Saturday Round-up

Not much to round up this week. I delivered the things that had been here in a cupboard for 3 years back to their owner, chatted to the window cleaner for a few minutes on the doorstep, Brother in Law rang one evening and that was about it for social interaction!

After snow and gloom last Saturday there was blue sky and sunshine last Sunday, which was good as I'd been waiting for a fine day to defrost my small freezer, which lives in the back porch. I'm leaving the big chest freezer in the garage as it's very old and has been moved  twice already, which really doesn't do them much good and it will take up too much room in the small garage at the bungalow. I won't need so much freezer space in future as there won't be fruit to freeze and I'll be closer to a village shop.
Defrosting the little freezer means hauling it out of the back door so the ice melt doesn't make a big puddle - hence needing a fine day. Another job done.
After a couple of dry days it was back to rain and windy weather again before a fine Friday.Thankfully  we didn't get the storms and rain in Suffolk that have caused so much flooding in the North and around Manchester. Huge problems for everyone advised to evacuate .........where do you go in a pandemic?

On Wednesday I wrote about enjoying reading British Library Crime Classics and most have been good. Some are not so good. The one I've just finished was rubbish! It was "The Woman in the Wardrobe" by Peter Shaffer and first published in 1951. An amateur detective helps the police find a killer in a seaside hotel. I skimmed over the last pages just to get to the end. This is the first by this author that they've reprinted, if they do more I won't bother to borrow.

Box packing is going along steadily, one or two each day and some bits are heading to the bin instead of into a box. I'm sorting the craft room/office now and have decided to leave my small desk for the children who are moving in - if they want it, as I'd rather have my bigger table that's currently in the living room here to use there. The bungalow isn't huge but the main bedroom is big enough to have my craft and office space at one end.
16 boxes in the dining room so far and more upstairs in the bedrooms and craft room and a couple more in the living room. Beginning to wonder if it will all fit in the bungalow!!

I'm not holding my breath while waiting for over 65's turn to be vaccinated here in Suffolk. They've only done 36% of over 80's so far compared to 80+% in other parts of the country. No one has come up with a definitive explanation on why we are lagging so far behind. I suppose they'll catch up eventually.

This week I'm Grateful for
  • A couple of fine days with real sunshine.
  • Archaeologist Son has finished isolating so I can visit my 'bubble' this weekend. His work colleague who tested positive wasn't really ill, and none of the others on the dig had any symptoms - thankfully.
  • Finding some more TV Crime series to watch ( The Bay Series 1 and another Icelandic series Rebecka Martinsson........extreme snow!)

My adventurous weekend will include a trip to the Post Office and a visit to the two youngest grandchildren and their Mum and Dad of course, I'm managing to pass 4 items from the cupboards/garage on to them too................whether they want them or not!

Have a good weekend, I'll be back Monday
Sue

  1. I feel like we're living parallel lives... Our back bedroom is filling up with boxes too, and more stuff is being given away. And he keeps telling me it won't all fit in the bungalow. Dorset weather seems mild compared to rest of the country. Daughter in Norfolk has lot fence panels. Daughter in Manchester says they are OK, but less than a mile away police evacuated homes at risk of flooding. No idea about my vaccination. I suspect they may want to give me part one the week before I move to East Anglia then I may get lost in the system. Keep on boxing

    1. I'm glad there is a garage where I'm going - don't think it will have the car in it!
Weather is calm here compared to elsewhere

  2. Packing up your home is always discombobulating. Many of our boxes (though marked for a specific room) seem to have just been bunged anywhere. I must rescue the box of kitchen stuff which I noticed had been dumped in the stables, whilst stuff for the stables was in the Pink Bedroom! They seemed to take great pleasure in overwhelming us and saying cheerfully, "Where do you want THIS?" when my poor brain had given up the will to live an hour earlier.

Now we can at least take our time a bit more but it is like trying to get a GALLON into a pint pot here, especially with the books, as we are two BIG bookcases short (having sold quite a lot of the furniture to the incoming people at our old house).

I hope your bungalow won't prove too small - at least you have moved a couple of times in recent years so should be well-pruned to start with. (Angela - hope it is the same for you when you move). We gave SO much to the Charity shops whilst packing.

Glad you can see family today.

    1. The bungalow is smaller but fine for me as I'm own my own most of the time. I'll just take my time to get organised

    2. We are going through the same process...but unfortunately many charity shops here in Victoria,Aus, are either closed or not accepting donations due to Covid which just complicates things even more!

    3. Yes charity shops here are closed again, luckily I'd got rid of most things to them in the early autumn

  3. We start our married lives with bare necessities and then spend the next umpteen years collecting stuff only to sell it, bin it or give it away to get back to the bare necessities.

We have a lovely sunny day here today, a bit cold I've been told, but at least it's dry. The flooding in the north is horrendous and it's hard to imagine how people are coping with it. Did anyone see the picture Cro put on his blog yesterday?

    1. Just looked at that - absolutely devastating.

    2. It must be devastating to get flooded once and even more worrying to know it could happen again and again. Even in Suffolk there are roads flooding where they never have before

  5. There is nothing like a move to sort and thin out stuff, we moved 11 years ago to our home, and the last 2 boxes I had I did not even open, sent the straight to the charity shop, I decided I had not used anything for a couple of months and did not need it. I do love have less stuff, life is much better. We even gave our daughters the boxes of stuff from the attic.

    1. I'm very glad I've been clearing out and tidying steadily for the last couple of years. Thats made it easier

  6. Yes, I need to have a clear out, but I really hope I'm in my forever home. So many moves, sometimes with only six months in between, over eighteen years and I wondered if moving would be so ingrained into my psyche if I'd ever settle in one place.

    1. I hope where I'm going will suit me well but who knows, it's been thirty years since i lived actually in a village rather than on the edge or in town

  7. I seem to have spent my entire life living on bare essentials without really thinking about it. I moved a lot when I was younger from flat to flat and even settling in a house I never bothered with wanting things. Odd that. I have no idea why except of course that my parents never had anything but then nobody's parents had anything but essentials in the 40s and 50s.

    1. Lots of the things I have are due to having family come and stay and grandchildren to come and play........ Oh I'm a poet and didn't know it.

  8. Even though we've only been in this house for just over 2 years, I feel I need to go through some things like plastic boxes or even the "cleaning stuff" box. Surely, if I haven't used something since we moved here, I really don't need to give it house room? Mind you, my hubby will surely say that, if I throw it out, that's when I'll find I need it. *sigh*

  9. I know what you mean about handing things stored in your place back to adult children whether they want them or not. Found a container of old teenage magazines high up in a cupboard and returned to DD. Turned out to be a humorous exercise. She and her friends (all in late 30s) had a good laugh looking at photos of late 1990s TV and pop stars--who lasted and who faded away. Not to mention the laughs at all the silly quizzes most girl magazines favoured.

    Good luck with packing up.

    1. It was surprising how many things were in the dining room cupboard on the left of the photo and I still seem to have a rather large amount of books.
      Hopefully moving within 4-6 weeks

  12. When my grandma and grandad moved from their large 3 bedroom terraced house into a much smaller one bedroom council flat he told us he had measured all the furniture and it would all fit in. We were surprised but took his word for it. On moving day we soon realised he had indeed measured very carefully and it did all fit in - he had overlooked the fact that he had not left any room between the pieces to walk around!!

    1. Oh dear that is a drastic downsize.
My change down isn't quite so huge. It's mainly the bookshelves that I might have problems with and one recliner chair

  14. I am glad your son and his friends are well~~hallelujah! We had a dry and cool week last week. It was raining this a.m. when we went to church this a.m. and chilly when we left. Phil is leaving now to pick up our lunch order at Dennys. I have a lot of things to go through. For sure a tote will be taken care of on Monday so I can take it to a thrift store I support here in town. I have saved boxes to put items in which recyles them, in a different way. Take care and have a good week!
