I wasn't going to make a Christmas cake this year but then changed my mind and decided to make the Light Glacé Christmas cake from my Delia Smith's Christmas cook book and not just one for me but for the Christmas Hampers too.
The Grape Tree shop in Diss had almost everything needed for this multi-coloured cake...... green from the angelica, red from the cherries, yellow from the crystallised pineapple, orange from the apricots and mixed peel, and gold from the sultanas, brown pecans. Not forgetting crystallised ginger.
(The Grape Tree usually have multi-coloured cherries but I had to settle for red)
Should look good.
And I do love a bit of Christmas cake with an apple and chunk of cheese for the days after Christmas.
Back Tomorrow
Sue
It sounds lovely and I know it will be much enjoyed. xx
ReplyDeleteDifferent to my usual cake and good to try a different recipe after 40 years!
DeleteNow I want to make one! Have seen so many Christmas cake posts but I keep telling myself I am too greedy and will scoff the lot to myself!! There’s only me that likes it! I must resist!
ReplyDeleteMine will last me several weeks I think
DeleteNot doing puddings this year, but I will make a cake
ReplyDeleteI've not done Christmas puds since Col died - not my favourite pudding at all
DeleteThose fruits look lovely - I made ours with the girls Sunday and this week I may make a pudding. Made one for the first time last year which I cooked in the slow cooker which was so much easier than steaming. Enjoy your baking x
ReplyDeleteNice to try something completely different
DeleteI love Christmas pudding and my D friend always makes her one. The fruits looked lovely.

The recipe says the fruits look like jewels!
DeleteI don't think I've made a proper Christmas cake for 20 years or so- or Christmas pudding as only Mum and I used to eat that. I used to "cheat" and make my neighbour's Cardiganshire Boiled Pineapple Fruit Cake which can be made at the last minute and is a wonderfully rich fruit cake, so moist. Yours sounds lovely and what a joy the shopping for the ingredients must have been. Special ingredients, not your everyday necessities.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I've never used Angelica in anything before - hope it turns out alright
DeleteLooks like you are going to be busy :)
ReplyDeleteBetter get started!
Deletei havent seen angelica in the shops for years , i used to grow it for my stepmum 30 odd years ago . one to add to the seed list methinks
ReplyDeleteIt's one of those herbs that I used to grow when I grew everything but I've never crystallised it.
DeleteI'm not too fond of fruit cake but I could definitely nibble on all your ingredients. Well, apart from the angelica. I'm not sure what that tastes like! Enjoy the baking!
ReplyDeleteI may have eaten a few of the apricots !
DeleteI'd have eaten the dried fruit before I got as far as making a cake. I'm not allowed in kitchen when such activities are taking place. Mum used to throw me out too.
ReplyDeleteThe apricots are delicious but I wouldn't want to eat the crystallised peel on its own!
DeleteI'm not too keen on fruit cake, but with apple and cheese it's lovely. Enjoy your baking with jewels.
ReplyDeleteI'm a once a year fruit cake eater
DeleteI always think if the ingredients look delicious before they're baked then it will definitely be a delicious cake!!
ReplyDeleteVery true and It smelled rather good when I got it out of the oven
DeleteI bought glace cherries from Sainsbury's for the Florentines and then discovered my local wholefood shop had natural ones - a lovely deep velvety red which I would have preferred. Your cake will be a 'jewel' cake with all those colours.
ReplyDeleteThe mix looked delicious - completely different to my usual Christmas cake
DeleteMy grandmother use to make fruit cake and I loved it but no one seems to make a good one here so I usually pass on it.
ReplyDeleteCathy
I only make one once a year now - used to do one nearly every week when Colin had a packed lunch every day.
DeleteYou can see why home made bought Christmas cakes are so expensive. Love a quality cake.
ReplyDeleteYes it's not a cheap alternative but the ingredients will make 3 small cakes so a nice addition to the Hamper gifts
DeleteYour Christmas cake in jeweled colors will be beautiful and delicious. They are a lovely addition to the hampers as well.
ReplyDeleteThe mixed ingredients looked really good
DeleteI used to make this Sue - always turns out beautifully.
ReplyDeleteOh that's good to know
DeleteHow wonderful! I hope you share your finished result. I don't make a fruit cake (as I'm the only one that likes it) but I do try to find an imported English one as American ones are a bit different (lots more of the candied fruit and less proper fruit lol)
ReplyDeleteYour cake is going to be so colourful. The perfect way to celebrate the holidays.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Can't wait to have the kitchen sorted enough for such frivilous baking! x
