least 10ft higher than on the other side, and water gradually works its way down to a river. Such places are death traps here for weeks after such heavy rain.

  8. I've never given a thought to who owns a ditch. What a miserable so-and-so that farmer must be. It seems your neighbours were improving the local environment! Thank goodness the council agreed.

  9. No doubt this man has put many backs up over the years and will whine like mad when all those whose feathers he has ruffled put objections in against his scheme. What goes around comes around!

  10. You have had lots of rain over there. I imagine the fields are really muddy. Please explain "concrete hard standing for sugar beets".

    1. A flat concrete place where sugar-beet from the fields are tipped ready to be collected and taken to the factory for turning into sugar

  11. You definitely do not want to have a precedent set for hard-standings to be used for building on, imagine all the houses springing up on various places around farms etc. Anyway he sounds like a real grumpy git!!

  12. Sounds like a trouble maker.

Does anyone know, why he is so grumpy?

  14. Who would have neighbours! There is always one who is grouchy or mean or inconsiderate or just plain rude, and most of the time they are completely unaware of the effect they have on other people. Aren't you glad we are all so different? :))

  15. A couple weeks ago there was quite the flooding further from us due to melting snow and great amount of rain that made rivers flood and houses too. So sad. Closed 1-84 as well for awhile. We've had sun lately and clouds. Chilly nights. Nice tree and love your blue skies!🌷
