The First Of May

Thank you to everyone for comments yesterday and good wishes for the move next week. Apologies to Sue for getting the word IF stuck in her head like an ear-worm! The removal van is booked for next Friday so by this time next week I will be living among boxes again but unpacking them rather than packing! I've promised the 3 year old granddaughter that she can help unpack the toy boxes - so that will be fun๐Ÿ˜Š and I've asked for a bit of family help with everything rather than trying to do it all myself.

*******************

I've missed doing my First Of The Month posts with all the weather lore and days to remember so it will be good to get back to my books - wonder how long it will take to unpack them? The shelving will need tethering to the walls first as they are tall bookshelves.

What with one thing and another I'd forgotten this is a Bank Holiday weekend - for me this means two Boot Sales!......... - weather permitting......and it looks as if it might permit because rain is forecast but only for later in the afternoons here in the East.
If it does rain I have a plan.....................Over the first Lock-down Suffolk Libraries re-vamped their website and now there is an easier and clearer to find "recommended for you"" page. It says it's related to what you've borrowed before and on the Non Fiction pages for me I can look through 20,526 thumbnail pictures of book covers! and with one click find out more about them. What a good way to spend a wet afternoon! Browsing books without having to wear a mask and all in one room rather than in 40 different libraries.

Other things to look forward to are picking up some reserved books from Debenham library, Sunday lunch at Son and DiL's. Then on TV there is the much talked about finalรฉ of Line of Duty and the final days of the snooker championship that I've been following for the last fortnight.

I'm also going to research Electric suppliers for the bungalow. At the moment it is Scottish Power, previously I was with Eon.........both are equally as bad as the other in customer service (trying to get hold of them on the phone is a joke) and as I've the opportunity to start from scratch I'm thinking about the Greener companies - any ideas?

And if I'm still looking for things to do I could always start writing "change of address" notes to friends and family.

This week I'm Grateful for

  • An end to the long drawn out house move in sight
  • Plans to make sure  another Bank Holiday alone in a Covid Pandemic is a busy one.

Back Sometime
Sue

  1. I'm with EDF because they were here when I moved in and I stayed with them. After a few teething problems during the change of ownership all has been fine. I think they are all difficult to get through to on the phone. They don't pester me with smart meter stuff and I can still have paper bills which I like and I phone through a meter reading which they remind me about by letter. I bet it is nice to see the end in sight and you can move in. No rain yet. Looks like we've completely missed it.

  2. Having been with British Gas I defected to Octopus - good customer service, good on the environmental factor and very good on price !

  3. Good morning Sue, Happy May Day, I have changed to Bulb and find them easier to deal with and the website is clear and cheaper. When I was stopped by people trying to get you to change when I told them Bulb they said we can't match that!! xx Val

  4. Happy May Day to you, Sue. I'm so very glad the end is in sight. Are you going to be in reasonable distance of Southwold?
Browsing a virtual library sounds great fun.

  5. I love the idea of browsing a virtual library too.

Well, I bet you thought the words removal van were never going to surface again! Brilliant news and I bet you are counting down the hours.

We are with Octopus, and give them a monthly reading (email prompted). Our other daughter's with them too and recommended them to us.

  6. Happy May Day! I'm glad the end is in sight for you at last, also that you'll have help unpacking. The sooner you're unpacked the sooner you can get settled.

  8. Very best wishes for The Move let's hope it's a fine dry day! There was an article in the Telegraph today I read through about getting rid of 'stuff' that moves with you and never sees the light of day. It rather appealed to me as I have a loft with many boxes.....

  12. Good news about the move date at last. Almost there.
I am finding it interesting to hear about all the different energy companies available in the UK. We only have one!

    1. They go down like skittles Jaycee. As one goes bust another one comes along until it goes bust. Their shelf life is short.

  13. Another vote for Bulb, the website is so easy to work around and you can pretty much decide how much you want your monthly payments to be (within reason). If you decide to go with them, remember to ask around your loved ones to see if they are on Bulb so that they can refer you and you both get £50 or failing that I see that Topcashback are offering £42 to switch

  14. Eon have taken over from Npower and changed bills from quarterly to monthly which I find easier to handle.

  15. I look forward to some sales soon -- here they are called garage sales/yard sales/tag sales. We haven't done any for so long because of Covid. I'm so glad you are close to being done with the move!

  16. I’m with Octopus for gas and electricity, they are so easy to deal with by phone or email, I wouldn’t change to anyone else as I’m so satisfied with them. I can highly recommend them.

  20. Good hunting at the boot sales. Hoping you have good weather and plenty of help for your move.

  21. Another vote for Octopus. Easy to deal with. Fair pricing, no silly prices followed by massive increases. They were very helpful sorting out our noisy gas meter getting it replaced as soon as the restrictions permitted.
I'll still shop around next year but can't imagine returning to one of the big six.
Great news that the end of the move saga is in sight.

  22. Recommend you looking at Octopus, which I use. Various options to choose from, green to greenest.. that will make sense when you look!! Excellent customer service.. reminder each month to send in meter reading.. good value in my opinion. Good luck with the move!

  23. It's good that you have competition for power companies as that can help keep prices down. We have no choice here as we have to use what is available where we live. I'm glad you asked your family to help with the unpacking. That is a lot for one person and I'm sure they are happy to help. It will be fun for your granddaughter to unpack the toys!

  24. I hope the weather holds and you get to go to some boot sales! Should be fun.

  25. I’m with Pure planet, not sure if they cover all of the UK,but very pleased with their communication so far.Wishing you all the best with the move and fingers crossed for a dry day ๐Ÿ˜„

  26. Two car boots, I hope the weather allows you to get to them both ... I'm really jealous now though!!

Here at the flat I'm with SSE for both gas and electric, and their website is simple and easy to use, you do your own readings and submit them online. I have a Direct Debit set up but when I get the bills I simply go online and pay any overage immediately so I know I am always in a little bit of credit.

  27. Good luck with the move ! For energy you might want to look at People's Energy, they are recommended by Moneysaving expert, committed to green fuels and to ending fuel poverty for all. They are competitively priced and I have had good customer service since switching. They are not a conventional energy company but a social collective based in Scotland, so worth a look if you are interested in that sort of thing.

  30. Hooray that the move is finally happening. Here bookcases get tethered to walls because of earthquakes - all part of living in the "shaky isles". And good on you for asking the family to hep out. Take care and stay safe, Michelle in Wellington, NZ

  31. Hi Sue, I often stalk your blog but don't think I have ever commented before. Just thought I would add another vote for Octopus energy. Changed just over a year ago from Ecotricity (another green company) and save myself over £500 a year in the process (what WAS I doing before??). They have been no trouble. I get an e-mail prompt each month for a meter reading and get my 'bill' back within an hour usually. Can't recommend enough at the moment. Kim
