It's Definitely Winter Now

Firstly apologies for not replying to comments over the weekend although I did read them all and I've hardly commented elsewhere either and I haven't even got a good excuse.

Ski Sunday on TV shouts WINTER to me, it started in 1978 apparently ( I looked it up) so that's quite a while. I've never been skiing and  no intention of doing so and anyway the hills and snow in Suffolk aren't really suitable! But I do love watching the downhill races- just for the scenery. I'd quite like the programme to have less of the presenters and more of the scenery. It started yesterday for a 6 week series.

I should get more reading done this week as Snooker is back on TV and I can read and half watch that at the same time, whereas for the last couple of weeks I've been watching The Bridge which of course is subtitled so needs watching properly.
I've got to the end of season 2 of The Bridge and I think that's enough, shan't do any more.
Monday night is still my favourite night of TV because of the quizzes and now  a new 6 part BBC crime thing called Traces, part 3 tonight.
There's a few other crime dramas coming up this year too, they must have filmed them all in 2019. Line of Duty is back for a new series. Something called Grace -  based on books by Peter James(? I'll look him up) and a return for three more stories of  McDonald and Dodds set in Bath. ...... two completely different detectives forced to work together.

I've really appreciated my TV for keeping me company in the lockdowns.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. We'd be lost without tv at the moment too - it provides a wonderful distraction in these worrying times. We like costume drama, documentaries, nature and wildlife, history, archaeology and just plain daftness. Oh, and the racing too of course. Not that I saw much of that on Saturday afternoon (only the Welsh National) as I was head-first in the chest freezer, emptying it and leaving it to defrost (which didn't really happen as it has been so perishing cold!)

Enjoy your Snooker and the Skiing - just reading the words Ski Sunday brought the music straight into my head.

    1. I'm eating my way through the chest freezer as it's staying here, just my small one going so everything left need to fit into 3 cold bags/boxes and there's way too much at the moment.

  2. I discovered Peter James a couple of years ago, and binged on the local library collection. Detective Grace works in and around Brighton, a place I know and love. Trivial fact:Peter's late mother Cornelia used to make the Queen's gloves. You're right about subtitled programmes - I've started knitting a jumper for my grandson and I managed the back OK, but it's hard to follow the plot of something in French when you are also reading instructions about sleeve increases!

    1. I've looked up Peter James - they sound a bit violent! Strangly I don't mind watching violent police things on TV but don't like reading them - ought to be the other way round?

  3. At immense cost to the electric bill, my telly is on from lunchtime until I go to bed, not to watch but for company. Most of the time it's just on. It's a wicked thing to do, but these are evil days in which we live. I'm sure ski Sunday, or maybe a forerunner, was broadcast long before 1978 because my best friend and I watched it when we were in school. We left school in 1976. By 1978 I was married and living in Florida, which is how I can be so certain of this.

    1. My TV is on far too long too - the house is just so horribly quiet without TV or radio.
Probably Ski Sunday was on TV much earlier -1978 was just the date I found when I googled

    2. I Googled it too, and it does say 1978, so we must have been watching a forerunner. I think we were both a little bit in love with the glamour of it, and Franz Klammer!

  4. I love McDonald and Dodds.
I really miss being able to watch tv.

  5. I would be lost too - I watch lots of telly one way and another. If I did Lent, giving up telly would be a real sacrifice.
I remember Ski Sunday - I didn't know it was still on, to be honest.

    1. TV and lap top would be very hard for me to give up - think I would be very lonely.

  6. I don't really watch much TV. There's not a lot I can watch these days as I get disgusted with all the 'celebrity' programmes there are and I'm not a sports fan. I do watch some quiz programmes when the contestants are ordinary people and detective programmes like McDonald and Hobbs and Ben Fogle.

  7. I've just watched the whole of the first series of The Circle USA over the weekend. I really liked the Channel 4 version and got hooked when it was on. Channel 4 sold it to the USA, although I haven't watched this sort of tele since the first two seasons of Big Brother ... before it got stupid and 'celebrity driven'. Once I had gotten over the American shrieks and pitches I really got into their Circle too.

I have also discovered the delightful murderous fluff that is Father Brown ... four murders in 45 minutes, it beats Midsomer Murders hands down, and of course at the moment I am loving all the period details.

    1. I've seen all Midsummer Murders and Father Brown about 3 times each - that's plenty enough I reckon!

  8. I have been watching Ben Fogle and Escape to the Winter Farm (maybe there is a clue here that I am yearning for this kind of self sufficient life) I thought we would be in Scotland at our cottage now living a more self sufficient life but it seems I will have to be content watching someone elses. All the murder mysteries are repeats now going round and round - I am almost word perfect for some of them!!

  10. Sue, if you're still looking for a removals firm. There's one in Bury called We Help You Move It. We used them a couple of years ago and they were very good.

    1. Thank you. I thought I'd stick with the people who've moved me before... twice. They were really kind especially the first time when I was on my own and Colin was stuck in hospital. Their price was much the same as a phone quote I got so probably all prices have shot up due to Covid and the Stamp duty holiday

  12. I got so excited when I heard the Ski Sunday music yesterday. Like you, I can't ski, don't want to learn, but do enjoy watching it.

  13. We just started :All Creatures Great and Small" last night and it was lovely - but have to admit - I miss the "old" Siegfried - I think it will take me a bit to get used to Samuel West.
I've been watching "Queen's Gambit" on Netflix and really enjoying it - next up is "Bridgerton"!
I've got BritBox on my list to subscribe to - just have to get my Cable bill sorted and reduced first (just not worth what I'm paying at the moment).

  14. I enjoy watching winter sports and love the Winter Olympics. Television does help to pass the evenings especially these days. Since the pandemic has been going we have many more night time games shows here than we did before and that is fine with me. I guess they are cheaper and easier to produce with all the covid restrictions. Enjoy your shows Sue!

  15. I have watched Traces on my Android box, you will enjoy it. I also get BritBox here in Canada and will see if I can find MacDonald and Dodds.

    God bless.

  16. For me Ski Sunday brings memories of David Vine...a Devon boy who worked for a time at the North Devon Journal. He had such a lovely voice. x
